Take your Vitamin D

It's officially autumn and noticeably darker, with the dew falling with a sickening thud.
One of the key factors in mortality/morbidity with COVID19 is vitamin D deficiency.

Source:

There is considerable information on the NHS website as well as NIH (US).

I have started my 3000 iu megadose 2 weeks ago and I have a bit more energy and my moods are more stable - think I was vit D deficient most of August. At the latitude of the British Isles you only make Vitamin D from April to early September.

So take your Vitamin D.

Yes! They are pretty cheap as well, I get high strength 2000ug ones from superdrug- about £9 for 96 tablets.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 23/09/2020 15:40

Sorry, 2000IU - 50ug

I've got pukka's mushroom gold to boost my vitamin d - no sunshine to speak of for 3 years here. It's a good warning!

Just a reminder you should take K2 with vitamin D. It prevents excess vit D from calcifying in the blood stream or the wrong places, like the heart (Google it please because I'm paraphrasing from memory).

DianaT1969 · 23/09/2020 15:52

Don't take much notice of the NHS website. They sent out a Twitter message early in lockdown saying 'nobody needs to take vitamin D supplements'. I screenshot it.
They didn't consider that many people coming out of a British winter would be deficient. That a loading dose is needed to raise levels to normal. The dose on the NHS website wouldn't touch the sides.

anon444877 · 23/09/2020 15:54

any particular brands of D3 + K2 anyone would recommend?

MadameBlobby · 23/09/2020 15:56

I have been taking them, not sure how many I should be taking though as I’m really fat

DianaT1969 · 23/09/2020 17:51

I use BetterYou brand spray vit D & K2. Currently buy one, get one 1/2 price at H&B.

anon444877 · 23/09/2020 17:56

Thanks!

ChocolateCakesForAll · 23/09/2020 18:09

Thanks op.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 23/09/2020 18:12

Thanks for the reminder about Vitamin K - got a job lot on Amazon. Mg and Ca are also useful co-supplements if your diet is deficient in these.

I've felt really unwell for years, put it down to my fibromyalgia and kidney and liver issues, just accepted it as my lot.

Routine blood tests picked up really low vitamin D and low calcium in March, so I've been taking some daily and the difference is like night and day. I sleep better, I wake up better, I feel less pain, I have more energy and I'm losing loads of weight.

I never realised it had such a big effect, I thought I spent enough time in the sun to deal with it. I now make sure both my teens take it too. Totally worth it.

NHS advice has changed from earlier in lockdown in view of the evidence

Good advice opie.

MrsPerfect12 · 23/09/2020 18:36

@MrsSiba
I have this one
vitaminddrops.com/uk-en/products-all/
Suitable from age 1 it says.

DianaT1969 · 23/09/2020 19:34

I found I was deficient through a private test in May. That's despite spending time in the sun in April and eating foods rich in vitamin D. I took a loading dose for 6 weeks and now a regular dose until I can get retested.

Many women don't realise that vitamin D deficiency inhibits weightloss.

By the way, it was indefensible of the NHS to put out a blanket statement that vitamin D supplements aren't necessary during the pandemic. There had already been research linking a positive outcome with non-deficiency of vitamin from several countries, including India and a trial ongoing in Ireland, when that message went out.
I'd hazard a guess that 40% of the population is deficient. They aren't testing, they aren't interested in getting the deficient general public onto loading doses during a pandemic as winter approaches.

SallySeven · 23/09/2020 19:40

It's odd isn't it.

We seem to have lost the plot as a nation in regard to public health.

baroqueandblue · 23/09/2020 19:45

Thanks OP, following!

midnightstar66 · 23/09/2020 19:47

Thanks for the reminder, I know how important it is but it had totally slipped my mind. My dc have darker Mediterranean skin so even more important for them. Will order tonight!

chobmon · 23/09/2020 20:11

Does anyone know what dose of K2 you'd need to take too, please?

I wish they were always sold together - the supermarket has vitamin D, but no vitamin K. Do they always have to be taken together?

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 23/09/2020 20:15

You must take k2 if taking but d. You don't want calcium going to places it shouldn't. It's dangerous not to take them together.

DianaT1969 · 23/09/2020 20:17

@Chobmon - It is frustrating. There is a spray with both D3 and K2 in Holland and Barrett.

chobmon · 23/09/2020 20:21

Thank you. I would prefer tablets, so I've just ordered some D and K from Amazon, although the dose was higher than I was going to get - 3000iu. That's still ok though, isn't it?

dementedpixie · 23/09/2020 20:25

That's 75ug which is below the maximum recommended which is 100ug or 4000IU

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2020 20:26

I have some 4000IU which sounds strong reading this

And didn’t know about K2

I’ve been outside a lot during summer so haven’t taken them

Wondering if it’s too high
