We've caught a mouse... It's adorable

We have finally caught the elusive mouse we've had in our kitchen. He's currently snacking away on a peanut in the humane tunnel trap we have.
What would be the best way and time to release him?
Or are we allowed to keep him?... Only half joking.

Picture?

You can't keep if he's an indoor mouse - what if he has a family Grin

Beebityboo · 20/09/2020 08:04

Oh no Laurie I didn't consider he might have a family!
Oh this is going to break my heart.

It is so sweet that you think you only have one mouse...

ChilliBeanSauce · 20/09/2020 08:07

For every caught mouse there are 10 little mice hidden away .. but I agree, we had "one" and he was lovely ..

Shouldbedoing · 20/09/2020 08:10

Mice are incontinent. They just poo and wee as they go about. You might spot the poos in your food cupboard but the wees dry up and you wouldn't know your food had mouse wee on it.

Beebityboo · 20/09/2020 08:10

I don't want to just set him free outside, he's so little Sad

Consider that he's more rampant than Boris and how cute is he now? This mouse has "at least" 60 children.

redlockscelt · 20/09/2020 08:13

You will have lots. When you catch them you need to release them a couple of miles away.

Pipandmum · 20/09/2020 08:13

Ha yes that mouse has lots of relatives. We had an infestation last year and I got an exterminator in. He says they tend to be outside during the day and come in at night (I could hear them scampering around the loft). They travel down wherever you have pipes as the holes around them are big enough.
Just think of all the mouse urine all over your kitchen surfaces and wherever else they've been. Yuck. Release this guy miles away and then reset your trap - but ours were quite clever and managed to nab the food without tripping it, hence the exterminator (also my daughter saw one in the bathroom late one night).

Beebityboo · 20/09/2020 08:15

OK I'll release him. We rent so will need to call the landlord I guess. Can't release him too far away as we don't drive.
I'll miss him, I've enjoyed our Sunday morning together Grin

It will starve to death if you release it, mice don't survive away from their area. The kindest thing to do would be to kill it.

I'm sure he will find food if he's an adult.

We've humanely trapped 10 mice in the last couple of weeks - my OP takes them to an abandoned cottage about 1km away with a supply of food and a water container #softy

Bikinib0tt0m · 20/09/2020 08:20

Sorry to say but there is never just one mouse. I was the same after catching my first 'cute' I released it. If you release it you have to release it far from your house a couple of miles, as they can find their way back. But then came more so if you go down the humane route be prepared to make lots of trips releasing them. I started doing this, but it was just getting to much in the end I just got decent traps and killed a number in a couple of weeks and blocked up where I think they could be getting in with wire wool and sealant. I haven't had any for a good few months.

Beagledbybeagle · 20/09/2020 08:20

Release it with a lovely picnic.

Beebityboo · 20/09/2020 08:22

We don't drive so am going to release him in to a field near our house. I couldn't kill it, my mental health is not remotely up to that right now!
If we catch/see another I'll call the LL.

Hope he had a nice walk back to your place 😂

BamboozledandBefuddled · 20/09/2020 08:23

We had a mouse a couple of years ago. I did the same as you, thought he was very sweet, carefully drove him to a small park in the early hours of the morning and wished him luck as I set him free.

About a week later I went to get a new ball of wool from my (extensive) stash. The spiteful, malicious, sodding bastard had trashed over £100 worth of wool Sad I sincerely hope he died slowly and painfully. If I were you OP, I'd check the contents of every cupboard, drawer and container in the house before deciding what you think of him!

Beebityboo · 20/09/2020 08:24

I'm going to make him a little hamper to give him a fighting chance Blush.

Bikinib0tt0m · 20/09/2020 08:32

If you can't deal with it maybe get pest control in. A house mouse can't survive outside and unless it makes it back safely it will be eaten most likely.

bowchicawowwow · 20/09/2020 08:34

He will probably be back home (to his wife and family) before you are Grin

BanalAnal · 20/09/2020 08:35

He's probably got a family like the Radfords.

SionnachGlic · 20/09/2020 08:36

😂 I like this post...the dilemma of it all!
I have a snail, he came in to potting shed on a trowel & was only the size of a pencil tip. I cdn't put him back out as we have nesting birds close by & I thought he'd be eaten quickly. My kids tell me I have broken up a family & he is feeling lost & alone. He is quite a bit bigger now & probably better able to survive...but now it is getting cold & he is not used to the 'wild'! I think he may have found his forever home.... in a lunchbox with earth, branches & grass plus his water, cabbage, carrott & ground eggshells!) with a microwave spatter protector (with holes) keeping him within & safe

I don’t have my glasses on - I read that as you were going to make him a little jumper 😆
