My house is overrun with cellar spiders

They’re everywhere, in every room, even the bathroom. In corners everywhere, in kitchen cupboards, under window sills, everywhere!

I vac them all up but the next day they’re back again.

How do I get rid of them?!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcidae

Cellar spiders.
I grew up calling Crane Flies Daddy Long Legs, not Pholcidae spiders, some people call Harvestmen Daddy Long Legs too.

I've just watched a video about cellar spiders! Didn't realise they killed other spiders. I'll leave the couple I have.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 11/09/2020 11:09

DS found a massive moth fluttering around his room last night at bed time. He called DH to deal with it but by the time DH got there, it had been caught and killed by a cellar spider. DS was delighted; we had been telling the kids for years that cellar spiders were the good guys but now they really believe us. We have some in every room in the house and we don't interfere with them.

rorosemary · 11/09/2020 11:17

@SirVixofVixHall

I have them too. I leave them alone, they don't bother me, although their spinning can be alarming. They are predators of the large house spiders, which is a bit grim.
Don't leave them alone. My DH told me to leave one alone in the washing room.... that is till he walked in one day and saw her sitting happily among her 2000 little babies.
LER83 · 11/09/2020 13:32

I feel bad now as I squished a massive cellar spider in my dds bedroom this morning, didn't know they take down the big buggers! Although we are overrun with cellar spiders and have even more of the big house variety so they aren't doing a very good job!

SquatBetty · 11/09/2020 15:10

I hate spiders but I leave the cellar ones alone - I'd much rather have those spindly, still cobwebby bastards hanging about in my corners than huge hairy house spider cunts running about on the floor

FO70 · 11/09/2020 15:13

Even though all corners were vacced three days ago, yesterday they appeared again including one in a corner on the worktop. No thank you!

My house isn't damp either and I suddenly have loads too. It's the time of year - autumn = spiders. I've tried putting them out and being nice, but the little fuckers just come back in, so now I kill any spiders I find in my house. It does get rid of them ... until the next autumn anyway Grin

VenusClapTrap · 11/09/2020 15:58

Mine all seem to have fucked off and I’m gutted because now I have an infestation of cardinal spiders. I am a nervous wreck every evening and can’t go in the bathroom until someone’s checked it first.

Please come back, spindly cellar spider friends!

Manolin · 11/09/2020 16:14

Happy to do a cellar spider exchange if anyone is interested. Have a lot here and they are keeping me company and entertained.

If Carlsberg did spiders they would do cellar spiders.

LivingInTheBackOfBeyond · 11/09/2020 18:05

I have a phobia of big spiders but don’t mind cellar spiders. We had a nest on our sitting room ceiling (I won’t post my picture) that I left but am now kind of regretting it as they’re everywhere in the house and we have loads of cobwebs, which I can’t disturb when there’s a spider in. Good to know that they get rid of other spiders though, I can’t buy loose bananas after visiting Costa Rica and seeing the size of the spiders there!

miyhh · 11/09/2020 18:43

Omg. My house too! This is the first time I have ever come across them and didn't even know what the hell was happening. Had to Google what they were! Where have they come from? I never used to get them bedore.

OldEvilOwl · 11/09/2020 20:16

This thread has given me shivers. I've seen two big ones here in the last few days. One was in my bedroom - I saw it in the wall with just the light from the lamp it was so big. The other one was running across the kitchen floor as I walked into the kitchen. Hate them! I keep checking the walls and corners of the room I'm in Confused

BangingOn · 11/09/2020 20:20

We also have cellar spiders everywhere, but our cottage is old and damp so prime territory for them. I love the way they eat house spiders (didn’t believe it until I saw it myself) but they are webby little buggers so I do cull them and their webs occasionally once they start taking the piss.

fairydustandpixies · 11/09/2020 20:30

I'm utterly terrified of spiders, I have waking nightmares that they're dangling over my head. I've had a couple of giant house spiders this year and literally ran out of the house screaming.

I had no idea that cellar spiders were so helpful. Oddly enough I can just about cope with those but scream at daddy long legs.

I've loads of cellar spiders in my house atm, I shall leave them be in that case. Just dust around them for now! Rather them that the huge hairy fuckers the size of your hand!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 11/09/2020 21:03

We’ve had a cellar spider living under the sink in our downstairs loo for ages, I keep threatening it with the hoover but then she had a baby and now I can’t do it!

How long do cellar spiders live? Asking for a friend

BubbleBoy12 · 11/09/2020 21:06

We get these!! Not sure why, we get them the corners. I hoover them when I can.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 11/09/2020 22:09

How do they kill the other type of spiders if they always stay in their spot?? I never see mine move!

FO70 · 14/09/2020 14:45

Just opened the cutlery drawer and there was one in there Envy

Please please tell me how to banish them from my house

SusieCutiePie · 22/09/2020 21:52

As per the other posts, my house is overran by cellar spiders. Been here 9 years and it's never been great for spiders - think old cottage, thatched roof, doors/windows not fitting but this is seriously getting me down this year. I can't even go to the loo without finding one hanging upside down from the underside of the loo roll!! Has anyone found a good way (chemical or otherwise) to vamoose these critters?? Seriously upsetting me this year - what with being at home more time than previous years.

tootyfruitypickle · 22/09/2020 22:00

I’m so happy I moved house last year and this house has lots of those spindly spiders. Just posted on the other thread too that I’ve finally become accustomed to them . They just hang and don’t scare me anymore . I no longer hoover them. And now I learn that they dispose of the running hairy spiders I hate!!
Karma is alive and well

oldmotherriley · 22/09/2020 22:04

Spider mating season - they are looking for mates, by the time the clocks go back, they will be gone. Good to have them around, they eat other insects.

CoronaIsWatching · 22/09/2020 22:05

I don't mind those ones, they have the decency to stay in the corners and not bother you. It's the massive house spiders that have the temerity to jump out at you and run across the living room floor at the same speed as a formula 1 car, that I hate. We normally get loads at this time of year, not seen any yet, maybe spider season is delayed this year

BlackeyedSusan · 23/09/2020 00:21

Cellar spiders are ok, though probably not in the cutlery drawer.

NewnameNelly · 23/09/2020 00:27

I hoover them, declutter, cover any holes with silicone, shut windows, have a cleaner every week, have spider plug ons, spray peppermint and lavender around the house. We don't have as many now. Hoover behind beds and sofas as well!
