Chicken Kiev. What vegetables?

I have a nice one of these for tomorrow's dinner but don't know which vegetables to have too. I already have Parmentier potatoes; I'm not keen on green beans or garden peas. What would you go for ? Ta.

Braised leeks and peas.

whoknows1230 · 17/09/2020 21:57

Adding to the carb-overload, I once read on here about sitting the kiev on a slice of bread to cook. It turns the bread into garlic toast!

BusterTheBulldog · 17/09/2020 21:58

I really like the fact you call them CKs op, I’m also going to start to do this. Despite eating dinner I could murder a CK now!

@SandrasAnnoyingFriend

Cook your Kiev on top of a slice of bread It will absorb the errant garlic butter and give you a lovely slice of garlic bread to have as a side.
This is genius!
occa · 17/09/2020 21:59

Peas or broccoli. Salad sometimes. Never a carb.

ineedaholidaynow · 17/09/2020 22:01

If I am pretending that CK are healthy we have them with new potatoes instead of chips and pour the leaked butter over the new potatoes

Clevs · 17/09/2020 22:09

I've never had veg with chicken Kiev. Usually chips but salad in the summer.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 17/09/2020 22:17

@ZarasHouse

I put mine in a China or glass dish, not in a baking tray, so that any butter seepage can be tipped over the Kiev once decanted. I am not letting that butter get away... it's the best bit
Me too. Although I'm going to try the cooking on bread thing next time
WildRosie · 17/09/2020 22:23

1001 ways to serve chicken kievs. Who'd have thunk it ? Don't forget the wine, mind. A mildly-oaked Chardonnay will complement but not compete with the garlic fumes.

I'm feeling the lack of CK right now, I would have had them for breakfast if I had any. But no. Sad I have a feeling chicken goujons and garlic bread might fill that void... I will let you know

Scarby9 · 18/09/2020 09:21

Only ever had it in one local pub where it was always served with chips and 'garden peas' (ie. frozen) and a salad garnish.
So that's how it must be served!
I can't think how many years it is since I last had it. Really need to have it again now...

WildRosie · 18/09/2020 11:40

For those of you contemplating a return to CK country, it is worth spending a little more to get a quality product. The Morrison's ones are about £3.50 for two and are very generous with the garlic and butter. The Booth's ones are about four quid but I only buy them when they are in the reduced section. I try to avoid paying full price!

I'm having button chestnut mushrooms with tonight's CK and Parmentier spuds. No salad, broccoli or carrots.

Pasta, tomato pasta sauce, and peas with mine please, and lots of grated cheese.

ShockEnvy

Pasta with tomato pasta sauce as a side dish to CK is just bizarre!

ZarasHouse · 18/09/2020 18:53

@MotherofPearl

It's hot a side dish, it's a layer of pasta (preferably spaghetti) mixed with tomato pasta sauce and peas, with a chicken Kiev on top, and then lots of grated cheese on top of the Kiev. It's basically a totally bastardised chicken Milanese with spaghetti.

ZarasHouse · 18/09/2020 18:53

Not* a side dish. Hopefully it would be hot

ZarasHouse · 18/09/2020 18:54

The garlic butter has to go all over the pasta though that's the point. It's nice without the pasta sauce too

TheChosenTwo · 18/09/2020 18:58

I’ve just made these for the dc, they have got sweet potato wedges, rainbow chard and peas! A random mishmash but my next oddbox is coming tomorrow so I was using up the leftovers from last weeks one.

MsEllany · 18/09/2020 19:00

I've just eaten but now I want Kiev. Remember those little frozen ones? We used to have them as a quick tea when I was a kid.

I'd have mine with rice and broccoli, or maybe these baby kale things that I got from Aldi once and surprisingly really liked.

MotherofPearl · 18/09/2020 19:12

I don't know if that's better or worse! Though maybe I'm lacking imagination here. After all, I do like all of those elements on their own... Smile

ZarasHouse · 18/09/2020 19:14

@MotherofPearl

Spaghetti Pomodora and Chicken Milanese or Schitzel with noodles are not too far off, and both real things.

I'm probably a bit too far the other way and am quite experimental in the kitchen.

WildRosie · 18/09/2020 19:22

I remember Bernard Matthews mini kievs. You needed most of one bag to make a decent meal for one but they were rather good.

I've never eaten Chicken Kiev but DH and the kids have theirs with crispy potatoes, and peas or green beans.

gnomeisland · 18/09/2020 19:25

Big soft lettuce leaves and some garden peas.

ZarasHouse · 18/09/2020 21:09

@WildRosie

I think I might have some in the freezer Blush they are not past tense!
