I'm watching the press conference on the news, they are skirting around something.
One fatality and several injured in different locations.
Confused

Anyone?

I think it was gay men that were attacked.

TheQueef · 06/09/2020 11:44

Thanks Shh
Not a hate crime, not terror related, not gang related and only looking for one suspect.

They seem to be confident of what it isn't.

I've been wondering the same thing, OP. Something very odd in the way it's being reported.

walksen · 06/09/2020 11:46

I think it was gay men that were attacked.

Surely that would be classed as a hate crime though.

Belledan1 · 06/09/2020 11:48

Hurst Street is a gay bar area. So sad.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/09/2020 11:53

Looks like it was Hurst Street but also over by Snow Hill. Theres no mention of it only being gay men that were attacked so I won't jump to any conclusions.

DrDreReturns · 06/09/2020 12:03

I used to work near that area (the Arcadian.) It's also the Chinese quarter. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions, the police will release more information in due course.

Belledan1 · 06/09/2020 12:03

Obviously want to get a proper description before releasing to stop people accusing others.

Elsiebear90 · 06/09/2020 12:05

I live in Birmingham, there’s been talk of it being two gangs of men who left Arcadian (area of bars are clubs next to hurst street-not a “gay” area), I see they’re saying it’s not gang related, but who goes clubbing carrying a knife if you’re not involved in a gang?!

Gingernaut · 06/09/2020 12:11

Chinese Quarter and Gay Quarter overlap around The Arcadian Centre.

Plenty of White/Het-friendly bars and nightclubs around there. Snobs on the corner of Smallbrook Queensway is a big one.

Weird that the stabbings occurred in two different areas - Hurst Street and Snow Hill - almost like people were being chased across town.

Evidence is still being gathered, could be, as police say, random nutter, targetting no one in particular.

walksen · 06/09/2020 12:15

News conference said stabbings were over 4 areas over 1.5 hours.

VampireBill · 06/09/2020 12:16

I've been finding the media coverage a bit odd - even came on here earlier just have a look to see if anyone had a better idea. I couldn't understand why the girl on BBC this morning was given so much airtime - all a bit strange. I'm relieved to see a lower fatality number than I suspected, but feel so sorry for those affected.

SqidgeBum · 06/09/2020 12:16

I have also found it strange how it is being discussed. It's a bit hush hush or something, like there is no information about what happened, but there is information about what didnt happen. Odd.

TheQueef · 06/09/2020 12:21

To add I'm no conspiracy theorist and not jumping to conclusions it's odd.
Four or five sites between 0.30 and 2am (quiet roads, few pedestrians) is surprising for a lone wolf attack.

Time will tell.

Drunk arsehole gets into a fight that escalates and because he is an arsehole he has a knife.

TheQueef · 06/09/2020 12:23

And murders one and injures seven in four different lications?

Yes this. I'm in Brum & know this area well.

My initial thought was that it was an attack in the gay Quarter but having read more, it does sound like a gang running about being dickheads, not necessarily a terror attack.

The Arcadian is right next to the Gay Quarter but not really part of it. Lots of bars & restaurants. Looks like that's where the fighting started before spilling out onto the surrounding streets.

Either way, bloody awful & I'm very sad for my city this morning. Sad

I wonder if it is gang related if more than person has done the stabbing.

Lockheart · 06/09/2020 12:44

There's no point speculating. I have seen everything on twitter this morning from "It was the muslims" to gang violence.

It could be a coincidence of events, a fight which rapidly got out of hand, an orchestrated attack.

We will just need to wait and see. I imagine the emergency services have more important things to do in the immediate moment than assuage our nosiness.

easythatsfragile · 06/09/2020 12:45

The police are presumably releasing the information in this way so as to prevent people from making assumptions about why it happened, because they don't want anyone to start any 'revenge' attacks. Or it could be that are waiting for interviewees to trip themselves up.

thatsyourbusiness · 06/09/2020 12:49

Very sad morning here in the city Sad

I think the lack of decent coverage is due to lack of information, the attacker is still on the run and they don’t know who he is or why he did it.

Twitter is full of speculation from people who sound like they have never even stepped foot here. The impression some people in the U.K. and around the world have of Birmingham is mind boggling.

listsandbudgets · 06/09/2020 12:58

Devastating. I love my city and to wake up to news like this is horrifying.. and whoever it is is still out there somewhere presumably with their knife Sad

MorrisZapp · 06/09/2020 13:03

After the hotel stabbings in Glasgow I'd be happy now for news outlets to sit on these stories until they have meaningful facts to report. The whole thing was hyped up on rolling news and theories were thrown about with abandon. Most proved completely groundless.
