Watch us wreck the mike, watch us wreck the mike, watch us wreck the mike.
Psych.

Now gather nicely in groups of no more than six...
Unless you're outdoors in Wales...

Oh well, come on in whatever the laws where you are. Plenty of space in this bubble of sanity Wink

Another SAHM (although I’d eat a slug before I describe myself as a “full time mummy”) who bloody HATED lockdown!

I wish I was Swedish.

110APiccadilly · 17/09/2020 11:42

@starfish88

This is interesting... It's not just Sweden. When you look at the graphs on worldometer you can see a serious drop in cases in a lot of African countries

www.theguardian.com/global-development/2020/sep/16/confounding-covid-may-have-already-peaked-africa

Also does anyone have a share token for the rest of this article... It looks quite interesting!

The more countries that get herd immunity and leave us behind, hopefully the more people will realize that what we are doing isn't working.

I was thinking now that we don't blame past societies for suffering from epidemics, they had no choice because of their technology. But to be honest I'm not sure we have a choice now. I don't think vaccine technology will give anything safe enough, quick enough for a lockdown to be viable.

I hope you're right. I worry that we're (as a country) suffering from sunk costs fallacy - having given up so much already, it really hurts to admit it didn't do much if anything to help.
BogRollBOGOF · 17/09/2020 11:58

I think sunk costs fallacy has a lot to do with it and ironically the much criticised original line back in March was better, and if you haven't got additional localised restrictions, that's largely where we are at.

My children exist to deliver me from SMUNThood Grin 5+ months under eachother's feet was not a healthy set up, and our practical circumstances are better than average.

My friend is 22. Had a baby around new year that ended up being shielded. Also a 2yo. Partner furloughed with pending redundancy. Trying to keep studying for a degree. Live in a tiny 2 up 2 down with no personal space, no escape and no support for months because of shielding. She is an admirable young woman. Oh plus postnal care (or not) means that some issues need resolving and got cancelled.

My frustrations throughout have been relatively trivial compared to real concerns over survival, trauma, health and economic realities. I can't sit there and say "well I had nice quality time with the family, let's do it all again". The damage is real.

I think we could have worked from home 10 years ago, it would have been done differently. I worked from home now and then in a job about 15 years ago. I emailed work home (to my private email), worked on it at home and emailed it back at the end of the day. If I needed to speak to a colleague, I rang them. There was obviously no video calls but conference calls by phone did exist.
Frankly I hate all the video calls, at least when I'm on the phone I can be wandering around.

Seen the NE news looks like Leeds may be next. Well imo. pubs shutting at 10pm is no bad thing, DS went through so much money that first term in Leeds. Students will be reckless, hard for those who live in those cities who have to work and raise families so I would be glad if they curbed the students. DS was so careful at home, rarely going out if he met with friends it was outdoors socially distanced he wore a mask and sanitised freely. When they get in a herd it seems all that goes out of the window.

justasking111 · 17/09/2020 13:44

Oh look Wales rattling the chains saying xmas will be the peak. The bastards.

Just checking the nightclubs PRYZM says re-opened Friday, well they can knock that on the head right now.

Well I’m well and truly depressed now. My Mum might not mentally survive this. Fuck.
I can’t even see her from outside garden. But I can go to work and sit 2metres away from workmates. And I can meet a friend in park but not in coffee shop. I have cried, again.
I’m anti social and don’t like or meet many people, but I love a potter around shops and seeing my parents when I like.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 17/09/2020 14:35

I think there needs to be more of a public backlash against Witty. He's providing BoJo with the bullets and the government are doing whatever he says. I suspect he would back off a bit if everything kicked off at him. He has had long enough in the spotlight to enjoy the power but not long enough to develop the necessary thick skin. At the moment he seemingly has all the power without any of the responsibility. (Bit like Neil Ferguson was - until he wasn't any more).

Witty 'might' be a good epidemiologist (although I'm becoming less convinced of that) but this isn't, and can never be, just about the virus.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 17/09/2020 14:41

*Whitty of course. Witty he isn't

Wishfulthinking1977 · 17/09/2020 14:44

Checking in as I haven't been able to find you lot for a while! I think you disappeared under the pile of dirty masks littering my street!! I'm in need of sanity as it seems to go from one cockwombling insane rule to another!! Literally loosing any grip on reality and another few weeks of this and I will definitely be rocking in my cupboard! My local fb has turned into the definition of who can be the more virtuous by cancelling as many fun thing as possible for 'the greater good' and sharing those memes about pissing and masks that a 4 year old could undo the analogy in their lunch break!! And breathe!! Sorry pent up anger and despair is now leaking from my every pore!! 😂😂

WouldBeGood · 17/09/2020 15:11

@Wishfulthinking1977 don’t you realise that your porous anger and despair will spread a deadly virus? We are in a global pandemic you know!!!!

While visiting in and around homes is banned, not meeting elsewhere is only guidance, so unenforcible. If she's able to leave the house, hopefully you can engineer bumping into each other.
BogRollBOGOF · 17/09/2020 15:51

Meeting in public places should be allowed, especially outdoors.

I'm noticing more facerags creeping onto the streets again. (Where people clearly aren't going shop to shop, using public transport or accompanied by a vulnerable person) I'm not quite sure how they're going to catch the virus on fresh open air (especially with today's warm sunshine/ UV) and surely if thèy're actually protecting society they're so contatgious that they shouldn't be leaving the house.

There was another good Jeremy Vine piece on the radio about symptoms and how likely they are or not to be Covid 19... embrace the snotty nose (not literally, it's still gross Grin )

Re. face rags, I'm noticing that in a lot of the places where the public must wear a face nappy, more of the staff are choosing to be barefaced, such as supermarket staff, bus drivers, lifeguards. These were some of the same workers who were labelled as "they are working while you are paid to stay at home!".

As for Xmas, some headlines this morning are saying "you children can have Christmas if you're good and obey the 6 rule". I bet Saint Boris has longed since March to start saying things like that.

zigaziga · 17/09/2020 16:08

I was going to start an AIBU but I can see some of the answers already (you do realise we are living in a global pandemic, OP?)

Toddler classes started this week (hurrah!). First one today was great. I have another one tomorrow with a different company / franchise that I used to go to pre-lockdown. They’ve emailed now to say that parents at the under 1 class don’t need to wear masks but parents at the 1 year + classes do.
So I emailed to cancel my term. Was IBU???

Exactly how am I supposed to talk and sing to a 1 year old in a mask? No masks at all at the group today so clearly it’s not mandatory.

PickAChew · 17/09/2020 16:18

A couple of the exceptions to our local no mixing households rules - the guidance is on our council website, now.

to enable one or more persons in the gathering to avoid injury or illness or to escape a risk of harm

to provide care or assistance to a vulnerable person

I wouod say that allows regular face to face contact with close friends or relatives with delicate mental health, even if they do no live alone.

My 20 month old rips my mask straight off so I would cancel too.

Hell no, you did the right thing. So much language is learned by imitation and communication is about far more than just speech. (which is one reason why I suck at phone calls)
DominaShantotto · 17/09/2020 16:24

Yay negative test result for DD1's cough - that's the pair of them back to school in the morning!

zigaziga · 17/09/2020 16:26

@Miraculous yes, my DD tries to take mine off constantly.. she either finds it funny or very distressing depending on the day.

Anyway the tone of the email back is as if I’m David Icke and believe that CV is a 5G hoax Hmm ... apparently they’re just being “cautious” so it’s disappointing that I feel the way I do.... well if you’re being extra cautious, don’t open then? I’m not sure how a toddler is supposed to learn to talk and interact when they can’t even see your face so what is even the point? Let’s just distress a load of 1 year olds and charge them £11 for 40 minutes for the privilege.

Good to hear! I’m so tired of hearing “but it COULD be a Covid symptom!” Someone posted guidelines from a school in Blackpool which listed “tiredness” as a possible symptom and therefore reason to keep a child home and get tested. Find me a child (or parent or teacher) who isn’t tired right now Hmm

He still ended in a daft way though. The caller was saying she knew it was just a run of the mill virus because the symptoms weren't Covid, and that the cough only came on after snottiness. Her work had told her she couldn't go back without having the whole family tested, which she did, Negative. She says still feeling rough but still not Covid but Jeremy was advising her to get tested again. This was despite his programme about too many negatives but too many obviously none Covids were getting tested. I think they're making him do none dementory slots but he is still a dementor.

Wish I was allowed to! Originally we were told it was a choice to wear face coverings, the first day it became mandatory not many staff wore them. Customers complained in our store- multiply that by the number of stores and probable complaints to head office and it has been decided that when on the shop floor we have to wear them. I hate it.
