OH has fell down the stairs

Just moved into our new house today and OH has just gone and fell down the stairs the ambulance has just taken him to hospital.

I've got a job interview tomorrow and everything is still in boxes.

How bad are broken ankles will he still be able to look after the kids while I go?

My dad had to have an ambulance with painful swollen knees

Not as odd as an ambulance for a broken ankle

I don't understand this comment.
It's an emergency - that's what ambulances are for.

SeaToSki · 19/09/2020 00:43

Are the kids happy to watch tv for a couple of hours or will they swing on a chandelier and jump down the stairs if not watched for 10 mins. Your DH is going to be in bed in agony if he is lucky (if he is unlucky he will still be in hospital waiting for it to be reset by a surgeon). Technically he could be an adult in the house with them, if the interview is for 90 mins max and your tv/devices are plugged in and ready to go.
If I were you, I would be calling parents/in laws/aunties to help out for an hour. Even unpacking the house with two dc that age and a DH on crutches is going to be a handful. Do you have a downstairs loo?

How helpful to tell a woman whose spouse was just carried away via ambulance @HerNameWasEliza

Couchbettato · 19/09/2020 00:54

My son 18month would easily be placated by Peppa pig all day if I left my husband with easily accessible snacks until my interview/job trial was over, so I think it really depends.

In these situations I think "how would they cope it they were a single parent"? And it's hard but single parents aren't immune to injury and they have to manage.

All in all I think it depends on your kids, like I said my son will sit all day watching Peppa, or will play in a childproof room on his own without expecting me to engage, but not all kids are like that. If your children are high energy and very dependent usually I think it would be sensible to find other arrangements but if not, just make sure your husband has food/water on hand and your living space is childproof.

Op with kids so young I'd call a friend / granny for help.
If they were school aged (self sufficient for toilet & drinks) it would have been fine.

anorangeaday · 19/09/2020 00:58

Could no one else have the Dc?

Prettybluepigeons · 19/09/2020 01:04

I was taken to hospital by ambulance when I broke my ankle and kept in fir a week and had to have beans and bed baths! It was a severe brak and could have been really serious. Took months to recover.

AugieMarch · 19/09/2020 01:04

He may be able to manage if the tv or an iPad are available and there’s a stair gate set up to stop the kids repeating his mistake. If it’s a simple fracture he’ll be on crutches but you should be able to set them up somewhere if you can make it safe with the boxes etc.

Totally ridiculous of the previous poster to suggest an ambulance isn’t appropriate! I recently fell down the stairs and sustained a different injury and had to call an ambulance. Mine didn’t affect a leg but I still couldn’t walk (was stuck on the stairs) and an ambulance was deemed appropriate for me too. With a fall there is always a risk of other undetected injuries and if a grown man can’t walk how else can he get to hospital?

Bedpans

AcrossthePond55 · 19/09/2020 01:07

I've had a broken ankle (tri-malleolar fracture) from a simple slip and fall. I was totally non-weight bearing for close to 3 months but it was a serious break. There would have been no way I could have cared for a 2 and 3 year old. No possible way.

I'd assume that even if it's just a serious sprain to both ankles your DH isn't going to be up to chasing two toddlers around.

SorryImKnew · 19/09/2020 01:07

He'll be in a lot of pain and probably advised to elevate the leg for now. You need someone else to look after the kids - even a teenager would do.

LockedInMadness · 19/09/2020 01:13

Not as odd as an ambulance for a broken ankle

Totally agree. Fair enough if he couldn't walk on both legs but for just one potentially broken ankle he didn't need an ambulance, ever heard of a taxi? No wonder people are dying waiting for ambulances if they're taken up with minor things like this.
When I broke my foot in several places I hopped on the other one until I got to the hospital fgs.

Itisbetter · 19/09/2020 01:16

I could look after two kids with one broken ankle. Set up a room with tv snacks nappies etc and get on with it.

Hopping to the hospital. The level of martyrdom on MN has reached an all time high.

nocoolnamesleft · 19/09/2020 01:19

Hope you've got a downstairs loo...

c75kp0r · 19/09/2020 01:21

I kept struggling in to work with a really bad infection and by the time I did go to the doctor I was so ill they needed to send me to hospital as my heart beat and blood pressure readings were so bad. I now recognise that letting it get that bad was a bit unnecessary

I suspect hopping to hospital may fall in the same category - I might have done the same thing, but frankly it's a bit daft

giantangryrooster · 19/09/2020 01:24

Just asking as a foreigner, given the outrage of the use of ambulances on MN, do you only have one for the whole of Britain?

Actually I've done this but I have brittle bones disease, I also have a rule that if it's not agony I don't go to a&e until day three bit thats mainly because a&e is SO boring.Grin

Susannahmoody · 19/09/2020 01:26

Any news on DH, op?

In order to understand this as a foreigner you have to watch this...

Competitive misery is a British cultural trait.

giantangryrooster · 19/09/2020 01:33

Thanks you @MrsTerryPratchett, laugh of the night 🤣, so I guess you only have half an ambulance on Tuesdays and Wednesdays... If you are lucky 😂.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/09/2020 01:34

Half an ambulance? You'd be lucky. We get a paramedic on a bike once every 6 months.
