Posh girl names that haven’t filtered through

Just wondering why some names stay within a milieu and others spread.
These are the sorts of names I’m thinking of:
Marina
Cosima
Petra
Cressida
Why do certain names stay within posh circles?

OP posts:

I know a Marina who is absolutely not posh, the opposite in fact!

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 09/10/2020 18:32

I don't understand the question.

What are you after? ...

DrGachet · 09/10/2020 18:33

What about Marina and the Diamonds? Can posh people be welsh?

Not to name any in particular (to avoid offending anyone!) but some of the more convoluted 'posh' names seem quite easy to take the mick out of.

If your child's easy path in life was pretty much guaranteed, this wouldn't be a massive issue or even a consideration if you liked the name. If not, and they would have to navigate a variety of social situations, this might be more of a disincentive to use the name.

Many threads here on baby names will have posters saying 'he will probably be nicknamed xyz at school, I wouldn't use it'.

CokeEnStock · 09/10/2020 18:47

Maude

BinkyBoinky · 09/10/2020 18:51

Octavia
Hortense
Tabitha

Petra and Cressida seem quite ordinary to me.

OneEpisode · 09/10/2020 18:54

Oh I like Maude. Not many of those around here though, so being everyone’s landlord or employer might help?

TheQueef · 09/10/2020 18:54

Probably named after a dead relative but fallen out of use, lots of boys names too.

Cheesypea · 09/10/2020 18:55

The same ways some other names sound working class- remember sharon and tracy.

AuntieMarys · 09/10/2020 18:55

Lettice

Horsemad · 09/10/2020 18:56

Serena

OneEpisode · 09/10/2020 18:57

One of the main characters in Battlestar Galactica is Sharon. US made so different context.

HavelockVetinari · 09/10/2020 18:59

Yeah, names like Tabitha, Arabella etc. are a bit too "niche" for most people I reckon

Cam2020 · 09/10/2020 19:01

How popular are some of these names amongst 'posh' people though? Probably not as popular as Charlotte, Elizabeth etc.

Some of these names hail from mythology/ literature/antiquity that maybe not everyone has had exposure to., some are just bloody horrible sounding!

Cheesypea · 09/10/2020 19:01

^ hopefully the future will be a classless society so it wont matter if your called sharon or felicity.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 09/10/2020 19:02

Maud is one of my favourite names ever, though I prefer it unadorned. It feels earthy and D. H Lawrence-ish to me.

autumnredhead · 09/10/2020 19:02

Victoria

autumnredhead · 09/10/2020 19:05

Aurelia
Ophelia

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/10/2020 19:06

Queen Elizabeth I
This name doesn't seem to crop up often in my locale - and I think she was a bit posh.

AliasGrape · 09/10/2020 19:08

I know 2 Tabithas who are definitely middle class but not particularly posh.

I know what you mean OP, when I was growing up Henry and Hugo were definitely posh boy names but fairly standard now.

I considered both Marina and Arabella for DD but didn’t go with either, but then we are not posh.
