Was thinking about this today.

Some just grate.

My most memorable and favourite is the late Michael Winner when he did the Littlejohn show. (Showing my age). I thought he'd come out and be just as vile.

For anyone who missed it, here's the link

What's yours?

Elderflower, Keith Floyd was a legend! I can't be the only one wondering how he came to be staying at your house for a weekend????!!! Can you tell us any more?

coffeeandbiscuittime · 26/08/2020 22:53

Hated Chris Evans in the nineties
Liked him on Radio 2
Think he is a sanctimonious git on virgin, if I wanted to be preached at I would go to church.

Thierryhenryneedisaymore · 26/08/2020 22:55

Helen Wood.

Elderflower14 · 26/08/2020 23:00

@Thierryhenryneedisaymore
He was dating someone we knew... My Mum ran a B&B and he came to stay... This was when he was huge early 1990s just before he was in Desert Island Discs.... We as a family had to keep it quiet for ages... I had to make up a fictitious reason to have the weekend off from my job in a hotel!

DarkDarkNight · 26/08/2020 23:00

Taylor Swift. I didn’t really dislike her, but her music wasn’t for me and I thought the strategy of trying to control the media coverage of her either by her or her team was over the top.

But I am actually obsessed with her music. Folklore is a brilliant album, just glorious, in fact I’ve loved everything since Red more and more.

Thierryhenryneedisaymore · 26/08/2020 23:06

Wow Elderflower, did he drink all the wine?😂😂

ohdearmymistake · 26/08/2020 23:14

I remember seeing Michael Winner on a program where celebs went to stay with a family for the weekend, the family didn't know who would be arriving. He turned out to be lovely, very polite and funny.

Frank Bruno on the other hand had the wife in tears in no time she couldn't wait for him to leave, he was awful. A long time later his MH issues came to light.

I usually find myself warming to people I previously disliked, when they appear on 'Desert Island Discs'. Judy 'People are always surprised that I carry my own bags' Murray managed to buck that trend and then some. Jesus.

I was dimly aware of Rylan and disliked what little I knew of him, but I really rather like him now. Not half bad as a tv presenter and seems like a decent bloke.

I despised Michael Portillo but I also quite like the railway thing - and loads of people who've met him say he's lovely.

Shaun 'Barry from EastEnders' Williamson used to annoy the piss out of me. Then he came into a restaurant in which I was working and he's hands down the nicest celebrity you could meet. Was absolutely charming to the staff, and unendingly patient with the stream of people (mostly kids) who wanted his autograph - and spent absolutely ages with a boy in a wheelchair who asked if he could have a photo with him. Didn't even really get to eat his food. He's extremely witty and really really intelligent, too.

Golfer John Daly has a reputation for all sorts of bad behaviour, and I hated him when he won The Open in '95 (I was rooting for Rocca). But I was at the Open at Sandwich in 2003 and while tons and tons of very famous and ostensibly 'nicer' players walked tetchily past all the kids asking for autographs, he signed them all, chatted, and gave a couple of kids things like his gloves and visor. A gent.

I used to really find Mark Labbett obnoxious. There was a big national quiz show on sometime in the mid-2000s where members of the public would go through a long knock-out process to crown the eventual winner. It came down to him and a 16yo girl, who was absolutely amazing for her age, but his OTT triumphalistic 'in your face'-style reaction when he defeated this child was disgusting.

Now, he still banters with the contestants on The Chase, but he's completely gracious whether in victory or defeat. He's still not my favourite Chaser (it's a tie between Anne and Shaun), but I like him and respect his abilities far more now.

To be fair, he was still an unknown member of the public when he was on that show, and I believe he might have ASD (as does Anne), so they were quite likely mitigating factors.

gingerbread88 · 26/08/2020 23:20

Rylan, love his radio 2 show (and his Mum!)

FOKKYFC · 26/08/2020 23:21

I've always thought Keith Floyd was great. I get a bit teary when I see his segments on Saturday Kitchen' or whatever it is.

Flubber88 · 26/08/2020 23:22

@Standrewsschool yes I was also going to say Rylan. X factor etc WTF?.....now Radio 2 love his show :)

I'm a big fan of his, too. I'm not interested in Eastenders in the least, but I've seen him on a lot of quiz programmes. As you say, he is hugely intelligent and outstanding with his general knowledge, but he's so unassuming and genuinely humble with it. I heard they were seriously considering him as the fifth Chaser, but they wanted another woman to even things up a bit more (not that Jenny isn't great too).

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/08/2020 23:24

Apologies for the doubled-up quote there.

Sakura7 · 26/08/2020 23:24

Ryan Reynolds. When he started out I had a really irrational hatred for him. Now I think he's hilarious and he seems like a lovely guy.

Agree about Rylan too.

FOKKYFC · 26/08/2020 23:25

I think he would have made a great Chaser. His GK is spot on.

LadyCatStark · 26/08/2020 23:28

Guy Martin

Costacoffeeplease · 26/08/2020 23:31

I know someone who worked for Michael Portillo when he was still an MP, and although they weren’t particularly thrilled about it, really liked him once they met. He kept in touch for quite a while too

I couldn’t stand Michael Ball when he was younger but I’ve grown to like him now. He seems to have calmed down a bit

Lolalovesroses · 26/08/2020 23:31

Jeff Brazier, when he first came on the scene and was dating Jade Goody, I thought he was a fame hungry, loud mouth, lout. I was wrong. He seems to have devoted himself to his children, tried to maintain links with Jade's mother ( for the Children's sake) and I've only heard him speak well of Jade. He never exploited his children in the media ( unlike Peter Andrea) to make money. Jade chose a great father for her children.

GisAFag · 26/08/2020 23:32

Did like Peter Andre until.. Before he met Emily but after Katie he was asked about his ideal woman, he replied she'd have not have kids., wtf he had kids with Katie by then.. How bloody rude. Put me right off

AgentCooper · 26/08/2020 23:33

Yes to Portillo. I could never stand him and hated everything he represented but I love his railway programmes. They’re so interesting and he always comes across as so engaged with and interested in the world and people.

Pobblebonk · 26/08/2020 23:33

Lionel Blair. I thought he was a bit of a pratt, then (ages ago) I saw him at the Jersey Battle of the Flowers. He really worked his socks off in blazing heat entertaining a huge audience over the course of a few hours. He's still not really my cup of tea, but I had major respect for his professionalism that day and it stuck with me.

TheQueef · 26/08/2020 23:34

Tyson Fury.
I watched the series so I could slate him and fell completely in love Blush

alexdgr8 · 26/08/2020 23:35

actress Jane Asher is a genuinely kind decent person.
does a lot for medical-related charities.

MaliceOrgan · 26/08/2020 23:44

Hugh Grant - just thought he was vain and sleazy but really respect him on all the hacking stuff. Also, he was ace in Paddington. Charlotte Church did some good stuff on the hacking stuff but I always liked her.

Marcus Rashford (for playing for such a horrible team) has recently impressed on the school lunch voucher turnaround too
