DS is back to hating school. Lots of tears tonight. I think it's going to be a long term. He wet his undies a little in school today and refused to keep them on. Usually school would provide spares (we're told not to send spares after nursery) but now they don't so he came out in just his pants and no underwear. Not quite sure what to make of it...if he'd wet both would he have been left in them until I got there? It'd take me an hour to get from work to school. I feel like we've lost the plot a bit.

I'm finding mask wearing in work pretty ok considering. I think it's because we wear the blue environment destroying ones. I had my reusable one on in the shopping centre earlier and only made it half way round. I'd say about a quarter of the people in their hadn't bothered at all so I didn't feel too guilty.

Oh I’m jealous of everyone going to the gym! But glad you’re enjoying it and getting to do it. I go to the gym at work (I work at a university) and I’m going to have to suspend my membership because we don’t know when we’ll be allowed back to the office so it’s money pissed up the wall. They suspended all memberships at the start of lockdown but now the students are coming back (albeit to zero in-person teaching this semester) they’ve opened up again. God, I miss it.

Well well well How very fucking predictable.

Been speaking with a parent all morning and she tells me her daughter's school (
@steds_school
) is charging for face masks!?

Students already have their own masks but are now being asked to buy 'School uniform masks'

It's disgusting way to squeeze struggling parents for profit

Students will risk detention or being sent home if they dont purchase this.

Families have gone through so much over the last couple of months emotionally, mentally and financially only to be met with more distress as they're expected to pay or risk detention or being sent home

Why are these academies using the pandemic to make profit off of already struggling families?!

When the schools FINALLY opened we all thought we'd be hoofin the kids over the school fence with a bowl of Shreddies by the crack of Dawn
But in actual fact we're gutted - or not. And whilst sometime grateful for all the extra time and memories we've made - we wish it hadn't happened
But thanks for that Lockdown - we can find some silver linings but wish we didn't have to.
Thank you.
Not you Boris I’m still not your mate

Funny Grin
Ds2 back on Monday. I am trisha!
CruCru · 05/09/2020 00:37

I must admit that I feel quite anxious and panicky now, mainly because my children are going back on Monday. The school have done a great job and is not at all dementory. Not certain why I feel this way.

HeIenaDove · 05/09/2020 01:51

My new poem which ive just posted on another mask thread.

Mask bullies are back to have a pop
about those who cant wear them in a shop.
Saying we must all do our bit
But with the exempt they dont give a shit.
" Wear lanyards, badge or scarlet letters.
Dont forget to protect your "betters"
This is how they really want to play it.
They just aint got the guts to say it.
Sharp elbows is the name of the game
And their tool of the trade is shame.
Be it mask, snood scarf or visor
Mask bullies dont seem any wiser.
Some people cant wear them .......thats fine
But bullies keep on crossing the line.
With their comments and their stares
Thinking people are unawares.
This really really needs to stop.
And soon or more and more people wont shop!!

ISaySteadyOn · 05/09/2020 06:10

Love it, Helena Smile.

Pixel77 · 05/09/2020 07:56

Apparently, people aren't shopping. Much less anyway. Surprise surprise. Retail consortium (or some such) saying need to urge people to shop more.

Big shops are empty here although cafes (no masks) busy. Went onto Waitrose yesterday which felt very odd as deserted. They have put a blackboard outside with a happy message alone the lines of 'we hope you enjoy shopping here today' and seem to have got rid of the guards on the door. It's still dead though.

Small shops seem a bit better, but it was very noticeable as that Waitrose is town centre and usually very busy.

Evenstar · 05/09/2020 08:12

The lack of access to health care is a disgrace. A woman was asking advice about the health centre opening times on a community Facebook page yesterday. Her son had a shoulder injury, a week old, but deteriorating. She rang the GP surgery and was told to ring 111, she rang 111 and was told the GP needed to give them an appointment. At this point having taken hours to be dealt with by 111 she rang the surgery to find that nobody was answering the phone. The surgery had shut the phone lines for a lunch break, which she didn’t realise until asking on Facebook. I don’t know what the final outcome was, but effectively if you have Covid you won’t be seen and if you have anything else wrong with you, you might have Covid so you will be given the runaround and might eventually receive some kind of sub optimal care.

The latest is that we will be having to make appointments for A & E this winter via 111! I think the death rate from all this may well exceeed Covid deaths soon.

Littlebelina · 05/09/2020 08:18

I went shopping yesterday and it was reasonably busy in town given I was early (although that back fired as meant some shops hadn't opened due to new covud opening times). Found some shops (looking at you Next) have reduced ranges though, presumably to spread things out in stores and older boys clothes seem to be the main victim. Had to resort to Primark (which was as busy as usual but have fucked with their queue in a stupid way) for non skinny jeans for DS. Was pleasantly surprised how close to normal it was, apart from queues outside the banks, but popped into a local shop on way back to car and I was her first customer Sad of the day. I think small niche shops will suffer.

My experience of care in case of pregnancy loss was poor in pre covid times, lack of clarity over what to do, who I should see and felt like a bit of a nuisance until they diagnosed it was an ectopic after all and they'd better do something about it. It's definitely an area that needs more support/ general investment and can't imagine covid helped. I read the BBC article on it and it was shocking.

My strategy for any illness or injury this winter is just to go straight to a&e and refuse to leave until seen. If the NHS want to make GPs surgeries inaccessible that's their lookout. I'm willing to be a selfish prick about this; if my children need medical attention they are damn well going to get it. The only way that the GP surgeries will be forced into full operation again is if A&E is choked by non emergencies that should have been dealt with elsewhere. A couple of weeks of headlines of 12+ hour waits in a&e while GP's sit empty will spur the gov into ordering a full resumption of service, I reckon.

Did any of you see this? Very interesting.

Re shops and shopping. I get SO angry! Why has our (enormous) Tesco got the door and part of the car park chained off, so you have to walk round an awkward and long obstacle course to get in and out? The other day I was trying to negotiate some of these obstacles that they have places in the lobby area and was having trouble getting through. I just started swearing loudly like a mad woman- 'this fucking shop, why is all this crap here, it's all fucking mad, what a load of bollocks' etc etc. The 'mask guard' (aka security guard) just looked at me and said nothing - I don't think he dared, because he would have got a mouthful too. I am normally an extremely polite person who never usually swears in public!
Since the advent of masks I have never seen the shop quieter though, which suits me, but I reckon masks are having a bad effect on footfall.

ShoeJunkie · 05/09/2020 08:21

I had my first real life experience of nonsensical COVID roolz yesterday. Went to a restaurant and used the loo - ‘only one person in at a time’, whatever but ok. Got inside to find they had a ‘do not use‘ sign on the middle of the three basins. Why?! If there’s only one person allowed in at a time why does it matter which basin I use! I used the middle basin just to make a point

Pixel77 · 05/09/2020 08:23

Most shops don't do that anymore. It was a phase but then they changed so you can go out the same door. Strange they have kept it, I agree it's mad.

Times having sea change from the other day when they were very gloomy. Now it is all no more lockdown as mainly the young.

Bollss · 05/09/2020 08:24

Well I experienced a very intense "lockdown" yesterday.

The airlock at work malfunctioned and I got stuck in it. Couldn't leave the bloody building. 30 minutes I was trapped. Nobody wants that at home time on a Friday do they. Never been so pleased to get home!!

Littlebelina · 05/09/2020 08:25

Ours at work are like that shoejunkie, it's so they don't have to clean that one and instead clean the others more often

Pixel77 · 05/09/2020 08:29

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 05/09/2020 09:04

Just dropped DD off for a full activities day with Rainbows. It's camp skills based so outside, should have been at a campsite in the woods but they've not reopened so instead it's out the back of their normal meeting place in the car park. She doesn't care about that though! So good to see her just heading off to be with her friends as normal.

RaggieDolls · 05/09/2020 09:11

My DCs have absolutely loved being back at school this week. It's been a boost for the whole family.

Gutted about the venues that are making it hard for children's activities to return. The church hall where Brownies is held says regardless of what Girlguiding day they won't be opening until at least January. That means no Brownies, no village toddler group, no exercise classes.

RaggieDolls · 05/09/2020 09:13

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito that sounds amazing. My DD would love that.

Poor DS only started Beavers three weeks before they closed. He keeps asking when it will start again and I hope we hear something soon. Even if it's a 'no' I can at least give DS an answer.

Pixel77 · 05/09/2020 09:32

That's a shame about the village hall. Places like that are so important for the community.

As ad aside do you mainly feel the posters on MN are representative of the general population? I find quite a few well, have quite strong and unusual views. I hope most people aren't like that.

There was a post recently about a woman shouting at non mask wearers in a shop - it was AIBU but loads said this was OK and to be compassionate towards this person. (not to the ones she was shouting at)

Pixel77 · 05/09/2020 09:40

We were listening to radio 4 who had a phone in and there were some weird ones on there too mind you. I guess they select the extreme ones.

Hope you hear something. Rainbows is starting evening meetings up again next week, outside for now (they are putting gazebos in the car park) but hopefully moving indoors by the end of Sept. It's a real shame the outside space is so limited, just tarmac, but at least it's their own space rather than a school or community hall which I guess would be totally off limits right now. I'm wishing (in this very limited and specific way only!) to be back in the town I grew up in, as the guide hut there was amazing, with a big outdoor space with grass and trees. Perfect for the current situation! Ah well. DD doesn't know any better I guess. Next week will be great - Rainbows starts Monday, school starts Tuesday! And so far, no dementoring from anyone in charge at either.
