Take your Vitamin D

It's officially autumn and noticeably darker, with the dew falling with a sickening thud.
One of the key factors in mortality/morbidity with COVID19 is vitamin D deficiency.

Source:

There is considerable information on the NHS website as well as NIH (US).

I have started my 3000 iu megadose 2 weeks ago and I have a bit more energy and my moods are more stable - think I was vit D deficient most of August. At the latitude of the British Isles you only make Vitamin D from April to early September.

So take your Vitamin D.

@Phoenix21

Thanks for the reminder OP. I’m black, we tend to be low on vitD in general so I’ll be stocking up.
There was a study in Canada testing levels where a decent number of the white participants tested low. Every single black participant tested low. So it's really important.

I'm the colour of slightly off milk and I run outside so I'm probably OK.

I have some 4000IU which sounds strong reading this
And didn’t know about K2
Wondering if it’s too high
I think so, I had 5,000IU and couldn’t take them as they made me feel so ill!
I also had no idea about K2 and think it’s disgusting there is no warning on the packet.

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2020 20:46

Find it annoying that it’s so vague - especially the K2 stuff

I just had a 4000 for first time and I do feel a bit funny!

I didn’t know about k2 either, glad to have read this. It’s a surprise that You can still buy it singly!

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 23/09/2020 20:58

4000iu is max dose from NHS website, anything stronger need medical supervison, go for a lower dose or every other day.

Eugh just bought the spray from boots and now I need to figure out K2 now. No option on boots to cancel the order either.

dementedpixie · 23/09/2020 21:10

I dont take Potassium as well. Probably more of an issue if you are taking the higher doses of vitamin d

TweetUsOnFacebook · 23/09/2020 21:48

I ordered the vit D before reading about the K2 so I ordered this seperate one from Amazon www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072QYGJGX?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 23/09/2020 22:17

Thing is I took 3000iu of vitamin D last year every day from November - February with no issue - maybe don't get too hung up on Vitamin K too much. Your gut should be doing it providing you are eating your veggies and nothing too processes. I will still get some though.

I am taking a high dose - I do have a history of SAD - I might alternate it with a 1000 iu to prevent overdosing.

Don’t forget to take vit D with some fat!

BiBabbles · 24/09/2020 09:47

The research on best dosage for K2 when supplementing is still in early stages. I have read, often attributed to Dr Kate Rhéaume-Bleue who is a naturopathic physician who has written a lot on the topic: 100 mcg K2 (MK-7 type), or 1,000 mcg (MK-4 type) per 1,000 IU of supplemented Vitamin D. There is some evidence for 180mcg for bone health in some populations, and double that in those 60s+ with arterial calcifications in mind, but as I said there is still a lot more research needed.

The best balance with the evidence so far, I think, are the ones that do 1000 IUs of D to 100-200 of MK-7 type K2 (most supplements these days are MK-7 type as it's easier to store).

Also, just a note, if anyone is on warfarin, then they shouldn't be taking K2 supplementation at all, but other types of blood thinners aren't a problem.

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2020 09:54

Can I ask those in the know, I have a fair few 4000iu left. Is it ok to take one every second day instead?

dementedpixie · 24/09/2020 09:57

Yes its fine.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 24/09/2020 10:01

Yes, I am not an MD so if you aren't sure with respect to medication and/existing health conditions please consult your GP.

Ok great thanks both

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2020 10:09

No other existing but appreciate disclaimer always good to include!

InglouriousBasterd · 24/09/2020 10:11

I’m on 4000iu with K2. I was beyond exhausted a few years ago and had bloods done, found a vitamin D level of 8! So after the loading therapy was told I needed to take maximum dose daily.

I can really bloody tell when I’ve run out or I’ve missed a couple of days. Thanks for this thread, it’s reminded me to pick up more gummies for DD!

colouringindoors · 24/09/2020 10:14

thanks OP will get shopping..

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 24/09/2020 12:10

I was surprised to feel a difference if I missed more than 2 days on 3000 iu, my general mood had a noticeable dip. Now that Shark Week is here I wonder if it should feel better - it tends to make my depression/anxiety spike for 2-3 days as well as cravings for dark chocolate.

Just realised I ordered a pack from amazon during lockdown and never opened them. They are 4000 with k2 so that's handy as I had no idea I needed that. Just coincidence. It seems harder to find kids ones with k2 though. Presumably they need that just as much?!

dementedpixie · 24/09/2020 20:59

If the potassium was so important to take alongside then surely it would say so on the nhs website

dementedpixie · 24/09/2020 21:03

Or is it vitamin K? Rather than potassium (K)

dementedpixie · 24/09/2020 21:09

www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-k/ might give idea of amounts, maybe

Comefromaway · 25/09/2020 09:22

Vitamin K pixie
