What name(s) do you irrationally hate?

I'll start.

Denise.

I don't know any Denises... I'm sure they're lovely. But the name just rubs me up the wrong way.

NOTE: No Karen bashing please! Because it's been hijacked as a name and it's not fair on Karens.

Lara
It's a really pretty name but I can only associate it with a girl I went to school with who was an absolute cow.

Ava and Freya, after working in schools I've never meet a pleasant one

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 04/04/2021 19:33

Well, there's my first name, my middle name, DP's first name, his son's middle name, my youngest's names, all the men I've ever shagged's names and those of a lot of their siblings, my mother's actual name and the nickname my grandfather gave her, uncles', grandfather's and one of my brothers' names.

Everybody I ever went to school with.

A huge number of people I have worked with.

A fair few doctors.

Oh, and quite a few I think are essentially names, spellings or conventions associated with being not white English.

Not seen three of my siblings' names, but seen all of their children's names.

There are two names on here that I associate with being bullied as a child and then at work.

Lots of absolutely lovely children's names (the children being lovely irrespective of their names, which are fine).

Seems like the only ones to slip through so far those belonging to my grandmother and her sister (also DP's daughter's name), my sister and my eldest's (although her first name nearly came in under somebody having a go at something from the same origin).

The pets seem to have got off scot-free as well.

Oh, well.

PrudenceDictates · 04/04/2021 19:34

Imogen and Megan must be the ugliest names ever. Elodie (pond weed) Aurelia (area around nipple), and Eulalie (doo lally) are pretty awful, too.

Hunter, Clay, Cole, Archer, Atlas and surnamey names.

I recently met a girl called Ripley, which is blooming awful.

PrudenceDictates · 04/04/2021 19:38

Oh and Fleur - Fleurgghh! Sounds like someone throwing up.

Thejoyfulstar · 04/04/2021 19:39

I know of someone who called her son Buster.
When I think about the honour of choosing a name for one's son, one that will represent him well in life, a name steeped in meaning and depth, a strong name that he would be proud to use whatever his walk of life or profession...'Buster' just misses the mark. I could go on about my feelings, but I don't want to be mean about it. Maybe there are kids out there who really suit the name 'Buster' but it seems too much like a flippant toss of the coin, a joke, a bit of a laugh. There are names for kids I don't like, but the thought of someone calling their child 'Buster' actually makes me (irrationally, because it's none of my business) angry.

I dislike misspelt names.

Particularly Jorja, that just ruins Georgia.
Already pointed out, its not Johnathan, or Jonathon, its Jonathan.
Jaxxon is just no as is Maxx.

Solongtoshort · 04/04/2021 19:50

Emma l know a few l don’t like and that Emma mattress advert ones my head in and my 5yo knows it word for word and asks if she cm have one, plus she likes to watch the advert on YouTube. Yes l do have a strange child.

MissMatty2hats · 04/04/2021 20:13

Presumably those “old people” names were given to said old people when they were babies. So their parents must have looked at them and thought he/she looked like an Albert/Ethel. Not inconceivable to think it could happen again.

PrudenceDictates · 04/04/2021 20:16

Eek, I'm so sorry @mbosnz

I actually regretted posting after a bit... its a bit unkind to say horrible things about people's names. Just got carried away with what was going on in the thread! Blush

I think it's rude and ignorant to assume misspelling when they are alternative spellings from other countries.

Lily
Poppy
Daisy
Noah
Casper
Jasper
Joshua

Basically all popular tinkly laugh middle class names.

SummeHoliday · 04/04/2021 20:17

Erin - it's just spiky and pointy
Lorraine
Jaden-Jayden-Jaiden-Jaiyden (and to a lesser extent Kayden, Zaden and similar but I particularly hate Jaden)
Surnames as first names - either gender, but particularly for girls e.g. Bailey, Baxter, Brodie, Taylor (and even worse - Tayla 🤮)
Motor manufacturers names used for boys - Holden, Harley, Ford etc.
Girls' names beginning with T with the exceptions of Tess and Tessa, which are lovely. Teresa, Theresa, Tina - horrid.
Scrabble names - those that appear to have been created from a few random tiles left over at the end of a game.

The names for DD and DS are hated by others though 🤣🤣

Anon778833 · 04/04/2021 20:17

Ottilie - the ugliest try-hard name ever.

AlexandraPeppernose · 04/04/2021 20:18

Sarah
Rebecca

mbosnz · 04/04/2021 20:22

LOL Prudence, it's absolutely fine! I was actually just saying to DH that I really don't have a great connection with my full name (it's what I use in my head when I'm telling myself off, my Mum's style), but on the other hand, the diminutive he gave me, I love.

It's funny, isn't it, the reaction we have to names. And it's all a matter of taste, opinion, and personal experience. (If I never meet another Tyrone, it will be too soon.)
