Posh girl names that haven’t filtered through

Just wondering why some names stay within a milieu and others spread.
These are the sorts of names I’m thinking of:
Marina
Cosima
Petra
Cressida
Why do certain names stay within posh circles?

As PPs have said, us very posh folk tend to choose classic names for our kids.

Although, has anyone mentioned Venetia?

I know people who go by most of the other names on here though.

oakleaffy · 09/10/2020 20:58

Cressida reminds me of a damp flannel with seeds growing on it.

Mustard and cress.
I have a waft of cress and egg sandwiches on hearing the name.

Kind of gutted my favourite posh girl name hasn't been mentioned yet: Plum.

Only met her once or twice, but the wife of an ex-colleague is called Vanetia. Slightly different spelling.

XingMing · 09/10/2020 21:00

@Tiggy. posh Americans (they exist) have nicknames that are ultimately far, far posher than the UK would believe possible. Like Biff or Junior. The name comes with a pedigree that is innate and secure, with Roman numerals. So John Smith VII, could easily be known (to his close friends) as... John Smith. The US is really not as class-neutral as is made out.

MrsSchadenfreude · 09/10/2020 21:00

Annunziata is Catholic rather than posh.

My name has made the list, as has DD1’s. Grin

DD1 has a friend called Araminta. She is know as Mince.

Properly posh people have safe, dull, Royal Family names like Anne, Alexandra, Victoria, Elizabeth.

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2020 21:01

Camomila · 09/10/2020 21:03

I'd use Aurelia (am not posh and have two DSs)

I had a great aunt Clotilde (also not posh)

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2020 21:04

I know quite a few posh people called Tricia, but I also know a lot of not-posh people called Tricia too.

XingMing · 09/10/2020 21:05

They do not stay in the same circles though. As upthread confirms. The internet is a "gamechanger". Not just wider information on names, but choices over everything that underpins human life.

Just wondering why some names stay within a milieu and others spread

Social media, is everything. Names will stick as labels long after goods and services come through.

XingMing · 09/10/2020 21:07

Really posh names are (nowadays) quite/very sedate, I think.

DelphiniumBlue · 09/10/2020 21:07

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

Annunziata anyone? Actually I know two posh women, one is Cathy and the other, the very very posh one is a Julie🤷‍♀️
DH was at school with Annunziata and Immaculata in the 60's in a very working class town up north. Not saying exactly where as too outing- he's been dining out on the story behind it for years. Some names might be posh in England but not in other countries - eg Petra is quite commonplace in Germany. Victoria ( Vicky) was also not a posh name when I was growing up ( admittedly quite a while ago now). I do wonder why Diana isn't more popular - I did expect a popularity surge after the death of Princess Di, and it never happened.
oakleaffy · 09/10/2020 21:08

Lucinda.

XingMing · 09/10/2020 21:10

Apart from the usual oddballs who want to lumber their children with a memorable name.

AudTheDeepMinded · 09/10/2020 21:11

I knew a Drusilla at work. Expected her to be posh and she really wasn't.

Lucindas, I've known a few, are always called Luke.

TrainspottingWelsh · 09/10/2020 21:14

@XingMing nah, even the blue bloods that can trace their ancestry to the Mayflower are essentially new money Grin

keeprocking · 09/10/2020 21:15

@Notnownotneverever

I don't link Marina as a posh name at all. I know two and they are not posh in the slightest.
All I hear when I see Marina is one of the 60s space programme's theme songs, 'Marina, aqua Marina', shows how old I am!
Vinorosso74 · 09/10/2020 21:15

Marina isn't posh neither are Felicia or Serena. People I've met with this names have been quite down to earth.
Names like Persephone, Lucinda, Petronella, Camilla, Cecily I view as posh.

Ravenesque · 09/10/2020 21:18

I have a cousin called Marina. She's absolutely lovely but definitely not posh.
