As I want to make some plans but I’m unsure what’s happening

It sounds as if the govt and the scientists are still thrashing this out as we speak... but put it this way... I wouldn't make travel plans for then right now. Too much uncertainty.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/09/2020 11:36

@Lardlizard

Only thinking of making plans to go somewhere in the U.K. but I agree any plans need to be made with knowing that’s a strong chance it could get cancelled Could just do with a change of scene for a few days
I've just cancelled our Wales holiday for half-term. Honestly even if there isn't a National Lockdown your region or the place you're going to could lockdown with a few days notice
IwishIwasyoda · 30/09/2020 11:39

FFS I hope not. What the fuck I would do with DC (again) is beyond me. I really wanted to go and see vulnerable MIL as we haven't seen her all year

StealthPolarBear · 30/09/2020 11:40

Yes I think they'll do something similar to what's being suggested on this thread

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 30/09/2020 11:40

Even Boris Grin

Especially not Boris more like...

IwishIwasyoda · 30/09/2020 11:41

And lockdowns don't work as you have to open up again at some point and then cases just rise again ...

DumplingsAndStew · 30/09/2020 11:41

No.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/09/2020 11:43

Thing is it night not matter if they're a difference in days assuming within a region or falls within two weeks.
So all schools in the West Midlands have 16-20 or 21-3 November so you lockdown the West Midlands for that fortnighy with travel outside the region forbade. If Sussex have theres 21-3 or 4-18 you do the same there and lock them down those two weeks.

What work places will do is a different matter

Newpuppymummy · 30/09/2020 11:43

I don’t think so. There will be a lot of people who have booked U.K. breaks

Disconnect · 30/09/2020 11:49

@Nestme

Yes. I hope they do and have learnt the lessons from Feb half term - but I doubt they have.
I agree. I think there will lockdown-type restrictions, but not sure whether they will apply to travel (and if they do, they should be for international travel as well as national - still annoyed that people were allowed freely in and out of the country while we were all told not to even travel for exercise).
Chewbecca · 30/09/2020 11:51

I hope not but fear yes.

I have 2 x 2 night UK breaks booked in October. Neither in areas with high numbers. (Both looooong arranged btw).

Lovemusic33 · 30/09/2020 12:02

I think it’s likely to happen, there has been talk about it, same with Christmas but I’m guessing we won’t know until the last minute. Not sure how this will work as many people would have book holidays for half term week (me being one of them).

Nonamesavail · 30/09/2020 12:05

I dont think there will be.

VintageStitchers · 30/09/2020 12:05

Fucking Just stay at home and utilise your nearest parks.

How hard is that?

I’m sick of people booking holidays In touristy places and potentially bringing Covid with them. We’ve already had to stay away from our local parks and beaches all summer but I had hoped we might get the opportunity to go for walks during half term without having annoying visitors turning up in their droves and leaving all their mess behind for the locals to pick up.

Selfish fuckers.

Ah that word again.

You're allowed to be annoyed at the litter, but I don't believe the evidence shows a spike in tourist areas because of visitors.

FourTeaFallOut · 30/09/2020 12:11

Tbf, I only go on holiday to piss of the locals, throw some litter around and then fuck off home.

MrsHSW · 30/09/2020 12:12

There has been a lot of talk of a 2 week Oct half term. Was thinking of booking a break for the first week of November, but now not sure if to proceed. A lot of places have changed their refund polices so may not get money back. And a lot of areas are in local lockdown so not open to visitors. Hopefully Boris gives us some notice this time! I think something will have to be done, cases are really rising...just not sure if we can wait until October half term...so thinking the week before more likely than the week after.

MrsJBaptiste · 30/09/2020 12:13

@Bickles

If they do this will they close Universities too? They don’t have a half term, in fact teaching will be just getting going and some courses have quite a bit of face to face (masked!) timetabled.
Oh. My. God. They'd better not do this at Universities!

I have spent the last 6 months working my arse off ensuring that students have a mix of on campus/online teaching and have worked it out week by week. To stick in an extra week off would floor everything...

However my sister is a teacher and mentioned the possibility of a two week half term when I saw her last month.

AlternativePerspective · 30/09/2020 12:14

No. It is ludicrous to suggest that they will be planning a lockdown for a few weeks time, by which time the figures could be even higher.

The death rate has doubled since last week, if that and the infection rate keep going that way then half term will be too late.

You honestly can’t say “I know, let’s let the virus run for a bit, and then we’ll lock down in a few weeks time....” if they do something they have to do it now

That being said, making plans is a bad idea because the area you want to go to could be locked down at any point.

I’m in London and it’s widely rumoured that we’ll be going back into lockdown soon, and there are rumours about other areas in the north-east.... it’s only really the south-west who are pretty much free at the moment.

Quickchange5 · 30/09/2020 12:14

I really hope they don’t - got a week booked self catering - wouldn’t be surprised if they do .

Also worried about Christmas as elderly parent is due to come and stay for a week - I’m concerned about their mental health and the quality of their last few years more than I’m worried about them catching the virus.

wishing3 · 30/09/2020 12:17

I think that they will ban any mixing between households, inside and out, across England, reinforce WFH if possible and tat will be it (ie all shops/salons/cinemas etc stay open). I don’t think schools will close... yet.

gingajewel · 30/09/2020 12:18

I genuinely think they will push for a no, industry is already on its knees, closing schools would stop people going to work. The tourism industry has been terribly affected and no revenue in half term would be awful for some places, I think the government will put industry above all else tbh!

52andblue · 30/09/2020 12:18

Yes.
Nicola Sturgeon said (2 weeks ago?) not to make plans for half term.

DumplingsAndStew · 30/09/2020 12:23

@52andblue

Yes. Nicola Sturgeon said (2 weeks ago?) not to make plans for half term.
No, she said if you were planning to book a holiday abroad in October, to consider whether it was essential.
Tfoot75 · 30/09/2020 12:36

Ban on households mixing is probable. The tourism industry must already be on its knees, I think closing it when the NHS is not close to breaking point would be lunacy. People are going to have to accept that some people are going to die, we're in a pandemic and we can't solve it by everyone staying at home and not getting an education or earning any money. Total lockdown was a one off to gain time, there's really no sense in doing it again until the NHS actually can't cope.
