Asking for a handhold - DH in ICU

DH was taken into hospital last night with breathing difficulties. It was pretty minor, the paramedics weren't even going to take him in but we insisted. He's now in an induced coma on a ventilator. He's had 2 negative Covid tests so they don't think it's that but they don't know what it is.

I'm falling apart. He's my whole life. We have a 2 year old who is a complete Daddy's girl. I need him so much. I can't even be with him now because of COVID.

A great update OP💐

Offering another hand to hold.

My dad was on a ventilator in ICU for ten days a few years back - he was 84 and contracted meningococcal meningitis, but the ICU staff were just amazing and he recovered fully and lived until he was 95.

My best friend had heart failure in her late 40s after an infection damaged one of her valves. She needed a valve repair, which was a big op and a long slow recovery, but again, she's still alive and kicking several years later.

Hoping for more good news as the day goes on.

@elsiebear90 they haven't said as yet. He's had an ongoing issue with acid damaging his lungs so we don't know if that could he connected? But there is also history of heart problems in his family - his dad had a heart attack in his 60s and needed a triple bypass (he's now 87 and fit and well!). So I'm trying not to get my hopes up and work under the assumption that it will be progressive but if it can be managed in the longish term I'll be delighted. Thank you for reminding me that the stats are skewed - I was (stupidly) reading them all and panicking but of course a lot of those people will have less resources to draw on. He's 42 and otherwise fit and well - he was kayaking less than a week ago! - besides well controlled asthma and a little bit of extra weight.

So pleased that things are moving in the right direction. My DH was ill at one point, and I know that feeling of fear and dread only too well.

Sending lots of love your way.

So pleased with your update 🌹🌻

Even better news! He's off the ventilator and just on an oxygen mask. He's awake and talking, I talked with him for an hour. Very very tired obviously and a long way to go but better than we could possibly have hoped for at this point. They expect him to leave ICU in a few days and then they can start investigating what caused it but the cardiologist said that at this point there's no reason not to expect him to recover, if not all the way back to normal not far off. He'll be in hospital for a couple of weeks and recovering at home for 3-6 months. It's an absolute miracle. I'm so, so happy. Thank you all so much for your ongoing support, it has been such a lifeline.

I should have clarified that he will obviously need treatment and will probably be on medication for life. But honestly, I couldn't care less at this point. To get him back is more than I could have dreamed.

Awwwww wow - that's amazing news.

Long recovery is hard but it's a recovery. And from what you've been saying here he's got a good woman by his side - that always helps WinkGrin

Hardbackwriter · 05/09/2020 16:53

I am so happy to hear this. I will still be holding you all in my prayers, praying for as swift and as total a recovery as possible.

Now please sleep, as (completely understandably) you obviously didn't last night!
