@LivinLaVidaLoki

Something else I find really odd at the moment, is the amount of people claiming that school cannot be safe as they and their kids have been living pretty much in isolation for 6 months now they are at school they are sick with colds. How are these people not understanding that this is not a reflection of how "safe" school is. Your child has not mixed with another soul for 6 months and been living in a house that is disinfected multiple times a day. Doesn't it make sense that this will weaken their immunity so when they return to school and mixing with people in different environments? I'm actually really concerned about the long term effects on our children's immunity.
Yes! My grandson has been back at school, as is his mum as she's a teacher there. She's picked up a cold, not covid tho, from the kids. He's not caught anything but to be fair, he's the healthiest kid I've ever known, never gets anything. To be fair they've been out every day walking the dog and he's the type of kid who's always climbing trees, digging in dirt, picking his nose etc, plus he's been in school for a few weeks over lockdown. My daughter was on maternity leave and left the house only for dog walking I believe, so her immunity is going to be lower. Say what you like about the scabby customers (and I do!) but perhaps mingling with them has helped me. (Still hate them tho)

Something which has occurred to me (and almost makes me want to get a job as a Covid Marshall so I can use it to point out the ridiculousness). Rule of 6 presumably doesn't apply in schools, right? Or on school buses? But when the kids are congregating at the bus stop, they would still need to follow it? Because we're certainly being told (by those on here) that they need to follow it if they want a birthday party!

Any Covid Marshalls looking for easy pickings... you know where to go.

It's rarely acknowledged but picking and eating is one of the best immunity builders there is.

They'll totally go for playgrounds too the weirdos

Although I'm still very sceptical. The Gov has made it clear that its up to Local Authorities to chose to have them AND to pay for them, and that they won't have any powers to issue fines. So the police would have to be called, and representative bodies like the Metropolitan Police Federation have made it clear that the police don't have the manpower to respond to every Covid Marshall call out.

AgentCooper · 12/09/2020 13:26

Oh they’d better not touch the playgrounds.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 12/09/2020 13:45

Sheffield, like some other cities already has 'City Ambassadors' that fulfil a similar role and also offer advice, directions, information etc. I am sure they will have 'Covid Awareness' added to their remit but they only operate within a small area in the city centre. Traffic wardens could also have it added as there is probably a bit less illegal parking going on if fewer people are travelling into the cities to work.

I can't see many places having the cash to take on new people to do the job. Although, some will choose to spend their money on that rather than children's/ old people's / etc services.

DP told me there is a report out that only 20% of people who test positive for Covid are then self isolating. Presumably because they have to work or they won't get paid.
But if you know you can't (or won't) isolate, why bother getting a test in the first place?

AgentCooper · 12/09/2020 14:31

Those of you on vit D - how long before you felt improvements? I’ve been on a recommended 6000 iu since the end of July (vit d3 with K2 spray) and tbh my tiredness, aches and mood aren’t much better. Maybe a wee bit? I’m guessing if I was low in the height of summer my levels must have been in the toilet in winter and there’s a fair bit of catching up to do.

HeIenaDove · 12/09/2020 15:01

@ISaySteadyOn Thanks re. the poem. I would have posted earlier but couldnt because i got suspended from here for a week after what happened on a mask thread.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 12/09/2020 15:29

Welcome back Helena! I hope you’ve learned your lesson and will no longer attempt to spread sense willy nilly.

Second day in a row with 2/400,000 cases here.

I’ve spent most of the day on the verge of tears. My life feels like it’s spiralling out of control and “friends” I thought intelligent are behaving in such a blinkered manner I feel very isolated.

Also my accountant has been in touch to do my books. Non-existent books.

Valium for dinner then. And a bogey apparently if they’re good for the immune system. 😁

HeIenaDove · 12/09/2020 15:39

Its 2 cases in 155,000 here.

Ooh good idea. I fancy seeing how long it would take me to get the sack for being a rubbish covid marshal.

I read something about this, but it sounded like a mix of not understanding the rules (e.g. going out for shopping rather than getting it delivered, but still not meeting up with people socially) and not being able to follow the rules (e.g. using separate bathrooms from family members, which obviously only works if you have more than one bathroom!) So I don't think many people were deliberately breaking rules.
110APiccadilly · 12/09/2020 15:54

This is the article I think I read, though it doesn't mention bathrooms so maybe I made that up, or got it from somewhere else. www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/11/less-than-20-of-people-in-england-self-isolate-fully-sage-says

I think it was probably around 3 months fully

BUT I took 20,000 iu a day for 4 months and then dropped it to 10,000 iu. I now take 4000 in summer and 8000 in winter. The spray is a good form, especially with the K2 included. It also helps to take it with a meal that includes a bit more oil. Because it is an oil based vitamin it helps it to be absorbed.

Unless you are overweight your dose should be enough. I am overweight and therefore need more. Vit D being fat soluble means, I guess, it doesn't all get where it is supposed to. Endocrine society says overweight people need up to 3 times as much.

I'm not advising you to take as much as me. Although it did take a full year before my levels were where I wanted them - but my GP did do a bit of a jaw drop when I told her how much. She agreed it hadn't increased my levels too much but suggested I took a bit less.

This is a good site to learn about Vit D (also links to reports and studies on Covid and Vitamin D

@RealityExistsInTheHumanMind Where do you buy your Vit D etc?

Taswama · 12/09/2020 17:13

Yes it was that article Piccadilly - it implies that it's the lack of sick pay / government support that is the main reason people aren't able to self isolate.

TheOrchidKiller · 12/09/2020 17:25

I actually think, that even on full pay, with all food provided, & unlimited access to netflix & a garden it would be boring, especially if you don't feel ill, & it's quite a big ask.

If you won't get adequate financial support, have difficulty getting a food delivery or don't have people near you to shop for you, (or find it hard to ask for help), don't have a garden, & if everyone else you live with is slowly driving you mad, it is a massive ask.

Let's face it, many people find 3 days with family over Christmas is more than enough. It would be like that but without the option of a Boxing Day walk.

I keep buying food to squirrel away just in case. I'm not panic-buying as such, & if you look in my cupboards you will not find dozens of toilet rolls, but I feel anxious about being trapped at home at any moment with no food. It's very unlike me. I wonder if it is the only thing I can feel marginally in control of?

Taswama · 12/09/2020 17:31

To be honest I'm not really criticising the people who don't self-isolate.
Christmas is a great comparison!
Just don't understand why get tested. We've pretty much decided not to test (even if any were available!) if we have symptoms. We would still avoid people, wfh etc but don't want to be breaking the law by going for a walk.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 12/09/2020 17:32

I’ve always kept the cupboards full. A legacy of harder times. Towards the end of the school holidays I’d literally run out of money and am now slowly stocking up again. I don’t ever want to be unable to feed the children. I live rurally in a snowy spot and we’ve been cut off before.

PickAChew · 12/09/2020 17:34

Something like 35 in 100,000 here.. I suspect we are on our way to the watch list like everywhere else around here.

110APiccadilly · 12/09/2020 17:34

DH wants to stockpile some food for winter. This whole thing has really shaken him - he can't believe governments would suddenly restrict our freedoms like this. (I am perhaps more naturally cynical because I'm less shocked.)

I'm not completely sure we need to stockpile but have agreed to it on the basis that it will help him not to worry. It's not like it will do any harm to have some extra tins in the cupboard. Trying to keep it to a reasonable amount though!

The thing is having already gone through one lockdown people's mental health is going to be really dodgy.
While I've managed to pull mine up in July and August it would take a tiny trigger for it to be back down there.
Including having to quarantine/ another lockdown.
