What name(s) do you irrationally hate?

I'll start.

Denise.

I don't know any Denises... I'm sure they're lovely. But the name just rubs me up the wrong way.

NOTE: No Karen bashing please! Because it's been hijacked as a name and it's not fair on Karens.

This is a funny thread. Didn't expect it to stay but since it has, I hate so many names especially some of the old, stuffy "posh" names many people seem to like to hold onto as some sort of sign of "good breeding". So, names you'll find in the RF, for example (and this has nothing to do with the people, just the names and the fact that people fawn over these names as something special).

Elizabeth (Lilibeth- Blueergh)
Charlotte
Kate/Catherine
George
Harry
Victoria
Pippa
Eugene/Eugenie
Beatrice
Augustus
Archie/Archibald
Angus
Ian
Nigel
Keith
Theresa
James
John
Sarah
L' (anything) or D' (anything)
Sebastian
Louise
Franca
Gene
Alastair
Oliver
...

Kaden/Jaden/Callum/Archie/Alfie in little boys, the hyphenated girls names Ellie- whatever. In adults Sarah..never met a nice one usually superficially nice until you get to know them. In men Wayne, Darren..you get the age group lol..

Hadenoughofbloodycovid · 03/04/2021 08:06

Chunkymenrock · 03/04/2021 08:08

Amelia. The awful mealy sound- 'a-mealy-uh', and the medical meaning of it is shocking.
Margo/t. Geriatric, looks like maggot and sounds ridiculous.
Emma/Emily. Yawn, yawn, yawn...
David. Loathsome dickish name.

Chunkymenrock · 03/04/2021 08:08

Rae, Grace, Iris

Tryingtowritelikeahumanbeing · 03/04/2021 08:12

Margo/t. Geriatric, looks like maggot and sounds ridiculous.

Oh forgot this one. Thought I was alone in this. Everyone else seems or pretends to be oblivious to how similar they sound/look (Referring to a particular actress with this name).

chalktheblockwithglitterchalk · 03/04/2021 08:15

Robert ( never met a nice Robert)
Douglas
Ian
Les or Lesley
Rachel

ThreeKneeRepeater · 03/04/2021 08:20

Seth.
It’s just a noise.
Setttttthhhhhh.
And Caleb. Looks like it’s something spelt backwards.

0blio · 03/04/2021 08:20

Amelie - sounds as if parents couldn't make up their mind between Emily and Amelia.

JamieFrasersBigSwingingKilt · 03/04/2021 08:20

Wayne
Gareth
Gary
Dean
Timothy
Noah
Neil
Any of the 'Jayden' type names
Hyphenated names
Amelia
Ruth
Naomi
Imogen
Rachel

All these names jar in some way, to me.

Eminybob · 03/04/2021 08:22

Nevaeh.

dottiedodah · 03/04/2021 08:27

Find double names irritating for some reason . Lucy Jane or Sarah Louise for example .All nice names on their own but together just set me on edge!

sashh · 03/04/2021 08:30

Zoey, Zoe is fine but Zoey I think of as Zoo-ee.

Diminutives as given names, if you want a Katy at least give her Katherine so she has options later. Jack, Harry, Polly - not names.

Also initials as names, it's not cute it looks like you can't write, I once had two in a class who had the same name eg Deejay and DJ (not actual names)

Darren - no idea why I dislike it.

Jess/Jessie I have never taught one who wasn't a handful, Jessicas - not keen on the name but at least they behave,

Agnes (just why?)

In my grandmother's case because she was the fifth girl and they already had an Anne.

Names give to the 'wrong' sex, like Americans using Shaun for girls. And while I'm on the subject of Shaun/Shawn/Sean names linked to a culture that you have no link with.

Spied · 03/04/2021 08:33

I just absolutely despise Margot
Irrational hate also for Phoebe. Looks and sounds so ugly.
Girl in my dd's class is actually called Phebe ( parents didn't like the 'O' so just removed it from the nameGrin) it's beyond awful.
Reuben- makes my teeth itch.grrrr

NeverBeenNormal · 03/04/2021 08:39

SallySeven

I agree with the surname thing. Reminds me of the wonderful Victoria Wood line "Kent! That's not a name - it's a cricket team."

And Paris for a girl. I know two. Paris Hilton is such a ridiculous name. I love the apocryphal statement about babies being named after where they were conceived - that's why there are so many Basildon Travelodges in Essex.

jendifer · 03/04/2021 08:42

Erin, Olivia - make my teeth itch.

Sophie, poppy, Millie - probably some others too but they seem like children’s names and not for adults.

Kai/kayden/kavell/korie etc - mostly association of children i have known

ie names like Evie and Gracie. Too many of them, sounds like a child’s name. It’s the current version of Lisa, Denise, Claire, Sarah of the 1980s.
