Was thinking about this today.

Some just grate.

My most memorable and favourite is the late Michael Winner when he did the Littlejohn show. (Showing my age). I thought he'd come out and be just as vile.

For anyone who missed it, here's the link

What's yours?

I used to like James Corden, then he disappeared up his arse around the time he had that 'to-do' on stage with Sir Patrick Stewart at an awards show. But he seems to have turned it around again and is living his best life.

@AllTheWhoresOfMalta- agree about Ken Clarke.

yolio · 30/08/2020 23:36

Will never understand this thing about so called Celebrities. They have to shit on the toilet like the rest of us. Get a life folks.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 30/08/2020 23:37

Prince Charles, he seemed very loving and welcoming towards Meghan.

Robin Williams, couldn't really stand his comic persona but feel very sorry now that he was battling all those demons.

Eastie77 · 30/08/2020 23:48

I've never had an opinion of Kate Garraway but a friend of mine worked for her and her husband in a specific capacity a few years ago and she broke down in tears when she told me how they treated her. It sounded absolutely horrific.

YY to Michael Portillo. I would never vote Tory but have grown to like him. There was a little weirdness when he did that late night show with Diane Abbot though. I have a lot of respect for Ken Clarke too. An old acquaintance from Uni worked in Parliament and said he was really lovely, much nicer than the Labour MP she worked for!

TableFlowerss · 30/08/2020 23:53

Ronaldo

I thought he seemed like an arrogant up his own arse type

But the things he’s done for charity and good causes etc has changed my mind. Loves his family and kids to bits from what I can make of it.

My opinion has definitely changed

singersarp · 30/08/2020 23:55

Prince Charles. He was obviously awful to Diana but I think he's grown as a person and done his best to support his sons. He clearly did his best to make Meghan feel welcome and stepped in when her own father turned into a complete and utter twunt. He seems very happy and settled with Camilla.

TableFlowerss · 31/08/2020 00:00

@showmethegin

Christiano Ronaldo. Always thought he was an arrogant, slimy bloke but have since learnt how much he does for charity and there was a lovely video of him making the team bus stop so he could run off it to greet a young fan who was desperate to meet him. He had a hard childhood too.
I could have written this. I too like Ronaldo now
Graphista · 31/08/2020 00:20

@ohdearmymistake what the HELL have frank Bruno’s mental health issues got to do with the appalling way he behaved in that situation? I also saw that show and he behaved dreadfully, thinking himself more important than pretty much anyone!

Another who hated Michael portillo but warmed to him SLIGHTLY upon seeing him on various shows after his political career. Turns out he’s not quite the massive twat I thought - though I still disagree with his politics

@Gulsink I like Russell brand I think he makes a lot of sense on drug rehab and certainly other areas of politics

Sophie Ellis-bextor - wasn’t a dislike as such just wasn’t my cuppa, then she was the support act at a concert and the fans were giving her a hard time, it was a roasting hot day, there were technical issues and she turned it all around! Made some very funny self deprecating comments, then did a stonking show and won over loads of people. There were youngsters waiting for her to get autographs etc even though they’d not been in at the concert and she made loads of effort with them too.

I used to live and work in a place where a LOT of celebs live, most were quiet and unassuming, a few were “don’t you know who I am?” Type arseholes.

My mums a huge Beatles fan and most people were of course more “familiar” with John and Paul, George and ringo were less celebrated, I had the clearly mistaken impression ringo considered himself “overlooked” and I judged him for that, he was a regular customer and was always so polite, patient, happily signed autographs and posed for pictures and did a ton of stuff for local charities and did hospital/hospice visits etc could not have met a nicer man!

Was never that fussed about Jk Rowling. She’s my hero now.

I’m not a Harry Potter fan, I’ve never read any of her books but I think the stuff she’s doing now with feminism etc is AMAZING. Love her.

sorryforswearing · 31/08/2020 00:27

Changed my mind about Ricky Gervais after finding out about his love of animals and his dislike of hunting.

Chris Evans I disliked when he was doing his drinking binges and not turning up for work. Began to really like him when he did Radio 1 breakfast show. Don’t listen to Virgin radio though.

Still waiting for Naomi Campbell to redeem herself.

Pieceofpurplesky · 31/08/2020 00:34

Yes to Rylan. He's just so lovely.
Also Alison Hammond who was so annoying on CBB but is just fabulous

Furtwangler · 31/08/2020 00:57

Charlotte Church. I hated her as a little kid, or the gooey public image. Then heard her interviewed on radio at about 15 and she was a really straightforward, unaffected, nice kid. Allowed myself to believe some of the tabloid coverage of her when she was in her 20s being a bit more wild child than her previous image, but I unexpectedly loved her on her TV show and when she later spoke out against phone hacking & reporters disguising themselves as doctors to spy on her mum in hospital, I thought she spoke so well, especially when she said of the newspapers' apology, they're not sorry, they're just sorry they got caught. She's one of those people the press loves to drag down, but she's a survivor and a smart, successful woman. She doesn't pretend to be perfect, but she's got her head screwed on right.

I've read his autobiography. He openly admits that he was a complete twat for a while. Which I appreciate.

Re Ronaldo. My DH has always said what a decent bloke he is, and how refreshing it is to see.

I remember Alison Hammond from her original BB show and I loved her on that. She was brilliant. I didn't watch the CBB version, and have only caught bits of her current job over the years, but she seems just the same and I'm pleased she's doing well.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 31/08/2020 12:21

Jessica Simpson then podcast Your Wrong About did a deep dive on her autobiography. It’s really interesting how she was judged on how she was marketed (by men) and then in the Newlyards as an airhead. She comes across as very perceptive and generous. Meanwhile Justin Timberlake does not come out well, after kissing her the first thing he does is ring Ryan Renalds because they had a dare in The Mickey Mouse club to see who would kiss her first, by then he was in his mid twenties, the twat!

I do now like Ken Clarke, Michael Portillo (the train program is brilliant!) and John Major. If you’d told me that in the 90’s I’d have been appalled!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 31/08/2020 12:21

And Giles Bradriff!

DumDaDumDum · 31/08/2020 12:39

Ashley Cole...

Gets terrible press. But I’ve met him twice and a family member has too. Every time has been quiet, lovely and polite. Does loads for charities too.

VaggieMight · 31/08/2020 13:43

Camilla Duchess of Cornwall. I'm embarrassed by how much I despised her in years after Princess Diana died.

EggyPegg · 31/08/2020 14:08

@VaggieMight

Camilla Duchess of Cornwall. I'm embarrassed by how much I despised her in years after Princess Diana died.
I couldn't agree more with this. She was so vilified in the media. And them continuing affairs after they were both married wasn't right. But both Charles and Diana should never have been put in that position in the first place. Charles and Camilla are deeply in love, and have been for many years, that much is clear. It's tragic that a young woman deemed more 'suitable' was forced between them with no consideration of the impact it would have on all their lives. They all deserved so much more happiness than that. Diana was beginning to find that happiness, as she was still so young, and I'm pleased that C & C have been permitted to be happy too.
showmethegin · 31/08/2020 18:26

I met Camilla at a function and she was absolutely lovely. Very friendly and warm.

HollowTalk · 31/08/2020 23:11

She might be lovely, but she was having an affair with a married man while she was married herself. Now her husband and her lover might have been happy with the situation, but her lover's wife was destroyed by it.

KitchenRollHuggers · 31/08/2020 23:14

Rylan 100%

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 01/09/2020 09:25

‘It's tragic that a young woman deemed more 'suitable' was forced between them with no consideration of the impact it would have on all their lives’

Is that really what happened? I thought Charles dithered about marrying Camilla as he was told she wasn’t quite suitable enough so she got fed up and married someone else long before Diana arrived on the scene.

amusedbush · 01/09/2020 11:41

Another vote for Ricky Gervais. I thought he was a twat until I saw Extras years ago - there are parts of that show that still make me laugh out loud when I see them again.

I agree with a lot of his views, and then Afterlife sealed the deal for me. I think he's fab.

GisAFag · 01/09/2020 17:19

I don't get Ricky Gervais, that grin, over the top laugh on An Idiot Abroad.. I love Karl.
