Optimum Chip Butty Composition

DP and I have just consumed an obscene amount of carbohydrates while discussing optimum chippy butty composition.

I had thick cut chips, olive oil spread (I know but am vegan and hate butter anyway) salt and BBQ sauce on one slice.

DP went for the altogether more Australian-style wedges, sour cream and sweet chilli.

Bread was soft white sliced bakery bread without a crunchy crust.

Pretty good! There's a definite carb synergy with chip butties where you get disproportionately full up but I still managed two.

If availability isn't a factor, what goes on yours? In an ideal world I feel like I'd have gone for a big fluffy roll.

I want a chip butty now!!

My dream butty would be soft, fluffy, thickly sliced, fresh white bread spread thinly with real butter. Chips MUST be freshly cooked from the chip shop or home made-deep fried with lots of salt and a little vinegar. Half the sandwich should be smothered in tartar sauce, the other half in tomato ketchup (so I can switch between the 2 when I like). There should be enough chips to spill out of the sides and extra sauces on the side for dipping.

Chip shop chips with salt and vinegar
Salted butter
Plastic bread ideally Warburton’s blue
Ketchup to dip

Perfick

mylittleyumyum · 17/09/2020 12:35

chewy roll, loads of butter, chip shop chips (not too many) and loads of salt and vinegar

Dollywilde · 17/09/2020 12:36

I’m with @squeekyclean on the half tartare half ketchup saucing plan - lovely. Personally I think a bap (cob, barm, whatever your geographical persuasion) is superior to sliced bread but I’d take your arm off for one either way.

Soft white roll, chip shop chips pre-soaked in salt and a ton of vinegar and tomato ketchup. And now I want a chip butty...Grin

tryingtocatchthewind · 17/09/2020 12:39

Oh lord a chip butty yum!

A huge white bread soft bread bun, butter, no sauce nonsense, chip shop chips with loads of salt and vinegar.

Bloody lovely

AdaColeman · 17/09/2020 12:40

Hot home made double cooked chips, (King Edward potatoes).
Thick fresh white bread.
Salted butter, thickly spread.
Mayonnaise on the side for occasional dunking.

Bubblebox · 17/09/2020 12:40

I rather like chips that have been soaked in gravy on buttered white bread but dh says that I am an animal.
Failing that vinegar, no salt on buttered white bread and with tonnes of ketchup.

Dozer · 17/09/2020 12:40

Bap is too much bread: chip. Medium sliced from packet better.

Love the 1/2 and 1/2 sauces.

wowfudge · 17/09/2020 12:41

Soft white buttered bread or barm cake, chip shop chips with salt and vinegar. Nothing else.

Spanish variation - bocadillo de tortilla de patatas. Crusty white roll split and filled with warm tortilla served with garlic mayo.

Unsuremover · 17/09/2020 12:44

It’s cause none of you know the nectar that is Edinburgh chippy sauce. Elevates any potato based fried product. People will claim it’s half brown sauce half vinegar but it cannot be recreated in the home.
Also yes on a roll.

WeAllHaveWings · 17/09/2020 12:53

Glasgow roll (crispy, chewy)
Butter
Chips
Salt and vinegar (vinegar soaking the bottom half of the roll so it is better eaten upside down so it doesn't fall completely apart)
Ketchup

East coast/Edinburgh salt and sauce is vile 😉

LaurieFairyCake · 17/09/2020 12:53

I'm ordering a fuckingbutty off the back of this thread

WinterAndRoughWeather · 17/09/2020 12:56

Chip shop chips with liberal salt and vinegar
Barm cake or crap sliced white (this and bacon butties being the only acceptable use for such bread)
Salted butter (thickly spread)

No ketchup or sauces, the melted butter and vinegar is perfect as it is.

Changemyname901 · 17/09/2020 12:58

Soft white roll
Chip shop chips (mixture of soft and crispy ones)
Mayo
Bit of vinegar but not so much to make the bread soggy

wowfudge · 17/09/2020 13:05

@WinterAndRoughWeather - completely agree re: uses of crap white bread. Bacon must be on such or white barm.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/09/2020 13:21

x2boys · 17/09/2020 13:52

Chip shop chips on a barn cake with gravy

Candacewasalwaysright · 17/09/2020 14:04

White bread that doesn't have a hard crust, liberally spread with butter

Chip shop or home cooked chips

Vinegar

HP sauce (never Daddies)

Yum yum yum

Tarantallegra · 17/09/2020 15:50

I'm awful and never eat a chip butty. I put the chips on buttered bread, wait for the butter to melt then take the chips off and eat the "soggy bread". I know I'm disgusting Blush

Hangingover · 17/09/2020 15:52

Lol I should get comission on that LaurieFairyCake

Soft barm slathered in butter
Scraps in the barm too
Mayo on the side
