Posh girl names that haven’t filtered through

Just wondering why some names stay within a milieu and others spread.
These are the sorts of names I’m thinking of:
Marina
Cosima
Petra
Cressida
Why do certain names stay within posh circles?

Think more:
Harriet
Orla
Phoebe
Ava
Olivia
Anoushka
Pandora
Hermione
Katherine
Elizabeth
Charlotte
Victoria

mathanxiety · 10/10/2020 20:55

LOL @ Orla. Every fourth girl I knew in Ireland growing up was Orla.

Silene · 10/10/2020 21:17

Xanthe...only known one, but I love the name.

RonaLisa · 10/10/2020 21:29

@Benjispruce2

Ottilie
Very common, especially when mis-pronounced Otterly.

@Jammymare Loveday is surely a boy's name?

Agree with PP who mention nicknames. I mentioned real names earlier. But the girls when I was at school were known as Motters, Jacko, Tommo, Boo, Poggy, Titch, Blib-Blob etc...

RonaLisa · 10/10/2020 21:30

Our cats were Tabitha, Wilhelmina and Octavia, btw. Dogs were all boys.

ddl1 · 10/10/2020 22:01

'I know a Fenella, a Cressida and an Octavia - all quite posh.

My sister knows a very posh Fanny'

I knew a Fenella as a kid. I think she was middle class but not really posh.

I'm amazed that anyone under 60, posh or not, would be called Fanny, given the associations that the word has developed!

Probably the poshest English women whom I've met personally were called Juliet and Atlanta (not related to one another).

Jammymare · 10/10/2020 22:12

@RonaLisa there’s a girl called Loveday who competes in school teams for one of our local boarding schools

Hairiseverything · 10/10/2020 22:35

@ddl1 She’s not under 60 - I think you may be right!

Janevaljane · 10/10/2020 22:48

Loveday is a traditional Cornish name

RonaLisa · 10/10/2020 22:50

@Jammymare I think it can be either. I've just only ever known it used for a boy. I wanted to use it for DC1, but XH refused (the bugger).

CarnageAtTheGardenCentre · 10/10/2020 23:38

Judashascomeintosomemoney
Julie short for Julia possibly. But nobody properly posh is called Julie
No sorry, definitely Julie. Proper old money landowning posh

Really ??? Wowsers, I must tell dh 😁
My nana was called Julia..btw.

MrsGulDukat · 10/10/2020 23:46

I know a Lavinia who is a teen and a Freya.

My dd is called Phoebe. Never considered whether it was posh or not. (we arent)

DreamTheMoors · 11/10/2020 05:29

Cosima will forever remind me of Claus von Bulow and his wife Sunny whom he was accused of murdering at her mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. They had a daughter, Cosima, who stuck by her father during both murder trials.
Very tragic all the way around.

joystir59 · 11/10/2020 05:34

Cecily
Wilhelmina

NewtoHolland · 11/10/2020 05:54

Allegra

FrenchFancie · 11/10/2020 06:06

I used to know a baronet and his wife was called Julia (posh and very very lovely!)
Other really posh names I know were:
Katy
Another Julia
Hillary
And a Lady Mary (but not of downton Abbey game).
And a Lady Sarah (although it was at uni and I’m not 100% certain she wasn’t lying about the ‘lady’ title as I’m not sure it was used at our degree ceremony. She was posh though, Daddy drove a Jaguar and she had her own horses)

The way to name a baby I was reliably informed, full name bank manager shortened name rock star. If it fits both its perfect.

Camomila · 11/10/2020 09:11

Ddot Both DSs and DH would work! DS2 would be more indie/folk than rockstar (namewise)

REDLIPSTICKANDNAILS · 11/10/2020 09:26

My daughter knows a 7 year old Bunty. I love it.

Ddot · 11/10/2020 10:21

Unfortunately i didn't get a good name, dot is nickname given to me by friends, dippy old tart haha had to add extra d cos someone had it

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 11/10/2020 10:26

“He said, oh my god, you look just like Shakira”
“No, no, you’re Catherine Zita!”
“Actually my name’s Marina”

Sorry, couldn’t resist, love that song Grin

I know a Juliette & a Marina, definitely not posh. Victoria and Catherine I don’t associate as being posh, know quite a few people in my age group with these names, some shorten their names but others don’t. Also knew a Pip, again not posh.
