Anyone seen the new self checkouts at Asda?

Went to Asda today, used the self checkout. Glanced up at the screen and saw my ugly mug staring back at me! Wth is that about? They have cameras on the checkouts now?!

I think they’ve had this for a while-I remember a few years back having a bit of a strop and noticing what appeared to be my own mum’s angry face on the monitor...

BitchTitties · 26/08/2020 21:07
Grin Definitely a new thing in my local Asda. I wonder what the purpose is?

WheresMyMilk · 26/08/2020 21:09

I wouldn’t be too thrilled about that! Presumably as a security feature of some kind?

MsWonderful · 26/08/2020 21:11

It’s to make you realise that they can see you so you don’t try to outsmart the scanner I think.

hastingsmua1 · 26/08/2020 21:11

They’ve been around for years as a theft deterrent, at all supermarkets. They were just implemented at high loss branches first before tricking down to all branches.

It’s strange because I actually look nice in self checkout cameras?? As in better than I actually do? I’m one of those weirdos who has taken selfies in themBlush

YummyMummyJill · 26/08/2020 21:16

Wow I CANNOT BELIEVE asda on this on! i personaly find this outrageous and a breach of my privacy. i hope asda sorts it out, 4 now i will be returning to waitrose

hastingsmua1 · 26/08/2020 21:17

The thing is, shops have normal cctv cameras all over the tills anyway, so even without these particular facial cameras thefts are still recorded.

However for opportunistic thieves, just seeing their own image may put them off doing anything dodgy, it works well as a deterrent. In some stores, these cameras aren’t even set to record! They essentially just function as a mirror at some places, they’re effective enough as a visual deterrent alone

Elderflower14 · 26/08/2020 21:22

There was a thread recently from a woman who stole from self service tills. This might make her and others think twice...!

FelicityPike · 26/08/2020 21:22

Well if you read the thread about thieving from the self service checkouts...that might explain why!

Elderflower14 · 26/08/2020 21:23

@FelicityPike Cross Post!!

BarbaraofSeville · 26/08/2020 21:28

They've had them at our Asda for at least 2-3 years. I think it's a response to huge increase in sales of potatoes, carrots, bananas and onions and a corresponding drop in fancy vine tomatoes and cherries.

Cecilia2016 · 26/08/2020 21:30

OP this happened to me last year in my local Asda ! I was busy scanning items and didn’t even realise that a big screen camera was there!

hastingsmua1 · 26/08/2020 21:34

I think, if anything, it’s an excuse for staff to monitor self service tills less frequently

With these cameras, if there’s no one manning the self service till or staff are attending to someone else, people still know that they’re being watched. Staff can work elsewhere instead of having to monitor individual transactions. With the added bonus of shrinkage still being reduced.

Spooky!

chocdonuty · 26/08/2020 21:42

Sainsburys by me just had them put in, like OP it scared me for a min when I looked up as I wasn't expecting to see myself after a 10 hour shift looking right back at me Confused

BitchTitties · 26/08/2020 21:44

I mean, I’m certainly not a thief... but I felt abit put out seeing my face staring back at me. Not quite sure why Grin

mcdog · 26/08/2020 21:46

Ohhhh...can someone link to the thieving thread please????

Fatted · 26/08/2020 21:48

Our Asda has had them for at least the last 12 months.

@YummyMummyJill I hope you're being sarcastic. Because if you're not, I hate to break it to you about Waitrose and their CCTV Grin

Rockbird · 26/08/2020 21:48

I saw my big fat ugly face on a screen a couple of weeks ago, can't remember whether it was Asda or Sainsbury's. Put me off my shopping, I was so appalled by my appearance. No idea how long it had been there, I don't tend to look up when I'm scanning.

allfalldown47 · 26/08/2020 21:50

@YummyMummyJill I hope you're joking?
If not what on earth are you going on about? Presumably you realise that there are cctv cameras literally everywhere you go?!

x2boys · 26/08/2020 21:53

,I see my Dad's face when I look in the mirror @MrsWooster ,I'm female 😵I haven't noticed the camera ,but I think it's a misrepresentation when they call it the fast aisle 🙄

Gingerkittykat · 26/08/2020 21:53

@YummyMummyJill

Wow I CANNOT BELIEVE asda on this on! i personaly find this outrageous and a breach of my privacy. i hope asda sorts it out, 4 now i will be returning to waitrose
I'm sure Waitrose have their own CCTV and security cameras, just because you can't see your face doesn't mean they don't exist.
YummyMummyJill · 26/08/2020 22:12

well at LEAST waitrose doesnt show me my own face, horrible and rude

Browzingss · 26/08/2020 22:14

Funnily enough I reckon Waitrose has more cameras than Asda, especially as they have their quick check system. They need eyes on customers at all times, as opposed to just focusing on the till. Same with the Apple store.

Lots of companies with seemingly no anti theft protocol more than make up for it with an abundance of covert cameras. It’s good customer service (or a sign of a high end/luxury store) to not outright suspect customers of theft (as these selfie cameras may insinuate)

CarolVordermansArse · 26/08/2020 22:24

Make sure your mask covers your face well and wear dark glasses and a hat.
