Would this be two portions in your house?

If you look at the per portion calories each piece is about 95g. The NHS recommends a portion of fish is 140g in weight.

Would this pack feed two people in your house? DH and I are in disagreement.

I'd need lots of extras, otherwise single portion

Aswad · 29/08/2020 22:10

1.5 would be perfect amount for me but with less carbs and more veg

tillyandmilly · 29/08/2020 22:11

1 portion definitely - how this this be for two people?

@Kaiserin

I would feed myself, DH, and 2 primary school aged DCs with that, but with some starch (rice, potatoes or pasta) and lots of veggies on top. And probably a bit of seeds, nuts or pulses for extra proteins.
God, that's measly as anything.
Scbchl · 29/08/2020 22:11

Yeah 2 of us.

midsomermurderess · 29/08/2020 22:12

I'd like to know what the seeds, nut and pulses are that you'd add to this fish dish are too.

BayLeaves · 29/08/2020 22:15

I would eat that as a portion but my husband always complains that fish isn't very filling so he could probably eat about four times that portion.

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2020 22:16

I quite often do herby green lentils with white fish midsomermudress

BoomBoomsCousin · 29/08/2020 22:17

The photo isn’t detailed enough for me to see well, but the description says it costs 4.99 and that’s equivalent to 20.99/kg. So there must be a touch under 250g in the packet.

So if the weight of “a portion” of fish is 90-95g there must be more than two pieces of fish in there (about 2 and a half portions, in fact).

I think you may be reading the nutritional details wrong. Just because it says “A portion” contains x amount doesn’t mean that one of the pieces of fish in the packet is what it is considering to be “a portion”. I would guess, since fish slices probably aren’t always uniform weight they may not be able to print on the box what each piece of fish contains, so they use a standardised amount as their go to portion.

midsomermurderess · 29/08/2020 22:19

That sounds good, Bike, not sure where I see seeds and nuts coming in.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 29/08/2020 22:23

@Bwlch

If you can get hold of five loaves as well, it could feed 5000.

It's been done before.

£20.80 a kilo?

Strewth. Buy pollock instead.

Benjispruce2 · 29/08/2020 22:25

Yes one piece each.

Dowser · 29/08/2020 22:26

We must be fat greedy fuckers then
We’d have one each 😂

fuandylp · 29/08/2020 22:26

2 portions and if it's not enough for DH he can eat extra vegetables.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 29/08/2020 22:27

Cod is actually quite filling, I generally have a good appetite, but one piece with veggies, potatoes & either a sauce or some sort of crust would fill me up.

Benjispruce2 · 29/08/2020 22:28

Frozen fish is much cheaper.

bengalcat · 29/08/2020 22:32

Frozen fish is cheaper - a 6 portion pack of Waitrose coley for example costs less than a fresh two portion pack - the cats love it

RoseCider · 29/08/2020 22:32

Yes, but we don’t do Waitrose, we buy from the fishmonger at the port and portions are normally larger. I’d serve that with a lot of veg.

YankeeDad · 29/08/2020 22:34

Whether it's enough really depends on the individual. For me, a 120g portion of fish would leave me hungry within a couple of hours unless I ate a lot of rice or potatoes alongside the fish.

bengalcat · 29/08/2020 22:37

@RoseCider fishmonger sounds great sadly our local one closed this year - presumably Covid was the final nail in the coffin

yomellamoHelly · 29/08/2020 22:39

Yes. Though yesterday I stretched two fillets to feed 3.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 29/08/2020 22:41

Yes but I'd bulk it out with potatoes(probably new, with butter & chives ) & salad or veg. It's what I think of as an annoying size. 1.5 pack would probably be a better amount but 2 full packs would be too much.

FreekStar · 29/08/2020 22:42

That pack would give two very small portions by the look of it- you would need plenty of chips and peas with it!

NO WAY would it feed a family of four unless you didn't expect much or unless you were having lots of the things with it or adding it to a curry or something!

If they served you a portion of fish that size in the chippy you'd be mortified!

ViciousJackdaw · 29/08/2020 22:43

@Benjispruce2

Frozen fish is much cheaper.
Agreed. Iceland's frozen cod fillets are fantastic. 450g of sustainable cod for £4. Think it's three for a tenner. I know lots of people turn their nose up at Iceland, I used to myself but honestly, their frozen fish fillets are great.

WRT the Waitrose cod, it would feed two calorie counters/poor appetites or one person and a small child on its own. I'd probably use the amount in that pack to make two big fishcakes on home chipper night.
