Black section on MN

PatricksRum · 09/09/2020 03:16

I think it would be great if Mumsnet could make a black parents section/ section for black users.

Why? What kind of topics might be on there that aren't on the existing boards?

Confused

A separate space for black people to discuss things. Hmm

Buying from black businesses
Style and beauty for black women
Black parenting

I do think that you might have a good point here op.
Although I think that it might be better to have separate topics eg black style and beauty as opposed to an umbrella 'Black' section.

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 09/09/2020 03:42

Interesting idea, I like it. Also haircare, some white parents of mixed heritage dc might appreciate advice. I'm black but my daughter's mixed race and her hair took me a while to learn!

ElizabethMainwaring · 09/09/2020 03:45

I can't believe that this hasn't been suggested before to be honest.

PatricksRum · 09/09/2020 03:45

Yy Re hair!
I see a lot of poets about white people's hair.
It would be good to discuss other types of hair.
Hair care for black children

MNHQ

Please can you make this happen.

I feel we are so un-catered for on this site.
Evident from the first comment. Although that's just white privilege

I've reported this to MNHQ, it would be great to see what their initial response is.
It's definitely got legs.

ElizabethMainwaring · 09/09/2020 03:54

Cross posted!

HeronLanyon · 09/09/2020 03:57

Great idea. Obvious idea ! Surprising it doesn’t already exist. Good thought op.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 09/09/2020 04:10

Would be great I think and help dispel that MN is racist.

Also sometimes after experiencing a micro aggression or racist incident and you want to talk about it's hard to think of posting on MN because the first responses will be about how you misinterpreted it or did something wrong instead of just support. You do get it eventually but it gets lost amongst the gaslighting. Hope MN listens.

Hair tips would be great too...my 4c hair has no retention and I hate watching YouTube vids.

ElizabethMainwaring · 09/09/2020 04:13

@Dastardlythefriendlymutt
Is there a widespread perception that MN is racist?

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 09/09/2020 04:21

Is there a widespread perception that MN is racist?
Yes and hostile.

Posters complain about it here on the site and off.

Oh god yes.

A while back I started some threads, You're white, you cannot experience racism

The response was crazy.
So much whataboutery

ElizabethMainwaring · 09/09/2020 04:28

Thank you for your replies.
Therefore, it would be a perfect way for MN to address this.

PestymcPestFace · 09/09/2020 04:30

What would happen if I started a thread ...I have 3a hair and it keeps forgetting it is meant to be shiny, help.

Does it just get lost in S&B so no good advice or does the advice become negative?

Firstly, If someone started a thread regarding their hair in S&B thsy wouldn't even need to state their hair type (white privilege), they would merely describe

Secondly,
It's not necessarily that it would get lost. It may do but you'd have to actively put your hair type to get a response from ethnic minorities

Thirdly,
It goes above the amount of responses. This is about having a user section for us to discuss all manner of things that affect us.

I think it's an excellent idea.

ChanceChanceChance · 09/09/2020 05:05

I agree it is a good idea. My only small reservation would be if it makes arseholes some posters try to stop people posting about certain things in the main boards.

I despair at the things said on threads when posters describe incidents of blatant racism. It is not usually overt racism, but constant apologising, minimising, explaining away, whataboutery. It is depressing.

ZombieFan · 09/09/2020 05:18

I imagine if MN was to go down this route, it would have to provide a section for all colours, ... religions, ... ethnicity's, ... races, ...political affiliation, ... gender, ... species & every other sub group of human categorisation?

Shouldn't MN would stay above identity politics?

BlackLetterDay · 09/09/2020 05:19

I think it would be a good idea, I imagine it wouldn't be used that much tho, surely theres a thousand better places to discuss these things.

Mn is biased, hence the ltb shite. Most people are happily shacked up and fully ensconced in middle class lalaland. Hence the lack of imagination why anyone would hang on to a less than ideal bloke for security.

No they wouldn't.

We have a feminism section without a men's rights section. Why? Because women are at the bottom of the chain in society.

Black people are at the bottom.

Actually that is a good point.

May mean we aren't posting enough on other boards and therefore "whitening" the rest of mn
