How old is your sofa?

LajesticVantrashell · 20/09/2020 08:27

I hate my sofa.

It’s very light grey cord fabric, dog smells cling to it, it always looks grubby and has a few toddler spill stains. We’ve had it six years and I’m desperate for a new one.

DH thinks it’s wasteful to get rid of a sofa that’s still functional, and says we should be getting at least ten years out of it. We can afford a new one, so cost isn’t an issue.

How long have you had your sofa? And am I wrong to want a new one?

14 years and its needed replacing for years, finally getting a new one in a couple of weeks Smile

fitflopqueen · 20/09/2020 09:34

Current sofas are about 13/14 yrs old, Duresta so they will last forever, DH wants a change (he chose them!). I have said no as they cost too much. Last sofa and armchairs we had for about 16 yrs prior to current ones, sold on eBay For £200 and the buyer resold for double.

TSSDNCOP · 20/09/2020 09:36

2 sofas are 20 years old from Laura Ashley
1 sofa is 26 years old from Ikea
1 sofa is 19 years old from the Reject Shop

4 years old, mines a light grey cord style too I love it it's so comfy. 5 kids a dog and a cat. I take the covers off once a month and wash it all. Why can't you do the same op?

ifiwasascent · 20/09/2020 09:40

About 4 years. I hated it when we got it and I hate it now. It's grey and dull and small. We've just brought our first house and 2 loaf sofas which are being delivered in 2 weeks and I can't wait. No grey or beige to be seen and they're big and squishy. If you can afford it I don't see what the problem is your husband IBU

passthemustard · 20/09/2020 09:41

The sofa on my lounge is 1 year old. The sofas in the family room are 1 year old. Before we moved we had a sofa which was about 5 years old but my DH chopped it up from 2 separate sofas into a corner sofa. I chucked it. Before that we only had hand me downs from friends and family. We even passed these on and some are still going in various friends houses!

InsomniaGreat · 20/09/2020 09:41

I've had it for 9 years but it was my grandma's before that so its 45 years old.

Its still going strong and makes me feel safe because it stil makes feel like I'm at grandma's house.

Its ugly as hell but I'm not ready to change it yet!

Babdoc · 20/09/2020 09:42

20 years, with washable removable covers. Got it cheap off the internet from a small company in South Wales - their driver brought it 500 miles to Scotland overnight, free delivery. It’s survived two DC and a succession of cats, and is still fine!

notheragain4 · 20/09/2020 09:44

Ours is 3 years old but we've just ordered new as it didn't suit our new house, it's wasteful financially but I will ensure it's sold or given away so it's not going to landfill or anything, hoping to keep our next one much longer!

Valkadin · 20/09/2020 09:49

14 years , we had it made to measure and it’s still absolutely lovely.

InFiveMins · 20/09/2020 09:56

Mine is 5 years old, good quality, I'm gifting it to a friend as moving house and wanting something different. I couldn't imagine keeping a sofa for 10 years or more - my tastes change too often!

EasternDailyStress · 20/09/2020 10:05

18 years. One leather recliner, which is worn in places but so comfy. The other is fabric, but doesn't see as much use, so still fine.

CherryPavlova · 20/09/2020 10:08

Various. In winter sitting room they’re about twelve years old, but have been recovered and had new cushions.
In summer sitting room one is about five years they other about a year.
The one in the shepherds hut is about five years too.

NoSquirrels · 20/09/2020 10:22

I had no idea I was such a picky sofa twat.
Grin I feel like this. Ours is 15 years old, and W as practically the only new bit of expensive furniture we’ve ever bought apart from bed & mattress (IKEA bookcases and flat pack don’t count!) It’s been so great but the washable covers are now getting threadbare in places (thanks, cats) and yet I don’t want to get rid of it entirely as it’s so comfortable for stretching out on.

Nacreous · 20/09/2020 10:26

My sofas are over 30, they were 27 when I got them. I need to take the covers off and wash them but it's such a faff that I put it off for ages.

My parents sofas are I think about 30, 25 and 20 but the 30 year old one has been relegated to the conservatory.

Crystal87 · 20/09/2020 10:41

About 3 years, bought 2nd hand from someone who had it 6 months. Still looks ok and is comfy but it sags down where the springs have gone where the kids jump on it.

Lozz22 · 20/09/2020 10:42

Dunno it was £30 from the charity shop. Looked pretty good compared to all the others and the leather and wood looked to be in good nick. Gave it a wipe over with antibacterial spray when it arrived and it's as good as new, one of the reasons I went for leather so I new I could wipe it down straight away and use it. To be honest I don't think it was hardly used because when I first sat on it. The seats were rock hard but over time they've softened and become more comfortable. If I could afford a new one I would like a material one because mine isn't the sort you can snuggle up comfortable on and read a book or watch tv. That said however it was a godsend during my miscarriage last year because I felt more at ease sitting on that then my material covered chair. Although in the end it ended up being the material covered chair that took the brunt of it anyway because I was sat next to the heater trying to get warm.

Marmite27 · 20/09/2020 10:44

10 years. We bought it brand new when we moved in. It could do with a clean after 5 years of kids. But is still functional and not an out of date style.

We bought a plain dark grey boxy style. Not massively stylish, but bought to last several years.

Sexnotgender · 20/09/2020 10:44

It belonged to my parents so probably about 20 years old. It’s leather and good quality though, absolutely nothing wrong with it.

crimsonlake · 20/09/2020 10:45

At least 14 years old.
In fact it is when they become old and squishy that I really like them. Also I always tend to go for fabric ones, similar to some type of cord which wears well and I think the look improves with age.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/09/2020 10:45

9 years and no plans to replace it any time soon as it's in good condition and cost a lot. My previous one was 10 years old when I replaced it. It still looked looked new but didn't work in our new house.

DeliasDinner · 20/09/2020 10:45

One's 22 (is MultiYork and structurally as good as the day I bought it, but needs new covers). The others are about 10 years and need replacing as the springs on both of them have given up (M & S).

LadyB49 · 20/09/2020 11:35

12 years, Brown leather and still in great condition. One sofa and two recliners. Had survived 3 local dgc bouncing energetically. No shoes allowed. The odd minor scratch which we call character. A little dated in style but can live with it. Would only replace if doing so with similar quality.

BitGutted · 20/09/2020 22:46

Mine are 10 years old Duresta ones. I have them professionally cleaned once a year they still look like new
Expensive but worthwhile

I have a DFS corner unit in the family room tho only 3 years old we have it cleaned at the same time and we can tell it's a cheap rubbish one wish we'd got another better quality one really but this one was a bargain it seemed a good idea at the time 🤦🏻‍♀️

Kittykatmacbill · 20/09/2020 23:47

No plans to replace any of them:

  • living room -18 years had recovered in felt 13 years ago, it’s a 1960s danish one.
  • dining room / playroom - 3 years it’s leather danish vintage one but probably early 1990s.
  • study - second hand muji thing I guess 10 years
  • formally guest room now my working from home space - a futon shop one we bought new! Probably the first one to go as when the DDs no longer want to share, this room will become one of their rooms.
