PLEASE HELP I'm in so much pain - severe sore throat

carinaa99 · 09/10/2020 21:24

I have never had a sore throat like this
I am in so much pain and building up so much saliva as swallowing is so painful.
I have Jakeman's sweets, paracetamol, honey and lemon - nothing is cutting it.
I am thinking as this sore throat is so severe, could it be COVID?
I just need help with the pain management so any tips would be much appreciated x

TCP - don't drink it. Gargle with it. Not neat either. Diluted obviously. It stinks to high heaven and tastes rank too, but it's much better than salt water and works quicker too 👍

When I had my tonsils out as an adult I found drinking or gargling with full fat coke worked better than anything else. I still drink it when I have a sore throat now, the only time I do!

I suffer with bad tonsillitis on a yearly basis and the only thing that ever soothes is it alternating hot ribena with ice lollies. You automatically go to ice cold, but the hot ribena really really helps and is far more soothing. It is a magic combo.

Do your tonsils look normal? In other words not redder or with white bits on them?

Could be Covid.

EggysMom · 09/10/2020 22:02

Ice lollies. Lots and lots of them.

DragonPie · 09/10/2020 22:02

Take ibuprofen as well but stagger it with the paracetamol so you’re having something regularly. Do not take codeine with paracetamol if it also contains paracetamol as you’ll be overdosing. Ice lollies.

Tonsillitis is awful, I remember it well.

@OneIsAWorldOfBooks

Pineapple juice contains an enzyme (can't remember the name but it begins with a b)

it's really good for sore throats, I swear by it. The vitamin c is good if you are run down too.

Stings like hell though like you say!!

Crockof · 09/10/2020 22:07

Whisky. Gargle and swallow.

GalOopNorth · 09/10/2020 22:09

Bromain

GalOopNorth · 09/10/2020 22:10

Oops bromelain is the enzyme

QuestionableMouse · 09/10/2020 22:12

Honestly don't fuck about. Ring 111 and see if you can get an ooh GP appointment. It could be a few things and some need treating with antibiotics.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 09/10/2020 22:13

I’ve got tonsillitis atm. Tyrozets are my go-to but the pharmacist told me today they’ve been discontinued ☹️. Take ibuprofen for the inflammation and spray with Difflam or similar.
It’s not Covid.

GetRid · 09/10/2020 22:14

I had a throat like this when I had a particularly bad bout of tonsillitis a couple of years ago. Turned into scarlet fever. Needed antibiotics

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMee · 09/10/2020 22:15

Have had this 2 weeks ago. Never had such a sore throat before! Only STREFFEN LOZENGES helped. Then had shivers, temperature and cough and was really ill for 2 days, couldn't even stand unaided, and really thought it was c-19. Had a test done and it came negative. Hope, it is not c-19 for you too.

cactusdog · 09/10/2020 22:21

Sounds like tonsillitis to me! I'm a chronic sufferer of tonsillitis and it is honestly hell.
I've had it like you when it's so bad you can't swallow. Feels like actual shards of glass in your throat when you do.

Keep an eye on your tonsils and if there's any white go to the doctors for antibiotics.

The only things that have helped me are gargling every hour or so with warm salt water and double dose of painkillers (ie ibuprofen and paracetamol). Also eating some ice sometimes works.

I've heard gargling with dilutes TCP works wonders as pp said so i plan to try that next time.

Really feel for you OP, for me it was worse than contractions pain.

Blossomhill123 · 09/10/2020 22:29

Gargle salt water every couple of hours .
Ibroprufen and paracetamol every 4 hours .
Hope you fill better fast .

whattodo2019 · 09/10/2020 22:37

gargle with milton diluted 1 part milton to 40 parts water. it will go away and it's totally safe

PutTheBathOnPlease · 09/10/2020 22:37

How old are you, it could be mononucleosis (glandular fever) but this is more common in those under 25. Gives you a truly horrendous sore throat plus super fatigue.

carinaa99 · 09/10/2020 22:39

Going to book a doctor's appointment tomorrow. My tonsils look normal (not inflamed or red)

domesticslattern · 09/10/2020 22:44

When I had something similar I stopped trying to swallow my own saliva and instead spat it into a bowl.
So that was an attractive Christmas Grin
I hope you feel better soon. You can get numbing sprays when the pharmacist opens too.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/10/2020 22:45

If it’s tonsillitis - sounds like it - you do need antibiotics.

I was once so ill with tonsillitis that I began to understand how some people in Victorian times were said to die of a ‘putrid sore throat’.

It took 2 weeks of ABs to knock it on the head.

Bagelsandbrie · 09/10/2020 22:46

If it’s this bad I’d be inclined to ring 111. If they think you need antibiotics they can fax a prescription through to your local pharmacy for you to collect tomorrow.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 09/10/2020 22:47

Paracetamol, ibuprofen, difflam spray, gargle oraldene....failing having any of those in the house do you have Tpc (gargle it) or any strepsils to get you through the night?...if it’s that bad get yourself an out of hours app/whatever you can tomorrow and short term get a friend(/partner/oh/whoever) to look with a torch and check it’s not quinsy.

SeaToSki · 09/10/2020 22:52

Do you have a temp?

Does your tongue look like it has little raised dots on it or darker dots? A bit like a strawberry?

Do you have a stomach ache of any description?

Do your ears hurt?

Can you swallow properly?

Are your armpits uncomfortable, or your hips on the inside corner where your legs join your undercarriage?

Cavagirl · 09/10/2020 22:52

Oh OP. I've been there.
I remember lying in bed awake at 3am with tears in my eyes from the pain promising myself once it was better I would never ever forget to appreciate the ability to swallow pain free ever again.
It was strep throat and antibiotics with a shedload of cocodamol sorted me out within a few days. GP for you!!!! Emergency appt tomorrow!! FlowersFlowersFlowers
