My house is overrun with cellar spiders

They’re everywhere, in every room, even the bathroom. In corners everywhere, in kitchen cupboards, under window sills, everywhere!

I vac them all up but the next day they’re back again.

How do I get rid of them?!

Are they the really big ones with long thick legs and properly look at you? We've had a few of those recently. I'm considering cleansing with fire!

PaternosterLoft · 07/09/2020 11:33

You need a couple of cats.

Aworldofmyown · 07/09/2020 11:33

I keep those as the kill all the other spiders Smile

Originalyellowbelly · 07/09/2020 11:34

Same here OP, they just hang around in corners for days despite hoovering them up. Do they ever move, what do they eat? What is their purpose?

Nasty, spindly legged, useless creatures.

Originalyellowbelly · 07/09/2020 11:35

PaternosterLoft I have 4 cats, they show no interest, almost as useless as the spiders.

SherryPalmer · 07/09/2020 11:36

There not useless they are brilliant. They eat the big, black house spiders.

You’d think so, and yet the largest, furriest house spider we have seen in years popped up on our living room ceiling on Saturday!

Definitely this!
SirVixofVixHall · 07/09/2020 11:37

I have them too. I leave them alone, they don't bother me, although their spinning can be alarming.
They are predators of the large house spiders, which is a bit grim.

We have them across the whole life span.

Its just the time of year I think. It used to massively bother me until I realised its just a couple of weeks in the spring and autumn.

.

Morgan12 · 07/09/2020 11:39

And you still live there?

I'd honestly be at a hotel until the house sold.

MrsWooster · 07/09/2020 11:42

They are the spindly ones like daddy-long-legs and they catch the thick legged ones AND mosquitoes, midges and flies. What’s not to like?!?

Not in this house. In this house they’re just lazy. Probably too tired out by all the breeding they do 😏

Blep · 07/09/2020 11:44

I've got loads of them too, I've been told it's because my house is quite damp and that's what they're attracted to. Hopefully once my damp problems are fixed the spiders will be gone!

Emmie12345 · 07/09/2020 11:44

Mine too!

Massive thibgs with striped legs and walk casually into the room

Am literally deranged and can’t sleep . Went to Devon to get loads of conkers to line house with !!!

Why are they so bad ? Do they think the human race is on way to extinction with coronavirus ??

Emmie12345 · 07/09/2020 11:46

My dog does nothing except is now obsessed with smelting the conkers

Don’t think it’s cos of the damp as my house is a new build and no damp !?

Emmie12345 · 07/09/2020 11:47

Apparently monkeys eat them )

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 07/09/2020 11:49

I have loads too. I always Hoover them up as they're the webby buggers that create cobwebs everywhere.
A few years ago I was sat watching TV with a box of xmas decs beside me that DH had got out of the cellar. One of them crawled out of the box and across my face, scared the shit out of me!

FAQs · 07/09/2020 11:53

Spray Indorex in the corners, joints and in fabrics it works really, really well. They’ll stay in the cellar (breeding so never open the door)

SingingSands · 07/09/2020 11:53

We have loads too, always do at the end of summer. They eat other spiders (DS and I stood and watched this the other day in gross captivation) as well as little flies and midgies.

We have several in every room and as long as they stick to their corners, I'm happy to let them stay.

We do have a humungous one in the kitchen - same size as my hand!! I discovered this when I went to open the kitchen window and accidentally disturbed it. Now that one DID bother me because she was SO enormous! She went mad, waving her legs at me!

FAQs · 07/09/2020 11:54

Conkers are poisonous to dogs, just in case you have one who might attempt to eat them.

Manolin · 07/09/2020 11:55

Got a few herds of the things here. In fact, I allow them to breed because as other posters say they eat all the other bugs. We had two broods of little ones in August. Around 80 or so of them. I thought of coming on here and asking for some names.

They move at night when it is dark and track their prey down by following their scent. At first light they move back to their corners and stay there. One even joins me in the shower. They are your friend - just imagine them as an arachnid version of hobbits.
