How old is your sofa?

LajesticVantrashell · 20/09/2020 08:27

I hate my sofa.

It’s very light grey cord fabric, dog smells cling to it, it always looks grubby and has a few toddler spill stains. We’ve had it six years and I’m desperate for a new one.

DH thinks it’s wasteful to get rid of a sofa that’s still functional, and says we should be getting at least ten years out of it. We can afford a new one, so cost isn’t an issue.

How long have you had your sofa? And am I wrong to want a new one?

Mines 60 🤪. Ercol Windsor.

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2020 09:00

Why don’t you have it professionally cleaned? Doesn’t cost much and you may be much happier with it when it’s done.

We have two sofas, one is a couple of years old, in the main living room, but in the second living room or play room we have very old ones about fifteen years, they are still functional and the room is used for gaming really, so we aren’t changing them any time soon.

We've just had a new one. My other DFS was bought about 7 yrs ago but it was our only sofa so got used relentlessly. You probably spend as much time on your sofa as you do your mattress which they recommend you replace every 8 years. It depends on the quality of stuffing, how often it's used etc etc. We've splashed out on a more decent one and you can tell the difference. My old sofa never even felt like it when it was new to begin with!

I can only dream of such a life Grin

Ours is 9 years old. It’s pretty battered from two children and a dog. It’s nubuck leather, which stains easy. It’s gone into holes on one seat. The chaise longue end has become detached. Some stitching is coming away. Desperate for a new one! But until our 3yo gets a bit older, doesn’t jump on it as much or touch it with his greasy hands etc, we’ll put up with it. I’m loathe to a buy a lovely new one if I can’t trust him to look after it yet!

DuesToTheDirt · 20/09/2020 09:11

25 years and no plans to replace, there's nothing wrong with it.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/09/2020 09:12

Ours was a wedding present from DF, in 1986 so nearly 35 years. During that child we've raised a child and had 2 dogs. It doesn't smell - we have it steam cleaned occasionally, the seat and back covers are washable, and so are the seat cushions (only needed to do that a couple of times though).

We're debating whether to replace or reupholster after our current dog (now 14) expires, no point before then in case he gets leaky.

MustBeThin · 20/09/2020 09:15

5 years I think, I have little dogs so the sofas have always had some sort of throw on them that I can just put in the wash. Ive just bought a vax powermax, I'm going to clean the sofas and my rugs. Grin

daisypond · 20/09/2020 09:16

Over 25 years. It wasn’t expensive in the first place. I’ve recovered it twice, which is easy to do.

ssd · 20/09/2020 09:17

I'd live a new soda but can't afford it. Mines about 13 years old. I think.

Plussizejumpsuit · 20/09/2020 09:19

9 or 10 years from ikea. Of you can afford it and you don't just chuck the old one in the tip it's ok. Community furniture schemes can be fussy (which is great as it shows they're getting good stuff) but a good option as they will collect. Free cycle or gumtree also good options.

SoftMick · 20/09/2020 09:19

Ours are from Sofa Workshop and are about 14 years old, they’re patched and sagging but still pretty comfy.

EmmaStone · 20/09/2020 09:19

Nearly 13 years old, Sofa Workshop. The frame is still great, as are the cushions, but the fabric is very worn. Looked to have them recovered and it wouldn't have cost much less to just replace with new ☹️. Seems quite wasteful, so for now we're doing nothing, but I think we'll probably replace in the next year (we moved house last year, so it would also be nice to get something that fits the room a bit better - it's just been redecorated, and I'm looking at replacing the curtains, so with a new sofa, that room will be 'done').

whirlwindwallaby · 20/09/2020 09:20

10 years old, I've had them three. I expect them to last for years yet. Can't you just take the cushion covers off and wash them?

Timeandtune · 20/09/2020 09:21

20+ years here. From John Lewis. They still look fine and are as comfy as ever.

JoanJosephJim · 20/09/2020 09:21

I think if the bones of it are still good why don't you have it professionally cleaned?

I just worked out that in 23 years we have had 6 sofas, the first one being a second hand one from PIL that I instantly recovered. Since then house moves have dictated sofas to be able to fit.

Our latest one is 4 years old because I have just finished paying for it Grin. We have another set of recliner sofas, this time the children's sofa is a recliner too and electric as Ds2 was unable to use his leg weight to put the manual recliner back.

I don't think 6 years is a ridiculously short time to have a sofa. Lots of sofas come with 4 or 5 year plans for repayment. We have had cheap Ikea sofas in the past and they have lasted a long time, we had Ektorp in the children's playroom that took a lot of abuse.

whirlwindwallaby · 20/09/2020 09:22

If it smells like dog and you still have the dog I'd definitely keep it, it will be hard to pass it on to someone else and the new one will just smell the same!

midsomermurderess · 20/09/2020 09:22

Just over 4 years. Arrived around the time of the benighted referendum. It's from Loaf and just isn't comfortable. The original seat cushions were feather and after about 5 minutes you were basically sitting on the bones of your arse. I replaced them with foam ones so that's better but still a bad buy. I got taken in by their good marketing. It's all style over substance. I am seriously looking to replace it, but ine bad buy rattles you're nerve.

bluechameleon · 20/09/2020 09:24

About 9 years? It's an Ikea Ektorp and we got new covers when we moved house 5 year ago.

LouisBalfour · 20/09/2020 09:24

Our sofas are 3 years old.

We replace them around the 5 year mark as I get easily bored. Apart from one pair that I sold, all our old sofas are still going strong with various family members.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 20/09/2020 09:24

5 years - leather. Super comfy but not wearing well visually. If only I'd kept to my rule of not eating on it....
Probably won't get replaced for a while yet.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 20/09/2020 09:26

8 years, leather. Going strong (ok base a bit saggy from toddler-bouncing but still comfy.) Might replace next year or the year after, just because we bought as a couple in a small flat and are now a family of 4 and need more arse room.

Lolaloveslemons · 20/09/2020 09:28

3 years for 2 sofas and 4 months for 1

Before that 25 years. I loved that sofa!
Had it re-covered twice.
Current ones are nowhere near as good.

Stanislas · 20/09/2020 09:29

30years ago from Delcor in Northumberland. Just had them( two sofas , armchair and sofa table) recovered. The frames have a 50 year guarantee. They have gorgeous materials. Hoping they will see me outGrin

JellyfishandShells · 20/09/2020 09:29

15 years - still look and feel quite new and colour held brilliantly through cleaning. The late, lamented Multi York - expensive at the time but interest free credit ! No dogs , children were past damage risk at time and use washable, soft throws on seat.
