I’ve met a De’Ath, a Grocock, a Pong, a Willey, a Horsfall, a Bott, a Badman, a Beavers and a Thrush in my time. Must confess I quite like the idea of Badman.

Used to deal with a lady with the surname cockshut. No idea why she didn’t keep her maiden name.

Also knew of a woman who changed her name to Eve Church. She was a tad religious Grin

Not unusual, but a lad I went to school with was called Sidebottom.

I used to get letters in an old job from someone with the surname Pencil.

Also heard ffield, which I absolutely love.

Didn't get the chance to find out if it was true

God

Apparently it's a not all that unusual surname in Austria. But pretty uncommon here in Germany and in the English-speaking world. Prounounced Gord.

The joke was that I was interviewing this person for a uni place, so I managed to interview God that day - and she was a woman Wink.

I once answered the phone at work to Mr Smith. His initials? WH. I asked the inevitable "What - as in The WH Smith???", and he said yes, he was a grandson Grin

Mentounasc · 08/09/2020 15:17

Other startling German surnames I've come across (apart from the incomparable Fuck) are Unverzagt (indefatigable) and Hühnermörder (chicken murderer).

spagbog5 · 08/09/2020 15:19

Cochhead.
I had to ask twice and then try to keep a straight face Grin
