How old is your sofa?

LajesticVantrashell · 20/09/2020 08:27

I hate my sofa.

It’s very light grey cord fabric, dog smells cling to it, it always looks grubby and has a few toddler spill stains. We’ve had it six years and I’m desperate for a new one.

DH thinks it’s wasteful to get rid of a sofa that’s still functional, and says we should be getting at least ten years out of it. We can afford a new one, so cost isn’t an issue.

How long have you had your sofa? And am I wrong to want a new one?

I’m not sure..., maybe around 9 years.

Definitely get them steam cleaned!!! It makes such a difference.

Ilovesausages · 21/09/2020 00:52

Mind you if you hate yours, and you can afford a new one, just clean it up a bit and pass it on to someone who needs one!

We have one 2 seater that we bought 16 years ago. It was part of a set but the 3 seater was completely recked so we've just got rid of it a few weeks ago.
They were £700 from home base, cream leather so need regular wipe downs but so comfortable and much better quality than the newer ones my parents got us 4 years ago which were double the price but not built as strong.

@DinosApple Comfort Works is great for nicer replacement covers for IKEA sofas. I only just discovered them and I'm very excited to have more choices.

I know you said you're are now uncomfortable but thought I'd let you know just incase.

ritzbiscuits · 21/09/2020 08:53

7 years old and has plenty of life left in it. We'll keep it at least another 3-5 years before getting another one.

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 21/09/2020 08:58

One is 13 years old and one is about 18 years old. Desperate for new one/s but can't afford it.

Ragwort · 21/09/2020 09:01

Twenty years - bought fairly cheap from MFI (remember them? Grin) when we had our DS as we didn't want to invest in expensive furniture whilst he was young ... he is 19 now and the sofas are still doing fine, cream coloured covers which can be easily washed ... no reason to change them.

I have two ancient leather chesterfields in one room, one is circa 1960s and the other is circa 1900 and a comfortable wreck.
In my “parlour” I have a period horsehair sofa and two armchairs, which have been recovered. I don't know how old they are, but they were in the family when I was a child, so at least 60 years old.
They get professionally cleaned every so often.

Yerroblemom1923 · 21/09/2020 09:25

11 years. IKEA ektorp. Washable covers. Have only this year replaced them with a spare set of covers. Once kids leave for uni we'll treat ourselves to a new one maybe, although there really is nothing wrong with it or the matching comfy chairs. I love the covers as means you can instantly change the look for a fraction of the price of a new sofa and chairs.

Yerroblemom1923 · 21/09/2020 09:27

(I should point out I wash the covers more often than every 11 years - about twice a year- it's only this year we've put a brand new cover on it)

Flaunch · 21/09/2020 09:28

I’ve got 3 Blush 4, 4 and 1. We had the previous one for 10 years and the one before that for 6.

movingonup20 · 21/09/2020 09:34

9 months old

BriocheForBreakfast · 21/09/2020 10:15

Our two living room sofas are 19 years and the one in the dining area is 4. The older ones could do with either being recovered (as they're structurally sound) or replaced. I'd like a different colour next time.

notso · 21/09/2020 10:26

Three are 14 months old, two are 10 months old. We bought them all when we moved to a bigger house.
The previous two from our old house were 13 years and although the leather was good condition the seats were very saggy.

MsEllany · 21/09/2020 10:54

Nearly three months old.

We replaced ours, had them almost ten years. This wasn’t an arbitrary number we attached to them - they’d started to get uncomfortable and we wanted to redecorate.

I gave them away on Facebook marketplace.

Minai · 21/09/2020 10:57

Can you take the covers off? Mine says it’s not washable but every 6 months or so I take all the cushion covers off and wash them at 30 degrees and they are fine. I have 2 toddlers and it can get very grubby from daily wear and tear. It’s 5 years old now and when I wash the covers it looks great for about 10 minutes

Legoandloldolls · 21/09/2020 10:58

My last one was between 12-20 years I think. 4 kids trashed it. I got a really nice second hand leather suit that I can wipe down for £150 on Ebay.

So with that bargain in mind, I dont think I would buy a new one again. There are some real bargains second hand if you can hire a van / man and van

Crunchymum · 21/09/2020 11:01

Ours is almost 13 years old.

Has seen 3 kids and a cat, and is still generally OK!

Bluesheep8 · 21/09/2020 11:13

4 years old.

vanillandhoney · 21/09/2020 12:05

Nine months.

But the one before that? No idea. It was at least third-hand when we got it - maybe 20 years old?

FudgeBrownie2019 · 21/09/2020 12:08

One week old! The ones that left the house last week went to my friend and they're 14 years old, so hoping to get 14 years out of these new ones.

I'm still at the "get your feet off the new sofa" stage. Give it a month and they'll look like they've been here for a lifetime.

RuthW · 21/09/2020 12:20

Mine is 20 years old. Perfect condition. Leather, but had the seats only recovered 2 years ago. Was a cheapy from Argos.

Funnyface1 · 21/09/2020 12:43

About 4.5 years now. They are leather and still like new. I expect to get a good few years out of them yet. Definitely worth getting good quality.

NerrSnerr · 21/09/2020 16:54

We've had ours 10 years and that was my dad's old one. It's probably about 30 years old now.
