Posh girl names that haven’t filtered through

Just wondering why some names stay within a milieu and others spread.
These are the sorts of names I’m thinking of:
Marina
Cosima
Petra
Cressida
Why do certain names stay within posh circles?

I just saw Camilla mentioned. I always considered this name very posh, however two different friends have a daughter called Camilla. One is shortened to Milly, the other Mills. Both parents are definitely not posh, although the mums aspire to be posh.

mrshonda · 09/10/2020 21:58

Phaedra - a friend had a girlfriend with that name and she was posh

Jumpingkangeroo · 09/10/2020 21:59

@Tanith

Alexandra Lucia Agnes Viola Henrietta Celia Jonquil
No too aspirational, it’s the plainer names that will be used.

None of the names mentioned are posh.

Thanks to British colonialism there is a wide spectrum of girls and women with those names from former British colonies.

In fact the upper middle-class people I am related to and know have very boring names.

Buttybach · 09/10/2020 22:06

Olympia
Araminta (Genuinely considered this one)

Buttybach · 09/10/2020 22:06

Jocasta

Jammymare · 09/10/2020 22:11

Babette
Delerie
Jabeena

@UntamedWisteria

As PPs have said, us very posh folk tend to choose classic names for our kids.

Although, has anyone mentioned Venetia?

I know people who go by most of the other names on here though.

Posh people are not one unit who all do the same thing. There’s conservative/traditional posh, boho posh, intellectual posh, leftie posh yadda yadda.

Ah the myths about posh people on the internet.

Cam2020 · 09/10/2020 22:19

Bloody hell, why would anyone want to call their daughter Jocasta or Phaedra? Not exactly happy women to aspire to! You never hear of men called Oedopus or Theseus (or I never have, anyway!). Are these people landed gentry 'posh' or upper middle class 'posh'?

Funny how you never hear of any Gonerils! Grin

TatianaBis · 09/10/2020 22:20

I know 3 Jocastas, it’s a good name.

ghislaine · 09/10/2020 22:21

I went to school with a Phaedra. The family were very bohemian and arty.

Lockheart · 09/10/2020 22:26

Just adding to the chorus of people who love Tabitha but wasn't aware some people thought it was posh!

I don't really think there are truly "posh" names - there are aspirational names but I'm not sure they're the same thing.

Think about the royals. You don't get much posher than that. Most of their names are pretty ordinary - Elizabeth, Catherine, Sophie, Sarah, Diana, Anne, Margaret, Mary, Charlotte, Victoria, Alexandra.

Camilla, Beatrice, and Eugenie slightly bucking the trend but they're more what I'd call uncommon rather than posh.

It's not exactly full of Eudoras or Aramintas or Ottolines (although I do like Ottoline).

PaddingtonsHat · 09/10/2020 22:28

Tiggy. Is that a nickname (for what?) or an actual name?

WildishBambino · 09/10/2020 22:29

The only Marina I know is from Stingray. Is being a mute, underwater breathing fish-woman posh or not?

CthulhuInDisguise · 09/10/2020 22:30

My peers at my public school were:

Natalie
Katie
Gemma
Patricia
Siobhan
Hannah
Jocasta
Louise
Kelly

Benjamin
David
Daniel
Rory
Jonathan
Gareth
Mark
Matthew

Not particularly posh, just normal names from my generation.

TatianaBis · 09/10/2020 22:30

I have no idea what an aspirational name is.

I do know that, according to MN, posh people can call their kids what they like without being labelled such.

Lockheart · 09/10/2020 22:31

As an aside, the two actual ladies (with titles) I know in real life are called Sheila and Jane.

Not sure either of those have made an appearance yet?

Benjispruce2 · 09/10/2020 22:46

Ottilie

museumum · 09/10/2020 22:49

All the posh people I know are called Katie, Fi or Lucy. About three or four of each. Gets quite confusing.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 09/10/2020 22:49

Marina is a royal name.

I must be posh as my name has featured in several of the lists in this thread.

RationalOne · 09/10/2020 22:52

I don't consider any of those names 'posh'

Honeybeexo · 09/10/2020 22:52

Julia (my name lol)

BitOfFun · 09/10/2020 22:52

I really like the name Verity, but the ones I've met haven't been even slightly posh.
