Brother in 70's . Friend gave CPR . He must be gone ,don't you think ?
Anyone know if the airlifting might indicate that there was some thought that he might survive ?

I had CPR last year (for around 40 minutes, plus more in the hospital, I did flat line).

I hope your brother is OK.

ladymuck111 · 30/08/2020 14:29

I hope everything is ok and as others have said that 15 mins is not a great deal of time to be giving CPR and they wouldn't have airlifted him otherwise.

Inkpaperstars · 30/08/2020 14:31

Thinking of you OP, hoping for the best.

I had a friend who had a somewhat similar experience, he survived...initially he had issues with brain damage and severe memory loss but he has made a good recovery and is back at work.

Howallergic · 30/08/2020 14:31

I too apparently received CPR once by an ambulance crew. I have no recollection of it whatsoever and wasn't even told until I mentioned to my boyfriend that my chest was sore. He then told me what had happened. I don't know how long I had been awake before he told me - for me it feels like a day maybe - and it feels strange to me that it wasn't mentioned, but maybe he presumed that I would have some recollection of it. I apparently came around after a minute or so following CPR. Didn't have broken ribs or anything, don't recall having bruising/then again don't recall looking for bruising, but just felt sore in the chest area.

Chest compressions is basically physically pumping the blood from the heart around the body.

AED delivers an electric shock to the heart to restart it afair.
I really would need a refresher course.

MeridianB · 30/08/2020 14:34

@Janek

My understanding is that CPR keeps you going until medical help arrives, so 15 mins of CPR means that's how long it took for medical backup to arrive, not 'he had 15 mins of CPR to no avail'.
Exactly this.

I’ve been a first aider for 15 years and we are trained to keep going with CPR. I trained for my workplace but most incidents have been outside work.

For anyone who finds themselves having to do this in an emergency, it’s 30 compressions then two breathes - repeat. Call emergency services before you start if you’re alone or ask someone to do it for you. www.sja.org.uk/globalassets/first-aid-posters/adult_cpr_poster.pdf

OP, your brother’s friend gave him the best possible chance so I am sending positive thoughts and hoping all is well.

Dominicgoings · 30/08/2020 14:36

He is in the best hands now. Hoping for a really positive outcome Smile

Zzz1234 · 30/08/2020 14:37

Praying for your brother x

@peridito

Gazing thank you so much for posting .

No replies to my texts from two of my other brothers ,which makes my heart sink .

If they are at the hospital, they may have no signal or been told to switch their phones off or thought they had to.
SentientAndCognisant · 30/08/2020 14:40

Gosh what a worry, hope you get good news
Do check in on The friend make sure they debrief it will be deeply traumatic for them too
15minutes is not long in cpr terms. In cardiac arrest emergencies the heart doesn’t stop completely but the rhythm is irregular
CPR maintains blood flow to vital organs and buys times until transfer to hospital

perfumeistooexpensive · 30/08/2020 14:41

Definitely don't do an airlift unless they are alive and stable enough for the flight. The doctors in the hospital will be doing everything to see why he's had a cardiac arrest and fixing it. I hope you get an update very soon.

rorosemary · 30/08/2020 14:43

I really think that they should teach CPR and basic first aid at school (like what to do with choking/drowning et cetera). It would save so many lives.

I hope your brother will recover. As mentioned before, the CPR and quick help that he received could make all the difference. I hooe he'll be well. Big virtual hug while you wait.

MitziK · 30/08/2020 14:45

@MeridianB, the recommendations have changed in the light of Covid. It's compressions only, as they're the most important part.

I hope for the best outcome for the OP. Realistically, the chances aren't fantastic for anybody who needs CPR, because whatever led to it is disastrous, but his friend has done everything possible to give him a chance he wouldn't have had otherwise.

I think the TV depiction is unfair because it almost always results in them sitting up, coughing a bit and then are absolutely fine seconds later, which gives people an unreasonable expectation, including those who have performed CPR, as they feel like they've failed when they have actually succeeded just by doing it in the first place.

orangenasturtium · 30/08/2020 14:45

Flowers @peridito I hope all is well for your brother. Immediate CPR will have given your brother the best chances. As PPs have said, your brother will not have been moved until he was stable.

Shockingly, there is no national database of AED locations in the UK. The British Heart Foundation is trying to compile one called The Circuit. They need members of the public to help identify locations so 999 despatch can tell callers where to find one. If you have an AED in your workplace (you may not even know, so please ask), it would be hugely helpful if you check that it is registered (and maintained). They can be found in stations, public buildings, some shops (often in supermarkets), offices, GP surgeries etc.

In the event of an emergency, as well as performing CPR and dialling 999, you should also send someone to find an AED, if possible.
