How much does your child’s phone contract cost?

Dd has a phone, we just need a SIM card for it. What’s the best way of doing it? Can I add it onto my contract or do something completely separate?

My dds have pay as you go sims from O2. £10 a month for unlimited texts and minutes and enough data (I forget how much).

Username7521 · 10/09/2020 19:52

£9 with smarty. 30GB worth of data.

TheGreatWave · 10/09/2020 19:57

We all have a Tesco SIM only contract. I'm not sure of the breakdown but I pay £36 a month for 4 Sims (it isn't £9 each as we have different packages) I get some discount on each due to family perks.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 10/09/2020 20:15

Giffgaff. You can change it depending on how much data you think she'll need. DS costs £6-8 a month

MyDogSmells · 10/09/2020 20:16

Good selection of tariffs at Giff Gaff

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 10/09/2020 20:16

Do you know if her phone is locked to a network? You can get it unlocked, or you can get a sim only card that matches

Igotmyholiday · 10/09/2020 20:17

Giff gaff £8 a month, I've not had any complaints... yet

DeadDoorpost · 10/09/2020 20:17

DH just got his for 5 a month, unlimited texts and mins and 3GB from iD. You can change it anytime, it's a monthly rolling, and data accumulates if not used, up Tina certain point

MondeoFan · 10/09/2020 20:18

£8 month giff gaff 15 year old

Ginfordinner · 10/09/2020 20:19

Check the coverage before you buy. GiffGaff are amazing - but not where we live as the coverage is rubbish, so we are with Plusnet (virtual provider for EE, but better customer service). We each have 8GB data for £8 a month each. It is plenty, as we log onto free Wi-Fi wherever we are so our data allowances never get used up

We use GiffGaff which runs on the O2 network, however you need to know if the providor works in your area. Info on deals www.moneysavingexpert.com/mobiles/cheap-sim-only-contracts/

Mine is a tenner a month added onto my EE contract. Stupid me was in a bit of a tizz trying to get my upgrade and turned down the 6gb for £6pm in favour of 10gb for £10. I completely forgot about gifting Data with EE and I had far too much for me to use. Could have given her as much data as she needed and saved £4 a month. Gonna fix that as soon as I can though.

sleepyhead · 10/09/2020 20:23

Ds1 has an £8 sim from ID Mobile. 1000 minutes, unlimited texts, 8GB data.

That offer isn't available now, but you can get 9GB for £9 per month.

I just set up the account in my name and he's got the app downloaded onto his phone so he can keep an eye on his usage.

Scbchl · 10/09/2020 20:26

I'd get a giffgaff sim.

H1978 · 10/09/2020 20:30

Dd1(18) and dd2(15) both on plusnet 30 day rolling contract unlimited mins and txts 4.5gb data for £6 per month. Both are paid alongside our broadband also with plusnet.

BananaLlamaConCalma · 10/09/2020 20:32

DD has a Tesco mobile sim. When out she tethers off my phone. When in she uses WiFi. We put credit on if she is away from us and may need to contact us. It's £10 and gives her lots of stuff for the whole month. Then it goes away.

SpottedOnMN · 10/09/2020 20:42

One has £7.50 a month with unlimited talk and texts and 4gb data. The other has £1 a week with just a few minutes, quite a few texts and about 1gb a week of data. The latter is an amazing deal through EE where the data allowance increases every few months.

plmqaz · 10/09/2020 20:52

Giffgaff. Free calls to other giffgaff numbers and most helpfully can vary your bundle each month (want to use more
data on holiday - no problem just buy a bigger bundle that month!)

gingajewel · 10/09/2020 22:45

For everyone that just has data etc where do you get there phones from? Do you but them one as a one off?

DioneTheDiabolist · 10/09/2020 22:47

£10 a month, BT deal attached to my home broadband contract.

I'm not sure exactly what my husband set up for him but it's a contract on BT Mobile, pretty much unlimited I think, he's never run out of data. Had the phone a year now. I would definitely recommend BT mobile, if the coverage works for you.

RedSoloCup · 10/09/2020 23:48

We buy phone reconditioned on eBay, I have 3 contracts currently with three (best signal here) all £10 unlimited texts and mins and 8 data.

gingajewel · 11/09/2020 08:27

Thankyou all, my daughter wants a phone for Christmas so I presume it would be. Enter to buy her a phone out right and then get a sim with a good deal on it?
