Anyone around to keep me company. Waiting for my op and getting jittery

Waiting on my new hip after having a major wobble and wanting to go home yesterday.

Old timers may remember me (D0G) I had an accident 5 years ago a horse fell on me and I broke everything pretty much haha.

I'm hoping this may finally be an end to my pain. I was meant to be done yesterday but they had an emergency so been waiting around which doesn't help when you've psyched yourself up. Anyone feel free to give me positive new hip stories. I also need a stern talking to about not running away and cancelling - the ward next door has a possible Covid case, and although it feels like my millionth op it's a bit scary in A pandemic plus it's being done under epidural not GA which seems a bit scary I do need a big dose of "get a grip"

I think you're doing amazingly well to be there & not have run away!! As for epidural mot GA - not a bloody hope! You're very brave!

But just think...it'll be over soon and your hip
pain will be gone 🌷

Seriously though - it’s normal to be scared. Especially now. Everything feels so uncertain. It’s scary to think you may catch the virus too.

I had surgery on my knee years ago under epidural. I was scared too and they gave me something to send me to sleep but not a general. I had just started IVF and had to stick to a strict timetable of meds etc so I was worried I would miss a dose hence not wanting a general although it was offered. (I was in Bangkok at the time and they did whatever you wanted once you paid.)

I remember your horse incident. It sounded horrific. I hope your new hip helps.

It's actually almost 6 years now which is mad. It's funny I've not been on here properly for ages, since it was all fields Grin. But times like now it's invaluable and feels like home

My aunt had hers done under epidural and she said it was fine (and she's the biggest wimp going!) She had a nurse sitting with her just to make sure she was okay.

That is Reassuring thank you. I'm actually genuinely not that wimpy I think it's just the Covid and no GA that's shaken me a touch

Forget Covid. You're in the cleanest and most careful place.

Epidural - it'll be fine. Safer than GA! And do they give you earphones to listen to music or the radio? That helps. And just keep thinking Thank God this is getting sorted!!! Think Thank you guys! Go for it! to the operating team. Let them carry you through - this is a team effort, fuelled by huge positivity - and the knowledge that they have this, and will fix it for you. 😀👌

Certainly will not tell you to "get a grip": am awestruck by what you've been through and overcome!

  • You're clearly not lacking in the inner grit dept.
  • You're in safe hands.
  • Just imagine how much easier and more joyful life will soon feel, without the debilitating, exhausting pain: a new start.

Aw, I have a couple of friends who have had hip replacements. Both of them have done really well. Important to do the follow up rehab, they both said. Just wondering, how your recovery went from your shoulder replacement? Thinking of you, and hope you will soon be painfree.

Where the hell did 6 years go D0G? This is so much easier than being under a horse. Grin

Just think how much better this will be once it has been done. Clearly there is a reason to replace it and you really are in the safest place re covid. That place will be so clean you could eat your dinner off it as my Mum would say.

Do come back and tell us strangers, the nest of vipers, how you got on. Best of luck to you. Flowers or would you prefer Gin?

Ah bless you - as a fellow horse rider I do hope this new op will get you back in the saddle pain free? If so use that as a positive reference to focus on.
If you are worried about being awake due to epidural- ask to be sedated then you will have a nice 😴

Thinking of you I hope it all goes well as a pp has said I find when doing things you would rather not I count the time in chunks and think what I will be doing at that time tomorrow and then the next day etc etc - probably not helpful but ThanksGin

Whitegrenache I'm hoping so, I have a youngster to break fairly soon once she's had her foal. Weirdly riding wasn't too painful until after. Consultant has advised me to do my best not to fall off post op and no jumping but we will see. I have a nice horse now who I trust with my life and I feel to young to put my SJ stuff away.

Definitely trying to count time in chunks - I came so close to going home last night - glad I got a grip :-)

My shoulder replacement went so well much like my hip I was in so much pain so was almost instant relief. I think I'd had about 8 ops previously on it so was nice to get it finally sorted

Gosh, I remember your original thread! That was never 6 years ago!!

My dad had two hip replacements and recovered amazingly well. He had his first done at 85 and his second (after a fall and a fracture) on his 94th birthday. The difference before and after was astonishing. I hope yours goes as smoothly and makes a dramatic difference to your pain.

My dad has both his hips replaced in his 50s. While one squeaks a little, he has completely regained his mobility to the point where he is back using indoor climbing walls! If it’s like his op, they will insist on you taking the maximum dose on painkillers on a regular basis to ensure that you get moving again ASAP.

I had a hip replacement last year OP and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Constant daily pain really wears you down after a bit.
Hopefully you’ve had the operation now and are recovering nicely.
As a PP said make sure to follow the regime they give you, both pain relief and exercise as they definitely help you to get up and moving again Flowers

My Pilates teacher has had a hip replacement. If I recall, she took up Pilates after the op. So it definitely doesn't have to slow you down!

I'm all done. It was a doddle. So much nicer than GA just wide awake as soon as they were done.

Feeling so itchy I could rip my skin off. I think that's the effects of the epidural wearing off.

They showed me my bone which was awesome - think it was a compromise as I did ask if they'd film it 😂

Glad it went well. Itching is definitely because of the epidural wearing off. It's horrible, see if they can give you something for it.
