Spiders :(

nancybotwinbloom · 07/09/2020 22:59

Lying in bed watching Dexter and a massive fucking spider just ran across my arm and into the bed under the duvet.

Cue hysterical screaming I am terrified of them.

Partner laughing because I said they come In pairs and there must be another one close by.

This will give me night terrors for a few nights.

Anyone got any tried and tested methods for keeping them out?

I hate this time of year because they are all coming inside.

Apparently spiders dont like conkers and lavender... so I have conkers by my bed and lavender plug ins around the house.

nancybotwinbloom · 08/09/2020 11:53

Going for conkers at the weekend!

My granny swore by confers but I don’t know whether they worked or she just stopped being able to see the spiders cause her eyesight was going in her latter years!

Although I’m sceptical because spiders do not have a sense of smell...they have no nose! I keep tarantulas and true spiders and the only thing the react to is vibration. So I doubt lavender or conkers do a thing.

We have ultrasonic plug-ins and use SpiderX repellent spray (from Amazon) and floor wipes with orange oil. They taste through their feet and hate citrus. Touch wood it's worked well for the past few Autumns.

LittleMachine · 08/09/2020 13:37

You need any spray that says it kills cockroaches. Raid, Dethlac.
For some reason, this country loves spiders and people like to bang on about how they kill flies, so they don't put the spider killing on the tin, but they work.

I can kill flies with a rolled up magazine thanks. I don't need any spiders 👋

Itsrainingnotmen · 08/09/2020 13:37

Imo if you can watch Dexter your spider fears are the least of your worries..

lynsey91 · 08/09/2020 13:41

Conkers don't work. I am terrified of spiders and dread it when they start coming into the house. I get DH to put them out in the garage.

This year though they have been coming in throughout the year. We have had probably 6 since about March.

I am thinking about trying hypnotherapy to see if I can overcome my fear

nancybotwinbloom · 08/09/2020 13:41

Hahaha yes Dexter. I don't find it scary to be honest but anything with zombies or ouija boards I'm out!

When we were in Aldi the other week they had a brilliant spider-catching device on sale. You squeeze the handle and a thingy with plastic spikes opens out, you put it over the spider, release the handle and the 'thingy' encloses the spider. Take outside and release the spider unharmed. They even give you a plastic spider to practise with. Have only had cause to use it once, but it worked perfectly. I think it was 7.99.

Itsrainingnotmen · 08/09/2020 14:55

How about these??

Spiders :(
TweeBree · 08/09/2020 15:27

We were being bombarded for most of August but lavender has been working brilliantly.

VesperLynne · 08/09/2020 15:40

Don’t buy a house with a thatched roof. I would send you a pic of just how many there are at the moment and we’re not into October yet, which is prime spicky season. We had to get a man in to get rid of them ( always felt guilty of that ) when the girls were kids, my son on the hand loved them.

IdblowJonSnow · 08/09/2020 15:46

Ugh. I bloody hate them. Also get a bit anxious around this time of year.
Can people not post pics on threads where posters clearly have issues w spiders plz! Not funny!!

lynsey91 · 08/09/2020 15:59

@exiledfromcornwall those spider catchers are no good for anyone scared of spiders though. No way could I get that close to one. I normally can't even stay in the room!

It's childish and nasty to put pictures of spiders on a thread about people being scared of them

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 08/09/2020 16:01

Crawling insect killer from the range has been my best friend all day today! No word of a lie I've sprayed and killed 5 and found another dead one too. You spray it on them and they curl up and die - yes it isn't pleasant but it works!

nancybotwinbloom · 08/09/2020 16:07

@Itsrainingnotmen it was deffo the big bastard!

OP posts:
nancybotwinbloom · 08/09/2020 16:08

@VesperLynne

I actually would like to see. Weirdly I am
Interested!

nancybotwinbloom · 08/09/2020 16:09

I will try the spider catcher for when my DH isn't home. I don't kill them. The only ones I leave are the cellar ones as I know they eat the big bastards

nancybotwinbloom · 08/09/2020 16:10

There is a spider in my garden at the minute on a web between my chairs and burner it's currently got a fly if anyone would like to see.

It's not big enough for me to be terrified but I'd still be a Mrs did I walked into the web.

OP posts:
exiledfromcornwall · 08/09/2020 17:52

Hey it wasn't me that put the pictures of spiders on there!

Itsrainingnotmen · 08/09/2020 18:14

The title surely speaks for itself? Maybe look for titles headed fluffy unicorns??

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 08/09/2020 18:18

They hate peppermint too apparently.

lynsey91 · 08/09/2020 18:40

@exiledfromcornwall I know it wasn't you that put the pictures on. The second paragraph wasn't aimed at you but I just couldn't be bothered to put the poster's name in!

@dillydallydollydaydream7 no way do I want the spiders killed. I just don't want the in the house so DH puts them in the garage

nancybotwinbloom · 08/09/2020 18:50

The garage! Ours go in the street. Near the actual road as far away as he can!

OP posts:
lynsey91 · 08/09/2020 20:24

@nancybotwinbloom well the garage is at the end of the garden about 100 foot away.

He puts them in there because we hope they will survive although most likely the cold kills them.

I don't want them dead but because I am so scared of them I just can't let them stay in the house. I hope that if I have hypnotherapy and it works I won't be scared of them and will be able to let them stay. Well at least downstairs. I don't think I want them in the bedroom although, thankfully, we never get any there
