How old is your sofa?

LajesticVantrashell · 20/09/2020 08:27

I hate my sofa.

It’s very light grey cord fabric, dog smells cling to it, it always looks grubby and has a few toddler spill stains. We’ve had it six years and I’m desperate for a new one.

DH thinks it’s wasteful to get rid of a sofa that’s still functional, and says we should be getting at least ten years out of it. We can afford a new one, so cost isn’t an issue.

How long have you had your sofa? And am I wrong to want a new one?

It is not wasteful if you sell it secondhand or freecycle it

daysofpearlyspencer · 20/09/2020 08:33

Mine is nearly 20 but looking for a new one. However, no kids or pets jumping on it. Have always had a throw on it and all covers are washable. My friends with dogs have leather sofas and hardwood floors so no doggy smells and can be wiped down.
You can get sofas at a reasonable price at Ikea that have washable covers. Your cord sofa does sound a bit whiffy!

milienhaus · 20/09/2020 08:33

Can you get a cover for it if you don’t mind the shape?

180 years. About time I got a new one I suppose.

daysofpearlyspencer · 20/09/2020 08:35

Could you get it steamcleaned like you can a carpet?

MissPoldark · 20/09/2020 08:35

18 years. We’ve been on the lookout for a new one but haven’t found anything of the same build quality.

Who's going to want a doggy smelling sofa though?

And wouldn't any other sofa you get smell of dog too?

Glastonbury2020 · 20/09/2020 08:36

Mine is 1 day old! Got it yesterday, the old one was 20 years. 🙂

OohKittens · 20/09/2020 08:36

3 years and the cats have wrecked it, I'm going to get ikea ones with changeable covers next year.

Shmithecat2 · 20/09/2020 08:37

We have recently moved house/country so both our sofas are only a couple of months old, but I think 6 years is plenty old enough to think about replacing. Have you considered getting it professionally cleaned if your DH isn't agreeable to a new one?

PolarBearStrength · 20/09/2020 08:37

A few years? We got it from DH’s work recently as they were getting new ones. It was barely used there and they’ve replaced them with £4000 sofas!! 😱

Our last one was bought secondhand in good condition but only stayed with us a year. I bought it in an emergency when we needed a sofa bed but it was really uncomfortable and I always hated it.

DinosApple · 20/09/2020 08:38

Ours are around 15 years old. A pair of IKEA ektorps.

I think they came with a 10 or 20 year guarantee, and because they were IKEA we could get spare sets of covers for them which have done the children's younger years.

Still look ok, but getting less comfy now so we are going to replace them next year - and they will be relegated to the conservatory when we move.

DH likes good value so I'm not sure we're going to be able to match that again!

Bikinib0tt0m · 20/09/2020 08:38

Mine is 20, it's it been jumped on these last 6 years since having kids (it was my grandmothers before) it's frame it still solid but the cushions are going out of shape. I'm getting a new one in Oct delivered, from DFS (I doubt this one will last 20 years)

pumpkinpie01 · 20/09/2020 08:39

About 9 years old but it desperately needs replacing although dh doesn't think so. There is a woman on our local fb page who sells dfs ones ( presumably ex display but they are all immaculate) for about £350-£500 so I'm keeping my eye out for exactly what I want.

Itwasaquarterpast11 · 20/09/2020 08:39

5 and a bit years. It is an IKEA one with fixed cushions, so you can't turn or plump them at all, so as a result it is starting to look very sad. Plus there are cat scratched bits on the arms.
My problem is there are no sofas I like. Arms too wide, back too low, width too big or not whitening enough. Weird wooden bits, bad legs. I had no idea I was such a picky sofa twat.

bumblebee1987 · 20/09/2020 08:40

25 years Grin We had lovely brand new grey leather ones which we loved, but they lasted 4 years, then became completely useless, so we recently took DH's parents old ones which are immaculate. I really don't think furniture is built like to used to be!

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/09/2020 08:40

Those cord sofas are cheaply made and not built to last so you are not unreasonable to want a new one.
You could have it professionally cleaned to get rid of smells and dirt. I’d strike bargain with husband and say, you will attempt to have it cleaned and failing that, will want a new one but the new sofa MUST be something that can last longer. Either one with removable, washable cover or a leather one that can be wiped off every week.

Itwasaquarterpast11 · 20/09/2020 08:40

Hmm wide enough

BenoneBeauty · 20/09/2020 08:40

13 years

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 20/09/2020 08:42

Kittens, yep, washable covers all the way!
We got ours 15 years ago, second hand, but because of the washable covers, it has survived 4 cats and 10 years of kids, and still looking fresh. What looks set to be final straw, however, is DP gaining a bit if weight, and his 'spot' starting to sag in the springs, giving it a slightly unbalanced appearance.

🤢

Doggy smelling, toddler stained old cord sofa. Who in earth is wanting to buy that Hmm

emptyshelvesagain · 20/09/2020 08:45

Mine is about 6 or 7 but it's a cheap Argos one and it's ready for the skip. It's very broken Grin My issue is fixing a suitable replacement that will both fit though the front door and have a good max weight limit.

AmelieTaylor · 20/09/2020 08:46

Well, I'm not sure. I got them off freecyle when I move in, as a temporary measure, while I was renovating so they were past their prime already. I have had a few life issues & not great health, so the renovation still isn't complete! I've had them 10 years, so I'd say they're 20 years old & one gets heavy use! I'd rather not replace them until the plaster sanding & painting is completed, but the main one may not last that long.

I'm not sure where to buy well built, comfy, sofas from. Friends have bought from scs & dfs but the sofas have lost their support & the fabric has bobbled really quickly.

Harrykanesrightsock · 20/09/2020 08:50

3 weeks old and I love it. Previous one was 12 and still usable but very shabby. DCs are now adults so the years of spoilage have hopefully past so gave gone for a lovely bright velvet.

derxa · 20/09/2020 08:52

33 years old. We just keep getting it recovered
