So was on strong antibiotics for an infection two weeks ago. Took probiotics, loads of natural yoghurt etc but I’ve developed thrush. It’s been years since I’ve had this and it’s awful omg. I can’t sleep etc.
I live in Ireland and we can’t get any otc medication except for canesten and canesten pessary.. In order for me to get the oral medication (which I know worked really well for me before) I have to pay 50 euros to see a gp and more money for the prescription..yup..
I used the pessary Thursday night and definitely noticed a big improvement on Friday morning, it’s Saturday and it’s back with a vengeance. TMI but i think I mightn’t have put it up far enough. How far should it go up ?(sorry) I have issues with the applicator and was using my fingers. I have problems with this anyway as really struggle with things like this like I don’t ever use tampons etc.
Can I try another pessary? How long should it take to work. It’s the weekend , dh working all day , 3 active kids and it’s driving me crazy. A weekend dr here is 80 euros +the cost of the mediation.. I’ve tried tea tree oil , natural yogurt , cotton underpants etc.. Any advice or experiences with pessary welcome

Yes .Repeat the pessary. Can you get the capsule via Amazon prime?

dementedpixie · 03/10/2020 10:11

You can buy generic oral tablets online. I bought some to have in the house

Really @dementedpixie? What online pharmacy would you recommend? Thanks both for advice

Look for flucanazole tablets/capsules. It might have been Chemist Direct i used. There are a few options online and cheaper than the branded stuff

Emmnooo · 03/10/2020 10:45

Thanks @dementedpixie, here’s hoping they deliver to Ireland

Oh that is awful you can't just buy OTC medication its the only thing that shifts thrush for me . I use Boots or Pharmacy own the canasten is £25. Anyway just buy it and get it sent.

Mrsjayy · 03/10/2020 10:50

Oral medication * is what I meant

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 03/10/2020 10:53

I have recurrent thrush and find the canesten soft gel pessary to be the best treatment by far. You need to put it up behind your cervix.

MumChats · 03/10/2020 10:58

I get thrush all the time! Agree with PPs who have said to get the oral stuff, so much more effective. You can get it without a prescription on online pharmacies as PP said and also in larger pharmacies here (England) you can get it OTC. Ive bought a canesten pack with cream+tablet from a big Boots before. Good luck. Thrush is the worst.

Emmnooo · 03/10/2020 10:58

As suspected they don’t ship to Ireland ... such a joke this country health wise..
They only had one type of pessary here with canesten , it’s a hard tablet type thing . Will have to try again .

What is the reason for not being able to buy it ?

Emmnooo · 03/10/2020 11:25

Think Ireland is so controlling this way with pharmaceuticals, dr maybe get a cut or something. There’s loads of stuff we can’t buy here otc like piriton for children , nightnurse and I can imagine a lot of online pharmacies are blocked from sending stuff here...

Mrsjayy · 03/10/2020 11:29

I had no idea, hope you get something do you know anybody in NI who can get it for you ? Do a thrush treatment deal at the border Grin

Emmnooo · 03/10/2020 11:33

Haha @Mrsjayy, I might end up in some breaking bad type situation yet manufacturing the ole thrush treatment on the black for all the itchy Irish women.....

Would be for the greater good !

MellowMelly · 03/10/2020 11:43

Did you try Amazon like someone else suggested or was it the same outcome as trying to get from a Chemist?

Emmnooo · 03/10/2020 11:45

Same with amazon. Like it makes sense as if we could get it online here the gps would lose out a lot.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 03/10/2020 11:51

Would a consultation with a pharmacist not mean you could buy it from a chemist or do you definitely need to see a GP?

Emmnooo · 03/10/2020 11:58

I’ve been to the pharmacies , they won’t sell it without prescription

Try cutting sugary foods and carbohydrates to a minimum for a few days and see if that helps. MumChats: If you get thrush all the time might be worth getting tested for diabetes, or watching your diet closely. I used to get thrush all the time and it was a precursor to being diagnosed with Type 1

MellowMelly · 03/10/2020 12:22

I think that’s terrible! I used to get awful thrush monthly with my period so know how desperate you must be feeling.

I would go knickerless and put a dress/skirt on and ‘air’ myself down there, legs akimbo style when I had it really bad.

Emmnooo · 03/10/2020 16:19

Got another pessary but have to wait until tonight as better not to be moving around. I’ll have to try the applicator but I really struggle with this , I’m honestly afraid to push it too far , I know that sounds ridiculous 😫

Wheytaminute · 03/10/2020 16:24

Gosh OP - that sounds so unfair that you struggle to get this stuff OTC.

I'd try the pessary again - it can take a while to work - more than a day. Hopefully this second attempt should blitz it.

Just as an aside - how old are you? I thought I was getting recurrent thrush for months and months - very itchy all the time. Unbearably so. Turns out I was in perimenopause and was prescribed Vagifem. It's worked a treat - 2 years on and no issues itching wise. Just a thought.

Emmnooo · 03/10/2020 16:41

I’m 35 so maybe pre-menopausal? I had to take strong antibiotics and once if finished it happened! Really hoping the 2nd one will work..
