Take your Vitamin D

It's officially autumn and noticeably darker, with the dew falling with a sickening thud.
One of the key factors in mortality/morbidity with COVID19 is vitamin D deficiency.

Source:

There is considerable information on the NHS website as well as NIH (US).

I have started my 3000 iu megadose 2 weeks ago and I have a bit more energy and my moods are more stable - think I was vit D deficient most of August. At the latitude of the British Isles you only make Vitamin D from April to early September.

So take your Vitamin D.

Can someone post a link to the drops you can put in juice? Are they suitable for children under 3 and adults? TIA

Yorkshiremummyof1 · 23/09/2020 14:16

I have vit d on prescription as I’m highly deficient. Fingers crossed it is helping...

dementedpixie · 23/09/2020 14:18

Supermarket own brand Vit D tablets are fine and I trust them more than pills from amazon or another online source, I've heard too many horror stories about buying OTC pills online 😳
Often on 3 for 2, as well. Winner!

lughnasadh · 23/09/2020 14:19

@dementedpixie are those tablets really tiny?

So many issues in this house with swallowing tablets, ibuprofen and paracetamol size are a non starter.

Travel sickness and antihistamine sized are OK.

How would you say they compare?

Margo34 · 23/09/2020 14:20

What happens if you overdose on Vit D @dementedpixie?

dementedpixie · 23/09/2020 14:22

www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-d/ - this page tells you what can happen if you take too much vitamin d

Rassy · 23/09/2020 14:27

NHS website recommends 10 micro grams of Vitamin D a day

MrsTumbletap · 23/09/2020 14:28

Would a multivitamin that includes vitamin D be sufficient?

dementedpixie · 23/09/2020 14:29

Depends on the amount of vitamin d in them. 10ug is the recommended amount

MrsAvocet · 23/09/2020 14:32

Thanks for the reminder. I was really good at getting everyone in the family to take theirs during full lockdown but over the summer we have been outside a lot and I didn't bother, but you are absolutely right, it needs to be a priority now. Off to take mine right now!

BiBabbles · 23/09/2020 14:37

Margo34 This summarizes the risks if taking a high dose for a long time. Bone loss and low appetite can also be a symptom of being too low as well.

The nurse practitioner who has helped with my severe deficiency recommended ignoring multivitamins, and that 10ug (400IU) is recommended for most and someone with a history of deficiency should take 20-25ug (800-1000IU). If being monitored on an on-going basis for chronic issues, higher doses may be recommended as they'll catch if something goes wrong (last call, I was told I'm pretty much on higher dose supplements for life), I normally take 2000 IUs daily though if I start experiencing symptoms, I can take 5000 IUs for a few weeks to a month at a time.

SpringSunshineandTulips · 23/09/2020 14:40

Thanks. Will look and see what myself and the kids are currently getting in our multivitamins.

Dogsarebetterthanpeople · 23/09/2020 14:43

I used to have 5,000IU ones but I don’t take them as they make me feel off balance and panicky.
Plus I’ve since read vitamin D must always be taken with K2

BambooWhoosh · 23/09/2020 14:47

@GrapeSodas How did you get yours tested by post?

doublehalo · 23/09/2020 14:51

Vitamin D3 is what you need and don't forget to take Vit K2 alongside any D3 supplementation.

GrapeSodas · 23/09/2020 14:59

Since watching that video back in AUgust and doing some other research I've been taking 2000 per day and ds has been taking 1000. He can't swallow tablets so I get gummies from Holland & Barratt for him.

Out of the blue the other day ds told me that since hes been taking it he feels much more healthy and energised (this is a child that was being sent home from school before lockdown for lethargy, shaking etc whod been referred for blood tests and a hospital referral. He's also sleeping better. He's never went out at break or lunchtimes, he spent all his time in the music studios. He's now at college studying music in studios all day so gets little sunlight.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 23/09/2020 15:04

I do spend as much time outside - but that isn't sufficient unless it was all the time and I wear sunscreen/UV clothing, hence I should be taking this the whole year round.
Dietary sources are leafy vegetables, dairy, eggs and unprocessed plant fats but best to take a supplement as well.

I take K2 too.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 23/09/2020 15:13

My boys take 1000 iu each - they are 9 and 11 and take gummy vitamins - I'm looking to see what they are like in a week or so.
