Posh girl names that haven’t filtered through

Just wondering why some names stay within a milieu and others spread.
These are the sorts of names I’m thinking of:
Marina
Cosima
Petra
Cressida
Why do certain names stay within posh circles?

Yes, I agree ddl1 it hadn't occurred to me but my roots are in fact Russian/German. However grannie's mn Marina predated that but I believe was because her parents didn't like Maud/Mabel/Mary and wanted an M name.

WildRosie · 10/10/2020 10:06

Gina, Phillippa isn't posh. Pippa, on the other hand, most certainly is. Or Pip for a boy.

misstiggiwinkle · 10/10/2020 11:21

Tiggy is short for Antigone

@Lockheart

Just adding to the chorus of people who love Tabitha but wasn't aware some people thought it was posh!

I don't really think there are truly "posh" names - there are aspirational names but I'm not sure they're the same thing.

Think about the royals. You don't get much posher than that. Most of their names are pretty ordinary - Elizabeth, Catherine, Sophie, Sarah, Diana, Anne, Margaret, Mary, Charlotte, Victoria, Alexandra.

Camilla, Beatrice, and Eugenie slightly bucking the trend but they're more what I'd call uncommon rather than posh.

It's not exactly full of Eudoras or Aramintas or Ottolines (although I do like Ottoline).

Yes but none of those royal names are under 30, most cases a lot older (or very dead Grin) so outdated in terms of what posh people might call a child now - the queen's great grandchildren, outside of the cambridge 3, and "archie" are Susannah, Isla, Lena and Mia, for example, the later three sound neither traditional nor posh to me...
TrickyD · 10/10/2020 12:31

The poshest person I know (aristocracy) named his son Banjo.

Getting into a ski lift, posh mum shouted to her kids 'Banjo, Allegra', don't get into the lift with those boys.'

Said boys being my perfectly respectable and well behaved DSs.

MikeUniformMike · 10/10/2020 12:38

@thevassal

Susannah, Isla, Lena and Mia

they are Savannah, Isla, Lena and Mia

ZolaGrey · 10/10/2020 12:39

@VirginiaWolverine

I know people with most of the names mentioned on here, and I'm not pish. I don't think I've ever met a Fenella, though.
I have. She's a twat.
MikeUniformMike · 10/10/2020 12:41

The royal nanny's real name was Alexandra I think.

Many of the names listed on here are MC names.

thevassal · 10/10/2020 13:48

[quote MikeUniformMike]@thevassal

I knew it was Savannah because I originally wrote 'none of which seem posh/traditional to me' - then looked at Susannah (which I must have mistyped) and thought 'oh Susannah is biblical actually so very traditional' so changed it to 'none of the later three.' Doh! But sort of proves my point even more - if even the queen's granddaughter/grandson are now choosing more normal names, are there many names left that aren't 'filtering' through classes in both directions?

But then I am welsh so what would I know about poshness!

EducatingArti · 10/10/2020 13:53

@SchadenfreudePersonified

Marina

Have you never watched "Last of the Sunner Wine"?

And Petra probably isn't very popular because nobody wants to call their baby after John Noakes' dog.

It was Peter Purves dog. Shep was John Noakes'
Imissmoominmama · 10/10/2020 13:53

@WildRosie- but Pippa is short for Philippa!

WildRosie · 10/10/2020 16:32

I know moomin, that's my point. Small distinctions make much difference.

Ifeelsuchafool · 10/10/2020 17:39

One of our area managers (now left) was called Petra. She was certainly not out of the top drawer! In fact, she was what my mother's old daily might have referred to as, "common as muck" 😂

Weepah · 10/10/2020 17:51

My dc go to a school here in the States with a bunch of old money posh families. None of the girls have names any different than the MC students. But I did meet 3 posh grandmothers at a school event named Mopsy, Ticky and Malabar! And one posh granddad named Cato

Pedallleur · 10/10/2020 17:54

Allegra, Callista, Celeste, Calliope. Generally classical names. Same for boys. Hugo, Julius or Julian. Not manycalled Brutus tho

Ifeelsuchafool · 10/10/2020 18:01

Also some names seem to travel the opposite way. I was born in 1960 and was at school with a Serena (girls' grammer) who was the "wrong side of the blanket" (as it was termed then) offspring of a working class teenager. She lived with her mum and maternal grandmother in less than salubrious surroundings. DD1 was at a private, all girls, prep school with a Serena who was an Hon. (born 1991)
The poshest friend I have is called Flavia. Not titled but family estate, very "old" money.

Gmom · 10/10/2020 18:21

A Marina is a place to park a boat.

UntamedWisteria · 10/10/2020 18:28

Lavinia
Flora

workhomesleeprepeat · 10/10/2020 18:30

I went to uni with a very posh Cosima who used to ask me v racist questions, maybe other Cosima’s are horrible too Grin and this, us normies are not tempted to use the name Halo

Hairiseverything · 10/10/2020 18:31

I know a Fenella, a Cressida and an Octavia - all quite posh.

My sister knows a very posh Fanny

UntamedWisteria · 10/10/2020 18:31

Corinna
Aurea

poppy990 · 10/10/2020 18:40

Victoria is really common amongst my age group (early 40s) but most abbreviate it

GertieBassett · 10/10/2020 19:02

I've known a girl called Lettice..
Family lived in Dulwich Village
Very posh..

190190tnt · 10/10/2020 19:06

I worked with a Petra and a Marina and neither of them were posh !!!

JanewaysBun · 10/10/2020 19:13

I don't think those names are posh just underused. dd's name is coming up a lot!
Love
Clarissa (explains it all)
Cordelia (DD was sooo close to being this as I love Buffy). If I met a drusilla I would also think buffy. I actually know a baby Cordy, she's medium posh.
Petra (know a Swedish one)
Cressida (my old ballet teacher was called this. No idea if she was posh as I was 5 but I thought she was so sophisticated lol)
Camille (Camilla is nice but prefer Camille after RHOBH legend)

I know one daughter of a Lord called Abby.

I know posh Prudence/Flavia/Sarah
