And in order of 3 most favourite, what do you get?

We get about every 3 months

  1. Greek: souvlaki kebab platter.
  2. Fish and chips
  3. Thai.

Yes have to say I didn’t find @Friendsoftheearth’s post rude or defensive at all, I thought it was a lovely post pointing out there’s a lot of joy in just enjoying food, and you don’t always have to be worrying about calories and nutrients at every meal.

I didn’t get the sense at all that they were ‘accusing’ anyone of having an eating disorder or being blasé about such things.

I don’t think that was the intention at all @Seychelles98

@Collidascope

Don't take this the wrong way but if you eat takeaways once or twice a week are seriously you happy with your weight or do you put weight gain down to the takeaways?

I get takeaway once or twice a week. I'm a size 10 at most.

Same here. Size 8/10 and none of my family are overweight either.

Then again I've always said a lot of weight gain is down to the amount of food eaten, not necessarily what the food is.

Just because you order a pizza for example, doesn't mean you have to eat the whole thing.

Same with Chinese/Indian takeaway. You don't have to order enough to feed a village.

@Seychelles98

I'm shocked that some of you have takeaways once or twice a week! Firstly all that salt and saturated fat not to mention hidden sugar! Also how can you afford it as most are so overpriced... I'd be worried about the hygiene in some of the kitchens...

Don't take this the wrong way but if you eat takeaways once or twice a week are seriously you happy with your weight or do you put weight gain down to the takeaways? Most have a full days calories or more in one takeaway...

There nothing forcing you to have large portions or fatty foid for takeaway.

Loads of people have said, they share a curry for example. Or like we have grilled kebabs, with salad and rice from the Greek takeaway 🤷

@Kandinsko agreed

Lonoxo · 07/10/2020 17:51

I have a young child and meals out are hard work as she just won’t sit still so sometimes we will order a takeaway to celebrate an occasion (birthday, Mother’s Day) as it’s easier than eating out. I would prefer dining out to cut down on packaging waste and for a change of scene. The only exception is fish and chips, don’t mind that as a takeaway.

Also, sometimes we get one if we can’t be asked to cook or we are bored of what we are eating. So once every 2 months.

  1. Fish and chips.
  2. Indian.
  3. Chinese.
vampirethriller · 07/10/2020 18:01

I've had two this year, I get enough for the next day as well. Japanese is my favourite but that's gone very expensive where I am so I get Chinese.

daisychain1620 · 07/10/2020 18:08

I think there is nothing wrong with have a take away once or twice a week. I feel like it is our treat, I don't smoke or drink very much and when I cook the rest of our meals they are made from scratch and are healthy and balanced. As a family we are very active and quite fit, so I don't see it's a problem. However it might be a different story if we were very sedentary folk as our weight would probably be effected

mbosnz · 07/10/2020 18:12

Well, DH and I looked at each other tonight, realised we both looked and felt like shit, and yup, option B it is.

MsEllany · 07/10/2020 18:16

Either once a month - maybe - or twice a week. Really depends on the week!

Top choice would be lamb biryani and chicken tikka masala OR Greek gyros, but the Greek place has been shut since Covid.

Kids like pizza or burger. We’re so close to so many different takeaway places.

AlternativePerspective · 07/10/2020 18:22

I am Shock at the number of people who have takeaway two/three times a week. Quite apart from the health issues, the cost must be astronomical. Given most takeaways have a minimum order of around £15, people must be spending upwards of around £120 a month on takeaway. Shock I must say that the health implications would be something I would think seriously about. Living on takeaway is akin to living on ready meals IMO.

I’ve had maybe ten takeaways in the past four years, and every time I do I regret doing so because they just never live up to my expectations. So now I don’t bother.

mbosnz · 07/10/2020 18:28

Um, if you're having takeaways for two meals, that's another 19 meals that are not takeaways. Scarcely 'living on them'. . .

We make sure that most of our food is home-cooked, from scratch, if we have a meat and veges meal, then we have at least five types of veges with that, we eat at least two servings of fruit every day as well. . . reckon that the scales of our diet are mostly balanced on the side for good.

No health issues - no blood pressure, cholesterol, heart, diabetes, not seriously overweight going into our fifties, can run 5k quite happily. . . so we're not too concerned. Girls are very fit, active and healthy, not overweight, if anything, one could stand to have a bit more cover over the bones. . .

doadeer · 07/10/2020 18:30

The takeaways we get are from restaurants - we haven't been out for 22m just me and DH in an evening so for us, it's the same as going out for dinner. Not all takeaways are just grease and salt.

OhToBeASeahorse · 07/10/2020 19:10

I still dont understand why people are horrified about how other people spend their money.

Also dont understand where you are getting all these pricey takeaways from. As I said up thread, fish and chips for us is about 8 quid. For both of us.

corythatwas · 07/10/2020 19:20

Every other month or so. When I was doing my postgrad I used to live off them. But that was from proper restaurants, they did special deals at lunchtime which you could collect so I would make the takeaway last for both lunch and dinner, just adding fruit from the market. And they were good meals- Persian, Indian, Ethopian even for a while.

Where I live now, it's a choice between Indian and Chinese, but both quite nice.

Dd lives in London and last couple of times we've been to see her we've had Vietnamese takeaways: lots of veg and really nice broth.

If I had the choice, I'd go for Vietnamese or Thai.

Blimey, that's cheap! We'd be paying around £6-7 for an adult fish and chips.

We share a large, otherwise I just throw millions of chips away.

Mxflamingnoravera · 07/10/2020 19:57

Twice a year maybe. Fish and chips or pizza, but it has to be really good pizza.

MrDarcysMa · 07/10/2020 19:58

About once a fortnight - sometimes every week.
Stuff I can't easily cook the same as the restaurants! So curry with all the accompaniments, pizza, very occasionally fish and chips

Home made pizza is much nicer than most takeaway ones. Plus you can put exactly what you want on it and eat it piping hot.

Fish and chips also is easy to cook. Home made chips are so much nicer than chip shop ones.

We only really get indian because although both me and DH can cook really good curries plus onion bhajis, parathas etc we can't cook decent naan breads because they really need a tandoor

BarbaraofSeville · 07/10/2020 21:30

I've never seen this, they let you buy exactly what you like where we are. Sometimes it's just a bag of chips for £2.

If we both get Chinese it's £12-15 but that's a massive amount of food that does 2 meals for DP and 3 for me.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/10/2020 21:35

But home made pizza is quite a lot of effort and time, hardly what you'd do if you couldn't be arsed cooking.

If we want pizza we either go out to one of at least half a dozen wood fired places, get a takeaway from a place that's converted their festival and wedding pizza van to takeaway from an industrial estate or cook one of the crosta and mollicas we keep in the freezer. I don't think I'll ever bother making pizza at home again.

Hardbackwriter · 07/10/2020 21:42

Also how can you afford it as most are so overpriced...

Shock news just in: people have different levels of disposable income.

Downwithcovid · 07/10/2020 21:53

@Hardbackwriter

Shock news just in: people have different levels of disposable income.

More shock news. People spend their money in different ways.

Our bathroom is old but clean and works. Lots of people would spend the £8k we were quoted to redo it. I can’t be arsed. It works fine and I would rather spend that money on making my already hectic life easier and more enjoyable.

The people I know who tend to say they can’t afford some of the luxuries I like to afford myself are spending £400 a month on each car, then 2.5k plus on a mortgage or rent. Then complain they don’t have disposable income for nights out etc.

Downwithcovid · 07/10/2020 21:59

Oh, and my revolut card just informed me I spent £1248 in bars and restaurants in September. I dare not look at what DH spent 🙈
