Montelukast SUCCESS STORIES???

Justwingingmotherhood · 09/10/2020 08:03

so my dd is 3.5 years old, she has a CONSTANT cough which gets worse when shes back at nursery. Inhalers dont work for her so shes been prescribed montelukast, 2 weeks ago Blush and I'm yet to try them because quite frankly I'm to scared after hearing all the horror stories. Shes going for some allergy testing tomorrow so I'll also speak with them also but can anybody share some success stories with this drug? I'm at my wits end. Daffodil

DS has been on it every winter for years with no side effects at all.

iamaswashbuckler · 09/10/2020 08:06

My DS was on it from 6 months old to 5 and it worked really well for him. He used to cough constantly at night and once on this it went completely. The only side effect that potentially concerned me was the behaviour issues and I am not sure if I could pin point this as the cause or just general age related behaviour, but I would recommend this from my experience.

EvilHerbivore · 09/10/2020 08:07

My DS is on it constantly throughout the year - before it he was hospitalised for his asthma every 2/3 months for at least a week at a time and now he hasn't needed an admission in 2 years
I know that there's research showing adverse effects but for us, it's helped massively

I know more people who have been fine with it than not. Side effects are horrible but thankfully not the norm (my son had awful effects, which made me look into it all).

All I would say is to be aware of potential side effects, and if your dd shows any of them to stop immediately.

Justwingingmotherhood · 09/10/2020 08:13

Thanks all! It does seem to be the winter that makes it worse so maybe I can try her this winter and see how we get on! Good to hear of some success stories!

My daughter started on Montelucast aged 3 and it was a game changer. No side effects, and we all finally got some sleep instead of her coughing her way through the night.

KillingOksana1 · 11/10/2020 13:18

I'm on Montelukasat and have had no side effects. The relief I get from it is huge.

MillieVanilla · 11/10/2020 13:19

If it doesn't work for her or she does get side effects, my son has used Prednisolone for many years when necessary. I find it helpful to know of alternatives to suggest.

sadonfriday · 11/10/2020 13:20

It’s been a life changer for my son. No side effects at all

OohKittens · 11/10/2020 13:26

My son has been on it for 13 years since he was 6mnths old. He also takes azythromycin long term, and 8 steroid tablets a day alongside 3 inhalers. But he has brittle asthma which was diagnosed when he was a baby because of family history.

Longdistance · 11/10/2020 13:34

I had it when I had a constant cough with my asthma. It seemed to open my airways and give me relief. No side effects at all.

Lisette1940 · 11/10/2020 13:34

Game changer for my son. Has allergic asthma and it's really helped the cough. No side effects.

beautyisfoundwithin · 11/10/2020 13:44

My husband has been on it for a couple of years and is very happy with it, no side effects at all.

sidsgranny · 11/10/2020 13:47

I'm on Montelukast and also have 4 Xolair injections every other week and the 2 combined have made an amazing difference.

Justwingingmotherhood · 12/10/2020 19:02

Oh fabulous! Sorry to hear about all of your struggles. Shes just taken her first dose so fingere crossed Smile

Also can anybody tell me how long it took you to see the full effect? Thanks

We’ve had nothing but positive experiences with it. DD been on it for about 8 years and no side effects but it definitely helped!

Bargebill19 · 12/10/2020 19:07

Game changer for me. Takes about 5 days to see the full effect, but noticeable difference in my asthma after just one day.
It’s like marmite. Some people get on well with it and some it makes no difference or has side effects. You don’t know until you try it.

MoonBaby1 · 12/10/2020 19:10

Ds 7 takes it and has been taking his row enter far less.

It took about 2 weeks to see the full effect.

Justwingingmotherhood · 12/10/2020 19:36

Thank you all

My Dd went on it last winter, absolute game changer for us. She now no longer keeps the whole house up with her cough and she is so much better for having a proper night's sleep.

Justwingingmotherhood · 12/10/2020 19:57

@Bitchysideisouttoplay brilliant! I can imagine it was a massive relief for you also. My daughter isn't a severe asthmatic but she does also seem to have a cough, winter time and after colds always makes it worse. And she struggles with lingering coughs. So I'm hoping this will offer some relief as nothing ever seems to work.

Myself and my adult son

RyvitaBrevis · 12/10/2020 22:19

In my experience it took a month to work properly, and it needs to be taken consistently. I think it's a wonder drug, it helped reduce my allergic reactions as well as control my asthma, and I had absolutely no side effects.

FourFlapjacksPlease · 12/10/2020 22:22

life changingly brilliant for my son! No side effects at all and worked incredibly quickly.
