Would this be two portions in your house?

If you look at the per portion calories each piece is about 95g. The NHS recommends a portion of fish is 140g in weight.

Would this pack feed two people in your house? DH and I are in disagreement.

I've just checked the actual pack and it says "90g as prepared".

Same for me re Ocado. I'll have to check the M&S equivalent.

Forgot to say, a good rule I use is that a persons fist size is representative of a rough portion size, especially for protein part of a meal. I have no idea if this is based in scientific fact, saw it on tv once. Does seem to keep us all feeling satiated though.

JoJoSM2 · 29/08/2020 21:51

I don't get why mumsnet is always so excited by protein! The daily need for men is 55.5g and woman 45.5g

Well, if you’re 5ft4 and do no excercise, then maybe. Not for optimum health for bigger and more active people.

The portions raw will average out as 120g each but the nutritional values given are as prepared so as water is lost during cooking they will weigh less than 100g afterwards.

White fish is low in calories, it’s very often included on low calorie meal plans and on its own with steamed veggies or salad it wouldn’t be enough for someone not deliberately trying to eat less calories. In a butter or cream sauce, or battered and fried, and/or with a decent portion of carbs alongside it’s a much more substantial meal with an adequate amount of calories.

Bloodybridget · 29/08/2020 21:52

Pre-packed fish fillets always look quite small to me, but when I eat them, usually seem enough. But we always have lots of veg too; if you were just eating it with a tablespoon of steamed spinach it would be meagre!

QuestionMarkNow · 29/08/2020 21:53

the actual weight of one piece of fish as about 90-95g.
If the weight of a piece of fish is 90g then I agree with your DH. It’s only one portion.

The issue here is what else he is eating during the day PROTEIN wise, not calorie wise.
If he is eating hardly an protein at all (bearing in mind that proteins can come in many forms, not just meat or fish) the. This is really too small.
If he is eating a decent amount at other meals, then 180g of fish would be ok.
It doesn’t matter if it’s for his main meal of the day or not.

SBTLove · 29/08/2020 21:53

I would feed myself, DH, and 2 primary school aged DCs with that
Came here to see this ^ 🤣
That would be really measly portions of fish.
I personally don’t know anyone who calculates calories and grammes per portion of fish.

Crawlbee · 29/08/2020 21:53

It depends for me what was with it, if it was bulked out with some sort of carb and plenty of veg then one piece would be filling, if though it was being eaten with minimal sides then it seems small.

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/08/2020 21:54

That would feed just me. Fish isn’t very filling for me.

ilovethesmellofthesea · 29/08/2020 21:54

I agree with you that it's 2 portions, but my DH would agree with your DH that it's not. If left to his own devices my DH would eat the whole packet but just with broccoli or other veg no potatoes to bulk it up. The accompaniments are the decider here! But also I'm constantly surprised with the sheer amount men eat.

PickAChew · 29/08/2020 21:55

The M&S fresh fish is usually very good. Very occasionally, too occasionally, they do hake. So much nicer than cod.

QuestionMarkNow · 29/08/2020 21:55

That’s wrong. The amount of protein you eat is linked to your weight. The values you are giving might be right for the average person but won’t be for someone who is overweight (or underweight).
Plus of course, if you exercise a lot, you will need more protein too etc....

QuestionMarkNow · 29/08/2020 21:57

I personally don’t know anyone who calculates calories and grammes per portion of fish.

I’m not counting calories but, at some point, I’ve counted proteins because it was clear we were eating way too much meat.
Doing that allowed us to eat in a more reasonable way.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 29/08/2020 21:57

@TigerDroveAgain

Don’t be ridiculous. This is MN. That’s plenty for 4 plus leftovers

In the real world: that feeds 2. It would be a lot for one but not so much that you COULDN’T eat it

Lol!!
QuestionMarkNow · 29/08/2020 21:58

(I’ve also learnt that later on, having put on a lot of weight, I actually wasn’t eating enough protein either, which had a knock on effect on my blood sugar levels)

greengreengrass14 · 29/08/2020 21:59

not sure what the portion thing is about unless someone has a serious health issue and is dieting urgently.

Personally I would make a fish pie, along the lines of what you have got in the fridge with delicious topping, mash, salt and pepper cheese on top.

that way no one knows or gives a toss about portions. Either they eat it or not. Chances are it is so delicious it disappears.

Hungry people argue.

Tired people argue.

People who are fed with something delicious like this. Less so.

yevans · 29/08/2020 21:59

Yes but we would bulk it out with plenty of potatoes and veg etc. DH cycles miles to work every day so needs decent portion sizes.

Tootsie321 · 29/08/2020 22:01

1 piece of fish would be fine for me, but if feeding ds and dh, they would need 2 pieces each. They are tiny portions and the cost of over £20 per kilo is very steep, maybe why I don’t buy fresh fish as often as I would like to!

TorgosPizza · 29/08/2020 22:02

To make it a satisfying meal for two, I'd want good-sized portions of carbs to go with it. Some type of potato dish, probably, and vegetables. But yes, it could be enough for two people.

minnieok · 29/08/2020 22:03

I would normally buy 300g for 2 people. Lidl sell 150g portions

JellyfishandShells · 29/08/2020 22:04

Yes- that would be fine for two of us, but it would be served with vegetables so plenty. We love fish and both keep making the mistake of buying too much - my DH more than me - and then when we get it home wonder what we were thinking. Odd really, as we don’t do that with meat.

Nandocushion · 29/08/2020 22:05

That would be closer to a single portion in our house Blush

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/08/2020 22:06

It would really depend on what you you were serving it with etc.

There is what. about 120 calories in it? Even on a weight loss diet you'd need a fair bit with that to make it into a meal.

If it was with a decent portion of carbs or maybe with another portion of protein e.g. with prawns or chorizo and pasta or something then it would do two, otherwise with a salad or some roasted veg then it would be for 1.

jessstan2 · 29/08/2020 22:08

I think one and a half packets, ie three portions, would be about right for two people.

AnnaFour · 29/08/2020 22:08

Well it might be one portion but you’re obviously not only having that on the plate. So surely you calculate your portions overall, Including whatever you have it with? I don’t get why anyone would be arsey about the size of the fish it seems fine to me and you’ll have other things with it.
