We've caught a mouse... It's adorable

We have finally caught the elusive mouse we've had in our kitchen. He's currently snacking away on a peanut in the humane tunnel trap we have.
What would be the best way and time to release him?
Or are we allowed to keep him?... Only half joking.

Yeah - that PETA link. Says mice and rats are fastidiously clean because they keep themselves clean. No mention of the fact that they relieve themselves EVERYWHERE, ALL the time.. how clean their little whiskers are is utterly irrelevant to the trail of wee and poo over the kitchen counter and in the bag of rice they've chewed into.

House mouse/s (mice?) can live outdoors. I have them living in the dry stone wall in my front garden. Lots of shelter, near the bird feeders, they live like kings. As long as the cats don't get them.
You need to try and figure out where the mice are getting in and block it up. Check where the kitchen sink waste pipe leaves the house for example. They only need a tiny gap.
Check any boxes of cereal/packets of flour for nibbles. Tell tall sign of where mousey has been will be little mouse poos.

Still waiting for cute mouse picture...

cricketmum84 · 20/09/2020 10:06

We had the same last year. Ended up catching about 8 all in all in our garage with the humane tunnel trap. I let them all go in a field a couple of miles away with a handful of nuts each time.

They were very cute. I'll admit I was tempted to get the old hamster cage out and keep one!

SlopesOff · 20/09/2020 10:09

You could make him a little village in the garden, like this:

Ah! That is awesome😲

NanooCov · 20/09/2020 10:12

We had a few earlier in the summer. Took them about 5 miles away for release. They are super cute. But I don't want to be eating mouse wee.

Strugglingtodomybest
Ah OP, they are really cute aren't they? But yeah, we started with the humane trap and then DH resorted to drowning them otherwise they just came back

Really? that’s disgusting 😡

Eve · 20/09/2020 10:18

@Beebityboo

We don't drive so am going to release him in to a field near our house. I couldn't kill it, my mental health is not remotely up to that right now! If we catch/see another I'll call the LL.
In most tenancy agreements vermin are tenants issue to fix.

When we moved to a farm, dcat left us a half dead mouse at the door. Quick as a flash, dh had set up MIU (mouse intensivecare unit) from an old snake heat pad and cage. He gathered a selection of tasty snacks and a ramekin of water. Warm blanket also. Checked on it regularly through the night.
Obviously poor half eaten thing died and dh was gutted.
Not as gutted as the dmouse already was mind.
Dcats brought a mouse each regularly for a year.
Then we moved and more mice just a different squeak accent!!

catnoir1 · 20/09/2020 10:45

There will be loads op. That's the mouse looking for food. His family are also hungry we caught 15 one night. Traps went constantly. Had to get pest control in. I suggest you do the same.

Bulblasagne · 20/09/2020 11:26

Op, why no picture!

The earlier pic from pp looks more like a baby rat 🐀

CoronaIsWatching · 20/09/2020 11:28

I can hear some running around in the attic, I don't mind as I think they eat spiders?

I would prefer a load of mice in the house to a load of spiders

Beebityboo · 20/09/2020 11:32

Picture of Sir Nibbles. I have sent him on his way with a packed lunch. May or may not have cried a little bit. I'm a bit fragile at the moment BlushGrin

teenmumandsowhat · 20/09/2020 11:39

As a child we lived in a bungalow with wooden floors and would often get mice, half the time brought in by the cat! By the time i had left home every single knot hole in the floorboards etc had either tape or a shoe wedged over it.
It was a normal occurrence to hear my mum&dad screaming and banging in the morning trying to catch a mouse in their bedroom. And on more than one occasion I found one in my room, usually half dead from fear. I used to feel sorry for them and feed them gerbil food Grin

SBTLove · 20/09/2020 11:46

is that what they told you 🤣🤣

Crystal87 · 20/09/2020 12:03

That's a rat. Cute but it's vermin.

MJMG2015 · 20/09/2020 12:12

@Beebityboo. I'm every bit as soft & would have been upset too!

He is very cute. You did well to set him free with a nice packed lunch! I misread your earlier post as 'jumper' too and figured you must be a quicker knitter than me or there was no way he was going today 🤣

Maybe start putting a tiny drop of food colouring on their lower back so you can tell if any of them are returners! (I presume you've refilled the trap?!).

teenmumandsowhat · 20/09/2020 12:12

@SBTLove Grin it was definitely mouse catching.
After the “mole incident” I never heard them doing THAT until they replaced their mattress

Mole incident- mum insisted on airing beds before we went on holiday. We returned a week later to find the rotten bloody remains of most of a mole in the middle of their bed. 🤢 again a gift from the cat!

giggly · 20/09/2020 12:13

Weekly occurrence in my house as cats like to bring me a wee present. Don’t mind so much during the day when I see them and can catch them but when I smell the boaking smell of decomposing mouse .

pimble · 20/09/2020 12:13

Releasing them humanely doesn't work it needs despatching. They carry salmonella and are incontinent Envy (not envy)

twilightcafe · 20/09/2020 12:20

Mice are vermin. I don't care how cute they look. They spread diseases. And I'm terrified of them.
