What name(s) do you irrationally hate?

I'll start.

Denise.

I don't know any Denises... I'm sure they're lovely. But the name just rubs me up the wrong way.

NOTE: No Karen bashing please! Because it's been hijacked as a name and it's not fair on Karens.

Darren
Duncan
Ethan
Paul - unfortunate as we have one in the family!
Shannon
Tabitha - fine for a cat, not for a person
Matilda

I just did a quick search and my name, DH's, and all 3 DC are mentioned in this thread Grin

JanewaysBun · 03/04/2021 10:37

Charlotte - nice name but literally half the people from 0-70 I know are called Charlotte

SweetToffee · 03/04/2021 10:39

Nathaniel
Weird names that pop up as suggestions on MN and I think of that poor kid in school, things like Geronimo, Atlas is a recent one

dotdashdashdash · 03/04/2021 10:44

TheOldRazzleDazzle · 03/04/2021 10:46

Plenty of names not to my taste, but have had a strong dislike of Paul since I can remember. Not keen on equivalents in other languages either. Paolo or Pavel - no, not for me.

DinosApple · 03/04/2021 10:46

Full house, all four of our family names have been mentioned Grin. As have most of my friends and most of the names of the children I work with.

I can't get too over excited by names really, but I'm not keen on Alfie, Archie, Thomas, Teddy, and they are names I liked when I was pregnant. Both my DDs names have been mentioned loads though.

I know an Apple and an Ocean. Ridiculous names that Hollywood types give to their children. North West - why?

PassMeTheWotsits · 03/04/2021 10:53

@ellentree

Plenty of names i rationally dislike, but irrationally, Esmae/Esme. Don't know why as nothing really wrong with them objectively but can't like it. Maybe if I knew a little, nice one, it would grow on me.
Esme just sounds very phlegmy or me
Carrottop73 · 03/04/2021 10:55

Hugo
Victor
Kelly
Jaxon

midsomermurderess · 03/04/2021 10:58

Faith, Hope, Charity are very much names. They are known as 'virtue' names. Jeez, these threads.

YouKnowItsTrue · 03/04/2021 11:01

Taylor, Tyler, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

@Sniv

As a child, I somehow got it into my head that 'Sarah' was the default, most boring girls' name, and should now only be used in books. I'm not sure why, as I only knew one or two and knew many more Samanthas and Hannahs etc. Sara was OK, but I felt a deep well of sympathy for any Sarah I came across, and wondered how their parents could have named them that. Didn't they know it wasn't supposed to be used for real people any more?

I know its completely irrational, but I still feel bad for all the Sarahs out there.

I understand. I think Sarah is a lovely name. It just sounds nice. But growing up in the 80s and 90s, there were so many Sarahs that their parents might have well have named them all Girl. Maybe we should have called each other by our surnames, the way the boys did?

I find some American names and nicknames annoying:

Brick
Skip
Trip
Chip
Missy
Bitsy
Junior

sashh · 03/04/2021 11:11

Surnames as given names. Taylor? Why? And it seems to be used for girls, what if she marries someone with Taylor as a surname? I know she doesn't have to change her surname but lots of people want to.

Jackson, North, Bryan - fine as surnames.

My neighbours have just adopted a dog called Rodney, it should, from now on, only be used for a dog.

ThatsGoodCakeLove · 03/04/2021 11:13

I've met a few boys called Hunter recently.
Its awful. Really, especially awful.
I just can't fathom why someone looks at their lovely newborn baby and thinks 'yes, Hunter.'

lemmein · 03/04/2021 11:23

Eugene 😐

Thefaceofboe · 03/04/2021 11:27

Taylor. Jayden/Hayden/Zayden etc. Samuel. Alfie. Archie. Isla. Max

No idea why i just cant stand any of them Halo

brushlaptop · 03/04/2021 11:29

Freddie

I literally hate it!

Echobelly · 03/04/2021 11:30

Ordinary names with made-up spelling. Look, just call your son Brian, not Brijan, Briahon, Bhryan B'ryan etc. Hmm

I know someone with an "Ocean". Why would you do that to your kid?? 🤦🏼‍♀️
timtam23 · 03/04/2021 11:48

Completely irrational but I don't like:
Esme/Esmée
Isla
Imogen, especially if shortened to Immy
Fenella
Olivia
Seth
Saul
James
Anything hyphenated with May/Mae/Rae
Any of the currently popular names ending in -ie or -y e.g. Archie, Alfie, Charlie, Daisy, Ruby, Sophie, Evie
Of course, despite being determined to avoid all of the above for my own children, one of them is now known by a shortened version of their given name, ending in -ie

Cococoffee · 03/04/2021 11:49

Loads.

All the rhyming ayden names - Hayden/Kayden /Jayden/Caeden/Brayden

Anything hyphenated with May and Lee, especially Lily-May and Jamie-Lee.

Jack/Jake/Jamie. Never met one I liked.

Old fashioned granny and grandad names like Bert, Mabel, Ethel, Clement, Martha. And also all the twee middle class Rudis and Arlos.

But top of my list are names that are ostensibly Irish but in reality are a made up mish-mash of vowels with a fada or two thrown in for good measure with absolutely no regard or awareness of fada rules. takes self off to pedants corner

Bluetrews25 · 03/04/2021 11:51

Old git here.
Is Neveah pronounced 'Never', 'Neeveh' 'Neve' or 'Neevie'? Confused
(I would spell Niamh as Niamh)
