Posh girl names that haven’t filtered through

Just wondering why some names stay within a milieu and others spread.
These are the sorts of names I’m thinking of:
Marina
Cosima
Petra
Cressida
Why do certain names stay within posh circles?

OP posts:

Marina is definitely not a posh name

Cheesypea · 09/10/2020 19:11

My parents gave me a fairly bland middle class sounding name.
People assume my background is posher than it was, think my name has something to do with that.

Marmite27 · 09/10/2020 19:13

I know a Merina and a Cosima. They’re not posh!

My niece is named Cressida, but lives in Australia if that makes a difference?

@Cheesypea

^ hopefully the future will be a classless society so it wont matter if your called sharon or felicity.
It shouldn't matter anyway.

My daughter is the seventh generation of her name. The other side of her family are proper posh ( castles, Earis, Eton etc.). Her name is really unusual and certainly hasn't filtered through. She regularly expresses a wish to be called Chloe.

BillywigSting · 09/10/2020 19:18

I know a marina and a tabitha and neither are posh, though tabitha is very elderly.

The poshest people I know are named Helen, Arianna, John and Karl.

John's father owned a castle.

Go with Chardonnay. If you’re that posh, I’m sure she’ll pull it off.

I used to know an Amelia, the only Amelia I've ever known (apart from the one in the John Mouse books). She lived in an expensive town but she didn't appear to be the posh type. She was a terrific pain, mind.

SisterAgatha · 09/10/2020 19:39

I know a very unposh Athena. And Verity.

Dido.
Ermentrude.
Petronella.
Camilla.

Snog · 09/10/2020 19:44

Virginia
Perdita
Octavia
Fenella

everythingisginandroses · 09/10/2020 19:45

I once came across a young man called Artemis. He wasn't posh, or a girl. It was odd.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 09/10/2020 19:45

Not many people can pull this off, you know.

Marina was a dodgy car. Petra was a bitch. Cressida is a dick.

Could be why.

Elderflower14 · 09/10/2020 19:47

Maud reminds me of Jilly Cooper!

Supersimkin2 · 09/10/2020 19:50

Posh names that have failed to move socially inevitably come with grim nicknames.

Penelope is always Penny, which is very un-posh. Cressida - cress, etc.

ShadowKitty · 09/10/2020 19:50

Maud reminds me of Mildred Hubbles best mate which isn't a bad thing Smile

Lucylaine · 09/10/2020 19:50

Most at my (very posh girls only) Prep; then follow on private school were

Lucinda
Elisabeth
Sophie
Charlotte
Hayley
Danielle
Margaret
Rachelle
Mary
Cressida
Francesca
Victoria
Abigail
Daisy
Tabitha

Just normal names,

My child's school is exactly the same, with a few Millie/Mollie/Eva added in.
