HELP!! What have we done??? Pic attached

DH and I live in military housing and had the bright idea that painting our hallway would be a great idea!

There was some good logic behind it. We moved in when it was newly built in 2017 and the walls just had a matt white base coat on them. With two young kids, the walls have become, let’s just say, less white!

We bought some matt but wipeable sage green paint but it looks awful now it’s done. This pic doesn’t show the severity but it’s much darker than we hoped/expected. We have some things to put on the walls which might help but I’m really upset about it. I think it doesn’t help that every other wall in the house is plain white 😩

DH would definitely throttle me if I say I want to change the colour so that’s not an option.

Any ideas on how I can improve this?

I love sage green, and we painted our hallway that colour. Resene Spring Rain on one side and the two ends, and one shade darker on the other side. I was Shock when it was finished, as it was just too dark.

We ended up repainting the one-shade-darker wall one shade lighter instead, and it’s now perfect.

Sorry, but I wouldn’t be just living with it, if it wasn’t right. I mean I know it’s a bit of a faff, but not as bad as being annoyed every time you pass through it for years to come because it’s not right!

Love the pot and plant. Rose gold and sage green look lovely together

Of course it's an option!

Just buy some paint and tell him you'll do it if he's not onboard with doing it again.

ForestDad · 04/09/2020 00:32

It looks great, better than MODnolia.
Will soften in once you put your stuff back.
Don't worry about painting it again, you'll have to do it back to original colour before you move out, don't make more work for yourself!

WeAllHaveWings · 04/09/2020 00:33

Get the pictures etc up and live with it for a week, you'll feel different.

TheBeesKnee · 04/09/2020 00:35

It looks nice! Why is the military accomodation relevant? Do you have to paint it white before you move?

Charliecatpaws · 04/09/2020 00:38

It looks perfectly fine in my opinion, I like the colour......I will don my hard hat while people tell me what shit taste I have 🙈🤷🏼‍♀️🙈🤷🏼‍♀️

Bouncingbelle · 04/09/2020 00:48

DeborahAlisonphillipa · 04/09/2020 00:50

I think it’s a nice colour and it’s painted really well - but then you have brown carpet and black piano so there’s black, brown, sage and white all in the mix. But it’s not a disaster by any means. I might have been inclined to have half painted the hall - sage green to mid way point on wall then white to the ceiling then you get some colour without being overwhelmed. Not sure how easy that would be now though.

Floralnomad · 04/09/2020 00:52

I think it looks lovely .

Queenest · 04/09/2020 00:53

I think some pics with black frames, a nice runner and a larger doormat and it will all tie in well and look great. Just looks a little bare at the moment but would look great with something interesting hanging on the walls.

TitsOutForHarambe · 04/09/2020 00:56

I like it, but I do think a very light rug would brighten it all up

lovelemoncurd · 04/09/2020 00:59

I've got a green lounge and a green dining room. Nothing worse than living in a white box. Get some pics up, mirror etc. If you want to break it up paint one wall a lighter colour as a contrast.

littlecatfeet · 04/09/2020 01:06

@QuietThyme

Yes, I think the carpets a problem. Would a white runner type rug help?
I would honestly go for a turkish-style carpet with a lot of colour in it. Dark, but warm. Pictures/mirrors will help, and get a nice table lamp - that will soften things up!
LowLou · 04/09/2020 01:14

Having lived in quarters o know your pretty limited in what you can do.
I'd put a light runner down. A couple of mirrors and a lamp on the piano.
Maybe some other subtle lighting too. Fairy lights in a rose bowl/Lantern with electric candle in or similar.

Glass beads, glass or mirror lamp bases. You need things to reflect light.

Give it a while. If you still hate in 3 months admit defeat and make changes.

Is it you or your th or both that serve. Another trick I used in the past was to do a spot of deployment decorating when my OH was away. They still notice it, but it's done and dusted by the time they get home!

pguppgdown · 04/09/2020 01:21

i like it. I'd buy a runner for the floor: in a sage and white, pull it together.

www.runrug.com/hallway-carpet-runners-c37/arabesque-sage-green-hallway-carpet-runner-p7006

out of stock, and pricey for a runner, but the general idea...

Inkpaperstars · 04/09/2020 01:29

Most hallways are dark and it's not a bad idea to embrace that rather than fight it. I think painting the doors could be good, plus a runner and change of lighting.

I think it's fine, you just need to get used to it. It doesn't even look dark in the pic.

TorgosPizza · 04/09/2020 01:36

I think you'll get used to it. Paint always seems more dramatic when it's just done, especially if you're used to all white walls. It doesn't look dark in the photo.

I agree that putting a lamp or some fairy lights or LED candles on the piano or somewhere else in the hall could help. If the walls aren't too busy after you hang the frames, maybe hang more white or reflective items. Mirrors are fine, but you could also choose a mostly-white decorative sign/print or any wall art painted white.

Jux · 04/09/2020 01:41

I quite like it.

Put a few bookcases along the wall and you won't see it.

anorangeaday · 04/09/2020 02:26

I like it

cuparfull · 04/09/2020 02:26

Change the light fitting for a brighter one , have just recently bought one with 3 bulbs and fitted 3 x 820 lumen corn bulbs.. only 12watts each.
Crucially, the new fitting should hide the bulbs as they're not particularly pretty but give out spectacular light.
A long colourful hall runner, a huge mirror and a collection of pics.

eaglejulesk · 04/09/2020 02:32

I love it! Hate white/off white walls, and that looks much nicer. From experience it's always a shock when walls are first painted - you will get used to it.

FortunesFave · 04/09/2020 04:10

I'm another who can't see anything wrong with this...it looks like a generic hallway. There's nothing dark or "municipal' about it!

NameChange84 · 04/09/2020 04:18

I love it!
