How much does your child’s phone contract cost?

Dd has a phone, we just need a SIM card for it. What’s the best way of doing it? Can I add it onto my contract or do something completely separate?

£10 with giffgaff, used to be cheaper but increased data when she went to boarding school

I've just changed our youngest daughter's ID mobile plan, she was on 6gb of data for £12 a month and after this thread, I've just changed it to 12gb of data for £12. She'll be happy because she almost always uses all of her data.

She got a new iPhone SE for Christmas 2016 when she was in year 6, and has since had her older sister's hand me down iPhone X and passed her original phone onto her Dad (he's not bothered about tech so always has the cast offs).

Smarty. £10/mth for 30GB data and unlimited calls/texts.

Giff gaff for DS(16) & DD(13). Lockdown went on £6 tariff. Now back at school, returned to £10 goodybag tariff for 9gb data.

Ds1's phone was a second hand Samsung on ebay - it was in immaculate condition and although an older, cheaper model does everything he wanted it to (I asked him to give me a list of apps and functions he needed so I could check that the phone would be able to support them).

PAYG and they use the wifi at home so it's only occasional texts or short calls when out of the house. They use iPads at school. £10 lasts ages!

Another recommendation for Giff Gaff, Smarty, Lebara or PlusNet depending on who provides the best coverage where you are. A good overview is on MSE:

www.moneysavingexpert.com/mobiles/cheap-sim-only-contracts/

Loads of data for a tenner or less a month and most without a contract, you generally pay for either 30 days service or until you run out of data, by card. I've switched between all of them in an attempt to find the best signal, which is easy enough to do.

For everyone that just has data etc where do you get there phones from? Do you but them one as a one off

Yes, just buy a phone outright. Almost always works out far cheaper, should be under £20 a month on average for a decent but not high end smart phone, which are just ridiculously priced these days.

I've got one of the Motorola G7 series that cost £75 after cashback in last year's Black Friday sale. It's a brilliant phone that I can see lasting for another few years.

Thanks everyone I’ve gone with Plusnet, £8 for 7GB. I tried to add her onto my EE account and the best they could do was £8 for 250Mb.

DD has a smarty contract. Think it's £6 per month and she gets a refund for unused data. So it's not often more than about £5-£5.50 each month.
I'm on a contract and get an upgrade every couple of years. She gets my old phone.

BananaLlamaConCalma · 11/09/2020 14:40

@gingajewel DD gets my old phone when I get a new one. She smashed it so I looked at music magpie as a few friends have purchased from there with no issues. In the end I got her a silicone phone case that holds it all together 😹

ilovebagpuss · 11/09/2020 15:06

My old phone and a sim from plusnet 5.00 she doesn’t use much data outside the home so is fine with this

BackforGood · 11/09/2020 15:27

I pay £7.50 with Talkmobile.
dd has been paying £6pm with Giff Gaff.
