Posh girl names that haven’t filtered through

Just wondering why some names stay within a milieu and others spread.
These are the sorts of names I’m thinking of:
Marina
Cosima
Petra
Cressida
Why do certain names stay within posh circles?

OP posts:
Iwasonceabrownie · 09/10/2020 19:50

Harriet
Henrietta

SirGawain · 09/10/2020 19:51

Cosima

Sounds like one of those cheap Rusian radios or record players you could buy in the 1960s.

WildRosie · 09/10/2020 19:51

Octavia was the name of the ostrich on Pipkins which might explain its lack of popularity since the mid-1970s.

We have an Allegra at our school

Another one here who would like to know - what is your exact question OP?

Peakypolly · 09/10/2020 19:53

Loads of Amelia's round here and none of them gentry.
I think the names to which you refer are aspirational and trying to be 'posh' ; I know a Persephone and Cressida for example and the parents are very nouveau riche.
The 'old money' set opt for Alice, Lucinda, Charles, John etc.

BlueThursday · 09/10/2020 19:53

I love love love the name Genevieve but sadly, coming from north Glasgow, I could never get away with using it

TrickyD · 09/10/2020 19:54

A hyphenated Mae on the end of each would immediately stop them being posh.

MorganKitten · 09/10/2020 19:54

All of the names mentioned so far Ive known normal people to have

clumpysoles · 09/10/2020 19:54

I know a very smart Portia, her mum was a English teacher so presumably a Shakespeare fan.

Skyliner001 · 09/10/2020 19:55

New money names.

Not posh.

feellikeanalien · 09/10/2020 19:58

@Jelly4444 My cat is called Athena.Grin

IAmBeatrixKiddo · 09/10/2020 20:01

Perdita (although I really love this name)

GreyHare · 09/10/2020 20:03

Ha my cat is called Maude, and it utterly suits her.

Bluewavescrashing · 09/10/2020 20:04

Actually, my name's Marina...

I like Marina but don't think it's posh. Araminta nn Minty is cute.

Clementine
Aurelia
Persephone

Bluewavescrashing · 09/10/2020 20:05

I love Genevieive and Penelope too.

Lovemusic33 · 09/10/2020 20:08

My grandmother was Maud, she wasn’t posh at all 🤣

I think classic names such as Elizabeth, Catherine and Victoria are more post than the ones OP listed.

Minimumstandard · 09/10/2020 20:09

Marina and Petra seem quite ordinary to me. I would say posh girl names that haven't become generally popular include:

Frances
Henrietta
Portia
Felicity
Camilla
Helen
Eugenia
Constance
Gwendolyn
Veronica

Jelly4444 · 09/10/2020 20:09

@feellikeanalien thats the fanciest cat name I have ever heard Grin

Jumpingkangeroo · 09/10/2020 20:09

Yes I completely agree with this, the landed gentry are John, James and Alice.
Notnownotneverever · 09/10/2020 20:09

I don't link Marina as a posh name at all. I know two and they are not posh in the slightest.

BrummyMum1 · 09/10/2020 20:10

Love that my daughter’s name has been mentioned in this thread. Nice to feel a bit posh now and again 😁

Jumpingkangeroo · 09/10/2020 20:10

A lot of these names are too aspirational for the upper class.

dementedma · 09/10/2020 20:10

Poshest females I know are Hattie, Fenella,Ginny,Kirsty, Charlotte,Kate

SwedishEdith · 09/10/2020 20:11

I know a Petra but, too be honest, most of these sound like Boris Johnson's daughters or shagees. So, I get he OP's point that some names don't filter beyond their very particular set. Very Evelyn Waugh.
