As a timer when I'm cooking
Ask her to play 80s/90s/ rock music, usually while I'm cooking or cleaning
Quick quiz
Turn the bedroom lights on/off/dim

AlwaysInAQ · 09/09/2020 08:22

Set a timer for cooking etc
Make different playlists on amazon music.
My DC's use them as alarm clock
Play radio through it for most of day.
Ask it questions of random things I think of during the day!
Ask it to tell you a joke.
Make shopping lists

RomeoLikedCapuletGirls · 09/09/2020 08:25

Same. Here are mine:

Usual:

-play audible
-play music
-play news and podcasts
-set timers and alarms

Slightly unusual:
-play Friends quizzes
-set myself routines for tidying up. Makes it slightly more fun but they are limited in their abilities.
-learn languages with Innovative Language skills

1happyhippie · 09/09/2020 08:27

I didn’t think of podcasts @RomeoLikedCapuletGirls! Will try this later.

I’m the same really, timers, alarms, music, random questions, and shopping lists.

FizzyPink · 09/09/2020 08:27

Tell me the time when I wake up in the middle of the night so I don’t look at my phone.
Play music (although recently she’s refused to play Spotify and I have no idea why)
Turn the lights/kettle on - we have smart plugs and Phillips Hue lights all over the house which is very useful

1starwars2 · 09/09/2020 08:33

If you have a teenager in your house who is being annoying, say "Alexa, do teenage mode". 😂

chomalungma · 09/09/2020 08:56

Timer. Lots of timers

Listening to music
Time checks

Mine's in the kitchen.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 09/09/2020 09:01

Timers
Play music
Fart
Tell her you love her- she sings to you
Make announcements
'Drop in on' whichever dc I need to speak to (we have an Alexa in every room)
I used to turn lights on and off but they disconnected and won't reconnectHmm
Ask her things when i can't be bothered to type them into Google
DS uses her to control the TV if he can't find the remote.

MsEllany · 09/09/2020 09:03

Timer for cooking, play radio, kids ask for beatboxing and farts Hmm.

I also connect my phone and play podcasts and music.

Handsnotwands · 09/09/2020 09:03

we only use it as a radio - i bought some socket plug things to use with lamps but can't make them work #luddite

Saladd0dger · 09/09/2020 09:04

My lot like what’s the time mr wolf and truth or dare. I ask her for recipes

My light has also disconnected and won’t reconnect

Champagneforeveryone · 09/09/2020 09:07

We've got them in most rooms, mostly used to:
Add items to shopping lists
Set timers
Turn lights on
Turn plugs on
Play radio
Control the robot hoover
Song quiz

Also great for either fanfares or sad trombone noises when DH or DS have an announcement Grin

Knotaknitter · 09/09/2020 09:20

I have a second one in my son's room. I no longer have to scream from the foot of the stairs to get his attention when he has headphones on, I just call him. I announce "dinnertime" while I'm plating up.

I have a couple of routines set, one that turns off the table lamp in the living room and turns on my bedside light, another gives me the news, the weather, waits some minutes then turns my bedside light off. One of the plugs has disconnected again, I will have to sort it before December as it's the one I use for the Christmas tree. The big name one has been faultless, the off brand one needs reconnecting every few months.

FrogsSpawnofSanta · 09/09/2020 09:20

We have them in most rooms and use them for
Drop in
Announcements
Timers
Alarm clock
Reminders
Music
Weather forecast
Audible
Finding my phone
Viewing the ring cameras
Switching on lights

MonsteraDeliciosa · 09/09/2020 09:26

As well as most of the above, animal sounds and farts Blush

TeddyBeans · 09/09/2020 09:29

I've asked mine to do maths for me on many occasions, very helpful when you have your hands full of tape measure and you need to know the exact half of 127.3!

Plus most of the above

HowFastIsTooFast · 09/09/2020 09:31

Largely just to turn the lights on and off, set timers or reminders and sometimes play radio stations or Spotify.

Absolutely not used to her full potential, although she's got some limits due to where we live, things like ordering an Uber or a takeaway aren't possible here.

I was quite pleased to discover 'whisper mode' so I can now check the time when I wake up at night without waking DP Smile

PaternosterLoft · 09/09/2020 09:36

-Drop in
-Broadcast
-Routines - "Alexa, dinner is ready" brings forth many alarms and her saying dinner dinner dinner dinner dinner dinner dinner dinner's ready" I've got one for each child as well. And one for DH which sings Polly put the kettle on and I can activate it from my phone when I am on my way home.
-Reminders - every 15 minutes on weekdays

  • Play radio
  • Play Hamilton (other albums are available)
  • Bluetooth pair to my phone - I can't get her to play podcasts directly
  • Tell that bloody robovac to go home
  • What's the weather
  • Maths
  • Recipes
  • Turning lights on or off

I would love an app to tell me if the cats are in or out - we have a microchip catflap with the app, it should be straightforward.

JollyAndBright · 09/09/2020 09:37

We pretty much exclusively use ours as voice activation for the harmony and hue.

We have pretty much everything set up to it, all lights, pc’s, tv, sky game consoles, Apple TV, amp,
So we just tell it to turn things on and off, change volumes or light brightness/colour, change channels etc.

LunaHardy · 09/09/2020 09:39

Play baby shark
Set a timer
Play baby shark
