Am I weird or is this odd toileting behaviour?

Ok so this is a totally random one and sorry if I'm putting anyone off tea, but where better to ask than the hive mind of Mumsnet. I recently learned (through conversation, not through first hand observation Confused) that a friend wipes standing up. For both scenarios. I was gobsmacked, didn't know this was a thing!

Am I the odd one out in sitting down? I'm so confused, it feels like my life may have been a lie Shock who else has heard of this?

Who cares?

Sexnotgender · 02/09/2020 18:55

Why do you care?

Varenne · 02/09/2020 18:57

You're absolutely right, thank you Captain. While 100% of users care about 100% of other posts on MN, this is pure frivolity and a terrible waste of internet Hmm

Personal choice?

Mywifeandkids1 · 02/09/2020 18:58

I stand 😂

MiddleClassProblem · 02/09/2020 18:59

I stand. Previous mumsnet threads often come back 50/50 on this.

Not really that shocking...

SummerHouse · 02/09/2020 19:00

I care op.

Not actually sure what I do. Will just go check. I think I stand.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 02/09/2020 19:02

The word 'toileting' should be banned. It's not a verb.
People wipe as the see fit, presumably how they have found works best for them

positivelynegative · 02/09/2020 19:02

I discovered my husband stands - weird Grin It must squash any random poo between you cheeks. All kinds of wrong Shock

heartsonacake · 02/09/2020 19:02

It’s pretty much 50/50 on standing/wiping. I stand; it’s much easier.

Varenne · 02/09/2020 19:03

I only ask because I felt genuinely surprised to learn there was another way. Sort of like when I learned that some people, when doing the washing up, don't rinse the soap off. Similar feeling of confusion. Very much each to their own though, on both accounts.

I can't quite figure out the logistics of it though. Maybe I'm just not flexible enough!

Isn't it easier and more hygienic to stand wipe ? How do you get thorough access sitting down ?

HemlockStarglimmer · 02/09/2020 19:15

This cropped up on QI a while ago. They asked the audience for a show of hands.
Sandi commented that it was very likely that one group wasn't aware that the other group did it differently.

Jamhandprints · 02/09/2020 19:16

@RHRA I was thinking exactly the opposite. Sitting means the areas for wiping are open, if you stand, how do you get to the dirty bits?
I've never heard of standing to wipe OP, it's all kinds of crazy (drips down legs, squished poo...)

GameSetMatch · 02/09/2020 19:17

Well I didn’t know people wiped standing up, erm.. how? In my mind it’s impossible, your legs are together when you stand aren’t they? I’m very confused.

Happymum12345 · 02/09/2020 19:31

I had no idea that people stay sitting to do this!!!!

I was also shocked to learn there was more than one way (and that DH and I do it different ways Envy)

frumpety · 02/09/2020 19:58

As long as its front to back I don't really care how you all wipe. I am on the sitting side, simply because the toilet bowl is there to catch any residue, if you stand up do you straddle the toilet bowl to ensure nothing ends up outside or on the seat ?

frumpety · 02/09/2020 20:02

When I say sitting, this involves bending forward to gain appropriate access to the areas required so sort of mix between squatting and standing, squanding ? Grin

nosswith · 02/09/2020 20:03

It's weird to ask.

maddiemookins16mum · 02/09/2020 20:09

What is odd and weird is you even thinking of starting a thread on the subject.
Nobody discusses this in real life.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/09/2020 20:32

You do realise some people can’t reach whilst sitting.

RunningFromInsanity · 02/09/2020 20:42

I stand and never knew there was another option until I joined MN

WanderingMilly · 02/09/2020 20:43

I wipe standing up. All my family do, I taught my children to do it this way. I can't imagine trying to wipe while sitting down (how on earth do you...er...reach??) and I never realised anyone did this, so this has come as quite a revelation!!
How odd...…!
