Sex.

I didn't think that could possibly be a real name but I'm not kidding. And she was a teacher!

There was someone with the surname Jism (Jisum/Jisam?) on the radio yesterday. I’m hoping for their sake that I misheard it.

Two of the loveliest teachers at my primary school were
Mrs Gittins
and
Mrs Careless.
I had a music teacher at secondary called Mrs Organ.

Carouselfish · 08/09/2020 18:30

Tickle and Backholer.

Also when I lived in the Philippines there was a high up in the Catholic named
Cardinal Sin.

He was actually a great guy and had a brilliant sense of humour, he referred to his official residence as The House of Sin. He wasn’t afraid of speaking out against the government. One of my favourite quotes, when asked if he thought Western democracy, with their elections and the people knowing the result the day after was something to aspire to, being: ‘You’d should really admire the Filipino people, they know the result the day before the election’.

In the village where I grew up, there were families by the names of:

Dick
Maycock
Raper
Baybutt
Nappy
And also our surname, which is very unusual but not especially rude-sounding!

The headmaster of a local primary school was called Mr Willey, which was almost unbearably amusing to all the 6-year-old boys he had to teach.

In other areas of my life, I've encountered people by such names as Bastard, De'Ath, Silley, Smellie, Prettyman (he wasn't), and Cockburn (which they pronounced Coburn, like the port). Much as I get annoyed by having to correct people mispronouncing my name, I feel very lucky that at least it isn't Kunt or Soggyflaps or something like that...

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 08/09/2020 20:08

This thread has made me think of the first chapter of Notes From a Small Island, when Bill Bryson encounters a man with a ridiculous name that apparently only the British have, like Colin Crapspray or Bertram Pantyshield 😂 Do Americans really not have people called Shufflebottom and Crapper?
